I started painting up an old skaven vermin lord model a few weeks back, but half way through painting it (i paint very slow) i managed to come off my bike and break my arm.
Ended up in a cast so i couldnt really paint as i couldnt move my fingers.
couldnt take it anymore thismorning so i got a hacksaw and my razor blade and adapted my cast so i could move my finges lol, the hurt like hell when i move them, but i was going to die of boredom, not my best work, but turned out ok i think, just needs basing now and a quick bit of ardcoat.

as allways, C&C welcome.
kinda annoyed that my cam didnt pick up alot of the highlighting, ill get more pics tomorrow in the daylight.

I love the old vermin lord! I always wanted one even though I don't play skaven.

The eyes are the coolest thing on there I think, I really like the bright green.

I like the skin and the fur, but maybe another highlight on the bone/horns. Or is it just that the camera didn't pick it up?

Finish that base!

Thanks,

MegaDave

It looks pretty good, but then the photo's are not top-knotch and I can't see all of the detail.

One tip though, if you break an arm and get a cast it is best to leave it be and not hack the cast up. There is a reason to not let you move your hand and fingers. It putts stress on the fracture!!!

But then again it is your life...

thanks dave, eyes were just done by watering down several greens.
its not showing alot up, the skin has 12 highlights, the bone has even more, same with the fur and warpstone, but cam wont pick them up, going to see a friend today, so ill use his cam and see what happens.
i need to buy some crap to base it with 1st

i know ravurion, but cant stand not being able to do anything, i would end up going mad if i couldnt paint, and i had started the model, so it needs finishing

I actually need to disagree with MegaDave, I think the model is incredible, but for me the eyes actually detract just a little.

The entire model is so well done, but then the eyes are such a contrast that my eyes were immedeately drawn to them, and IMHO, they are not up to par with the rest of the model.

I feel if they are that contrasting to the rest of the model they should be even more powerful then they are. Maybe a coat of 'ardcoat or other gloss to give a shiny "glowey" effect. or maybe subtly bleed the green out into the area around the eyes, giving a look of barely contained power that could be unleashed at any second.

Don't misunderstand, the model is awesome, something with they eyes just doesn't sit right with me.

PS...I feel ya about the slow painter trait, even without broken appendages it takes me forever sometimes!

thanks raptor, and i agree, im thinking about painting the eyes white, just leaving a green outline / glow.
didnt want to ardcoat it untill i was 100% finished, dont like painting over that stuff.

Yeah the Vermin Lord is a classic, I always liked that model (& his fluff too) I think you did good considering the hand injury.

WHat sort of bike was it? My friend came offf his motocross last month and shattered his ankle, no more jumping for him, he has lost rotation (he's just qualified as a tree surgeon too, I suppose it will effect his work).

I wouldn't advise doing any more painting though, got another mate who broke his leg a few years ago and took his cast off early because he was getting refused entry to bars and clubs, now he gets pain in his leg.

it was ment to be for the classic painting comp, but me being a slow painter ive missed it lol

it was a marin fox, just a trial BMX, came off a ramp into a flair and landed awkward, bars bent forward and pushed me into the ground arm 1st, so i wont be competing for a while now, got 4 months with this thing on, then they can take the plates of my arm just after that.

I may be in the minority, but oh well, I think the current eye color would be stellar if the majority of the model were darker, like the pelted side.

But since the rest of the model is so well done the way it is, not to mention less work involved, lightening the eyes seemed like an easier choice.....

But hey, thats just my opinion....still is good work.

Wow, I love what you've done here dude! The eyes are great from my perspective, love the glowing warpstone filled gaze.

Makes me want to do some ebay scouring for one of these old models...

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I don't have a problem with the eyes at all, but the not-particularly-shaded brown up against the drybrushed looking grey fur bits feel a bit awkward. My vote is for greyed flesh, like 'Eavy Metal stormvermin.

I've always hated citadel's idea of what a rat's tail looks like.

Nice job! The eyes are great, staff gemstone is great, musculature is sharp, and gore on staff is sick yet tasteful.

I have a few suggestions, please take or leave as you see fit:

1. The bone horns look a little less natural than the rest of the model--I very much like the shading in between each bony plate, and I suggest some more highlight drybrushing to bring down the gloss of the paint and add a bit more texture. Truth be told, I'm not a great painter of carapace/bone, so Tyranid experts will have better advice.
2. I'd like to see the gemstone in the center of the head lose the drybrush and instead get a typical gem treatment (gradient increasing lighting towards the bottom of the gem and a touch of white up at the top).
3. Bring up the fur patches with another light drybrushing.

Of all these suggestions, I most strongly encourage redoing the forehead gem for some awesome results.

I use Necrotales for tips on gemstone and carapace work. Again, great job and let's see even more models!

EDIT: Do not tone down the eyes! The lighting effect on the eye sockets is excellent, and the overall look is unique. Just my $.02.

ok, 14 votes to keep the eyes, 0 to change, they stay

i will change the fur, getting a better cam too so the highlights should show up alot more, but thinking about blending the skin into a grey ish tone as mentioned.
and i like the idea for the head ge, will do

thanks for everyones input so far

Wow, didn't realize it was going to create a ruckus...my bad.

Guess my perspective is the vast minority(read:lonely), but its things like this that make this hobby so much fun, one person's idea of an improvement is someone else's idea of a detractment.

I have some friends that have been recently getting into the game....or finally painting their own models.....and they are always asking, "how's this?" or "Does this look cool?"

My first answer is always,
"Do YOU like it?"
This is to me, the most important question, because there is no right or wrong way, and what I like isn't necissarily what they like. Once they answer, then we can get into specifics of what they don't like about it, or how it can be improved...in my opinion.

I guess what I'm saying is...
JD, What do YOU think about the eyes?
