It has begun. Months of collecting 15-20 year old models has culminated in me moving twice, and finally getting set up enough to do this.

Initially it will be the 1500 pts, then filled out with the rest of my classic collection, now over 300 models. After that is done, I'll begin to finish all the other units that have found homes in my clutches.

I started by assembling and priming 21 Bad Moon boyz, including 2 heavy weapons and 2 nobs (variety), Nazdreg, a dreadnought and 6 Deathskull Lootas.

I then went ahead and figured a whole new way to paint ork skin, to be more in line with the painting style of the early nineties. If I'm doing classic models, they're getting done classically.

So, one Bad Moon boy became the test model, and after a few days of labor, writing down color recipes, and getting a nice skin, yellow and blue, we have the first model completed.

I like everything but the all green bases. I know it was all the rage in 2nd edition, but I never could get used to it.

Look forward to seeing more of the 2nd ed era Orks.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Hooray Old Skool Orks! With old skool bases!

Maybe this will inspire me to paint my pile of 1-2nd ed. Orks.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

A little work in progress update before I leave for the weekend.

Skin and yellow is done, while blue needs a final highlight of enchanted blue.

I like the old Ork models because, unlike the new ones, they actually LOOK like they're S3.

The new ones have arms the size of a Space Marine's leg. On looks alone it's hard to accept that they're only as strong as a guardsman.

Not really my cup of tea, but they look very well painted. I could not get the skin to look like that myself...

keep up the good work, because maybe if I see more that I will also like the models...

Those are awesome. I've been doing a similar thing with 2nd edition Eldar, and a full sized 5th edition army done in a classic color scheme looks really cool.

Belphegor: you are very welcome, these guys are a blast to paint up.

Polonius: I'd love to see those eldar, I loved the 2nd edition color schemes.

92, I'm liking that Nazdreg. Very cool.

Tthe Bosspole is a cool design, too. Once he's painted, PLEASE post some close-ups of it!

I'm going to use thie thread as inspiration to getting my own Ork force started back up.

Of course, it is a bit depressing as I don't have enough Orks of the 2nd edition variety to do a complete force, so some of the really awesome looking models for the clans from way back will look out of place next to the new plastics... I think?

The old school Nobz are probably too small when next to a current edition 'regular' Ork boy.

It is a shame that GW only pays lip service to the old Ork clans...

Anyway, nice stuff, and I look forward to seeing more!

Close will be available once he's finished. For sure.

Alpharius: The 2nd edition stuff will be waaaay to small compared to the new stuff.

It is a shame that the klans have no effect on the game other than giving player a vague sense of flavor. Where as in 2nd, each clan would have specific advantages, ie: bad moons could have 2 heavy weapons, deathskulls could equip everyone with a kombi weapon of heavy weapon, snakebites could be mounted on boars, evil sunz on bikes, goffs could make half the unit into skarboyz.

If you ever want to get rid of those old models, let me know.

Ask and ye shall recieve! The color scheme isn't technically a 2nd edition one: the black undersuits was a 3rd ed convention, but I really like the look, and having a strong craftworld color trim, even when it clashes, is more "influenced" by second edition than taken from it. Still, the goal of my army is to be Orthodox Biel Tan, meaning that nobody could ever confuse any of my units for anything other than what they are. Dire Avengers are Blue/White, Banshees are Bone/red, and all troopers have at least some Green trim. Non-aspect units are all Green/Grey, and all units have appropriate runes. Gems are painted (for the most part) as gems and not as bumps in the armor. Metallics are used freely where metallics should be used, but weapons and wargear aren't painted in a neutral tone, they get heraldry just like anything else.

Here is a full squad of Dire Avengers:

LOL, this is great! Almost all of my models are 2nd ed, with a smattering of the newer Eldar. I have a large RT-era ork army that I'm breaking out once I have my eldars fieldable.

I still have (most of) the ork and gretchin models from the second edition boxed set. I think I even have a few of the marines.

Edit: A guy I know even half-heartedly wanted the orks to convert into an entire unit of WFB Boys all done up as southpaws.

Next on the painting table is another 5 bad moon boyz.

I had 3-4 of the buggies, along with scorchers and bikes, and my gem: the original plastic battlewagon (in box, on sprue, with instructions!).

Alas, they were sold to satisfy the wishes of She-who-must-be-obeyed, "You must get rid of this stuff before you buy any more!"

Now that I've got my boys in purple power to strip them down, I'm wishing that I still had them.

My Impression got from wow to the Ar-(Splat)-gh of head exploding as soon as I saw the roguetrader dread. You just made my day. Fantastic.

But on a little bit of critique, it is an statistical fact that the telekinetic field of the gamers will make more shots hit if the gunbarrels are drilled out. Drill them out.
