Well, we played our first game again vampires. He had a dragon with a sorcerer lord, two units of very buffed knights, 3 plates of ghouls, and 2 caster characters. We lost pretty badly, but it was because we played terrible (first fantasy game and all ).
Our biggest problem in the game was the huge amount of space our cav took up....we could hardly move at all! That and the fact that our 2x hydras were wasted...due to us placing them poorly, one got charged and gibbed by dragon, the second got charged and gibbed by a unit of knights. His dragon ate through everything until it got to our lord, who stopped it in its tracks...but far too late.
The two sorcs did almost nothing the entire game....their most use was the 2x dispell scrolls which we used to dispell a spell that can move a unit 8" (van dance or something?). Their spells were weak against T4 ghouls, except for the AOE template one.
We were considering some pretty extreme changes, but I'm unsure as to how well they will work out...if we dropped both sorceresses and one unit of cold knights, we could change the lord+manticore to a master+manticore, and add in a lord+dragon (exact same as our current lord, but on a dragon vrs manticore. Manticore was messed up pretty quick, and it ended up just being our lord on foot).
My main concern is making a competitive list, but still having something fun. From all the lists I've seen, people are taking mostly a magic/shooty heavy list with very few mounted guys. I LOVE the cold ones, so much that all of our dark riders are modified cold one mounts+riders. Also of concern is using units that we have already purchased.....this game was 50% proxied pieces. Our models so far are: 2 units of CoK, 2 sorc (one mounted), lord on cold one, 10 corsairs, 2x hydra, manticore, 3 characters, and an assassin.
PS: Is it a good idea to pair units of slow black guard with faster hydras/CoK's/beasties?
