Does close combat end if at the end of the fight no one is in base contact?

Last night we had a multicombat with 5 units in the battle. My friend had 3 man space marine unit, a librarian and a 7 man vetran unit, I had a 10 man chosen unit of chaos marines and a demon prince. All of his units engaged my chosen unit, and all of my units engaged his vetran unit. At the end a few rounds of combat, both the veteran unit and the chosen unit were wiped out on the same round. My demon prince was never engaged/base contact with the librarian or the 3 man space marine unit. However all models were engaged in the same multicombat fight. That round I had killed 4 models to his 1 of my models killed.

So our question was since they were never engaged/base contact... is the combat over, do we consolidate and have a drink, or... it doesn't matter, its a multicombat and the fight isn't over until someone breaks or their side is totally wiped out, so we push in and continue combat. I personally thought that we need to do the morale checks, and push in. Not sure though.

We let the combat end, loser took morale checks and we both consolidated. What should we have done?

It is only one combat, 2vs3. You treat it as one combat, it turned into a 1vs2 combat, so the losing side takes morale/NoRetreat rolls as needed, then can sweeping advance (if possible) or Pile in.

Only way combat would end is if both sides pile in 6" and still can't make contact.

Thanks, the adjustment to 5th is a challenge.

It worked the same way in 4E.

hmmm.... I think I had it in my head that under 4th if you weren't in base contact at all at the end of combat, it ended. probably a judge ruled it that way on me and it just stuck... thats what you get when you don't question authority!
