Taking a small break from Chaos stuff to get this guy going. Been seeing a lot of great examples lately and I just got myself an apocalypse set of 3 carnifexes. One will be this fella, the other 2 will be regular fexes.

The other day I started putting the body together. Tonight I used the top of a heavy duty coat hanger (that thing was real tough to bend, wasn't the wimpy kind of hanger) and twisted it into the shape for the snakey tail. I cut the fex tail in half, and will attach it to the body backwards, like with the underbelly part where the back would be, as you can see in the pics. I noticed this gave it a nice "C" shaped curve to the body.

Every night or so I will be doing a lot of green stuff sculpting adding new plates along the back and down the tail. Just a little at a time, I don't want to rush and end up with fingerprints all over it Right now I just wanted to get the basic form together. I had some extra lictor talons from an old conversion I never ended up doing. I don't even remember what it was, I think maybe I was trying to make warrior-lictor models. So, I used those for the 3rd row of tallons. I plan to have at least 2 - 3 other sets of talons past that, smaller ones. I have a bunch of them left over from genestealers.

Anyway here's some starter pics, with bitz stuck on with blue stuff just to show how the pose will be in the end.

MM, I do not really like the rear claws (from the metal lictor..) I would think that the smaller sized scything talons would look better (I think there are 4 sizes of scything talons, mc/size, warriorsize, stealersize and hormisize)

Maybe the metal lictor with the normal scytes would work too, but the ones used has to many bony protrusions IMHO.

Still love where this is going though and will be following

The lictor arms seem like a nice step down but they don't flow at all. I think it's mostly because of how you flipped the "facing" of the arms. I think if you reverse the arms and removed the inside spikes from the blade part of the arm to make it more uniform with the TMC Scytals it would look a bit better.

It's nice that you've started it with blu-tac so that you can try a few configurations before settling on something. Try reversing em and post up another pic?

I wasn't too sold on the lictor talons but I wanted to try and use them somewhere But I also wanted the talons to match the others, like with the shells/plates on top of the blade parts. Since I have 2 other fexes I thought about using a 3rd set and trimming it down a bit... but, I don't really wanna do that either because I might want to have 2 sets of talons for the other fexes.

The only other kinds of tallons in my bitz box right now are genestealer talons and I have 1 set of the older style talons from the monsterous creature sprue, but those are the plain style. Maybe i can greenstuff some armor plates on them to try and get em to match the others

Another fex2try wip! Lovely.

I like that youve placed the lictor talons pointing the other way than the top two pairs of talons. Looks cool.

And the pose is sweet. Its got the "Im diving down on you to devour you!" going, but still not too much leaning forward so you can still see the face. Many pics of Fexes have them hunching forward so much that all the lovely details on the front and chest is totally hidden.

This looks promising!

This seems to be a common conversion going around. Is there anything that plastic kit can't do?

Been a week or so, made a lot of progress. I'm basically just mixing up a good sized chunk of greenstuff then sculpting on 4 or 5 armor plates, then leaving it till the next day so it hardens.. then the next day I trim it with a xacto to get the right shape and the straight lines, and do a little filing and sanding to make it smooth.

I'm going to change the tail and pop off that scythe tail bit and just sculpt some plates going around the 3 little horns/talons instead. I think I'm pretty much done with sculpting around the rest of the body. I be working on this still come thanksgiving if I don't stop. So I'm going to just have what's there taper off a bit. Also for the 3rd talon on the body I'm going to use the old fashoned monsterous creature sprue talons since they're a little smaller and I'll just sculpt a few little plates on them to match the new fex ones.

here's some updated pics

I love where this is going, I just have one comment/criticism. I don't have the Carnifex kit (I really want one, but I can't justify buying one just for display purposes yet ), have you used the hips & tail from the Carnifex blended into the putty? It's just that the armour plates don't seem to flow properly between the plastic and putty, not sure if that's still WIP.

Feel free to ignore me, after all I wouldn't be able to do anything near this awesome, I can't wait to see more!

Yeah that's pretty much what I did. It's still WIP. I'm mostly done with the tail though. I'll be adding some spikey bitz along the side of the tail. For the body though, I'm going to add 1 more shell row on the bottom of the back, so it will cover up that spot where the joint doesn't look right.

I'm also considering attaching the top and bottom with magnets instead of glue, so I can take him apart easily and make it easier to transport.

OK I have him all put together now. Pretty much ready to be painted

Not sure what I want to do with the base.. I was going to make it CD sized, but I stuck him on the regular large round base and I kinda like it with the tip of the tail hanging off like that...

Overall, it looks sweet.

However, I'd suggest re-doing the underside plates on either the tail, or the plastic hip girdle so they match each other, since right now they don't flow together.

Vis-a-vi the base, it is a Gargantuan Creature, so the standard 60mm base does seem a weeee bit small to be honest, and besides, a larger base gives you more space to decorate.

Yeah I'm gonna do a bigger base. I'll hit the craft store this weekend and see what they have. The usually have all kinds of round wooden things for making plaques and stuff like that.

For the tail... I dunno, I guess ADD set in and I just kinda got sick of sculpting plates :( I may add a couple more just to taper it off a bit. I had planned to add an extra plate to the bottom of the back to cover the joint, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the pieces to fit right, but I might just extend that last shell piece on his back a little bit more.

I'm also considering doing a Malanthrope conversion kind of the same way, just with the tail going straight up. A friend just told me he has a malanthrope head and arms from FW that got a little warped so FW sent him new pieces, but it's nothing a little greenstuff can't fix

Working on the base now. First I went to AC Moore looking for some good wooden things but they didn't really have anything I liked that was the right size, and I didn't want to use a heavy wooden plaque thingy. So I took an old movement tray, and that's gonna be his base now

I mixed up a whole bunch of resin bitz from the 40k basing kit and I'll add some rocks too. gonna use spackle to fill the gaps so it looks level in the end
