So after a lot of discussion and we couldn't come to an agreement, we decided to let the good people at warseer have a go =)
Scenario: 10 marines charge 5 guants and lets say no casualties are inflicted. Next turn the nidz countercharge with a unit of hormaguants, now is it true that the marines aren't allowed to strike at the hormaguants? "reference page 41 under defenders react & Attacking"
I`am thinking that it means that if you are only i base to base contact with one of the nid units then you must allocate your attacks on that unit. But some of my friends think that it means that the marines can only attack the guants.
Thanks

Any Marines can strike at the Hormagaunts if and only if they are in base contact with the Hormagaunts, or are not in base contact with the Hormagaunts but are within 2" of another friendly model that is.

Catch me if you can.

That would be correct.

Because charges occur BEFORE combat, any model engaged with multiple units AFTER the charge, but BEFORE "any model attacks" may split their attacks. Any models that are only engaged with one unit after the charge may only make rolls against that particular unit.
Edit: just think about how this would work if multiple units charged at the same time, and I think it'll become clearer.

The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

And just to be completely clear about it, in case you have a combat which lasts across multiple assault phases either because not enough models get killed or new units keep joining:
You do what LordHat describes during each assault phase for that combat because which models are engaged can change as models are added, removed and moved around in the fights.

remember tho if your marines lets say inflict 3 wounds to the gaunts and none to the hormagaunts but the gaunts and hormagaunts dont inflict any to them, IF they arnt fearless they both must take a leadership test and can Both fail said test.and you can wipe them both out.
