VIVA LA REVOLUTION! - Because sometimes you just need that fancy beginning on your post

Firstly, if you're not familiar with the Rebel Grotz of Gorkamorka, check out http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Rebel_Grots
Ever since I first got introduced to Gorkamorka through a friend of mine (who sadly only had two Ork gangs), I've liked
the Rebel grots. Those little communist/socialist/Che Guevaras/Cubans of 40k. The underdogs who finally broke out of
oppression with slogans such as 'Teef for all' and 'Equal rides!' So, after several 'swing and miss' attempts at starting a 40k force,
I've finally managed to convince myself that this one might keep going for a while. So without further ado; VIVA LA GROT!
(Pictures have been thumbnailed)

Army list:

Grenadier unit #1
- 5x Storm Troopers = 50
- 2 Plasma guns = 20
- Centaur w/EA = 50
=120

Grenadier unit #2
- 5x Storm Troopers = 50
- 2 Plasma guns = 20
- Centaur w/EA = 50
=120

Hardened Vets #1
- Veteran Sergeant = 13
- 5x Veterans = 40
- 2x Melta guns = 20
- 1x Flamer = 6
= 79

Hardened Vets #2
- Veteran Sergeant = 13
- 5x Veterans = 40
- 2x Melta guns = 20
- 1x Flamer = 6
= 79

Models: 22
Points: 398

Weapons:

- 4 plasma guns, 6 Hellguns, 2 heavy stubbers, 4 meltaguns, 2x flamers, 6 lasguns

Doctrines:

Veterans (aka "Dem though lads")
Grenadiers (aka "Da Revolutionariz!")
Drop Troops (aka "Sneaky ambushin' gitz!") - To make the veterans more versatile.

Possible additional doctrines: Close-order drill ("Huddle up ladz!"), Special weapon squads ("Da Boom boyz"),
Camoline ("Damned buggers are tiny!"/"Stay low, ladz")

This is the first colour scheme test unit, 5 grenadiers. I haven't finished the bases yet, but I really wanted to see how
they looked all dipped up and ready. For these I'll be using cadian and goblin bits, to get that uniformed look which
will set them apart from the rest of the Revolution. Think of them as the fanatics

First squad of Hardened veterans. These will be a mix of cadian, goblin and catachan parts. Once these are finished
they'll have the look of a more seasoned group, kitted up for hard fighting and long marches, rather than fanaticism.

Hardened veterans squad 2. The veteran sergeant (front and center, as is fitting) Has to be my favourite of the
bunch so far.

Unfinished grenadiers. Once I get hold of the bits, I'll remove the flamer nozzles and replace them with plasma ones.

I'll leave it up to your imagination what this will end up as. But a basilisk conversion might not be far off.

As you can see from my list, I'm still missing the two centaurs I need to make it fieldable.

Hope you enjoyed the look!

Long coats and fur caps anyone? Cool conversion, you almost made me go to the shop and buy IG to convert.

BTW what are you going to use as tanks, I would say that a ww2 flatbed truck model with a kannon on top would fit these guys just perfect.

Thanks for the encouragement people!

As for vehicles and future additions: I've decided to stick with a certain Imperial look.
I've ordered a FW centaur which hopefully won't take too long to get here, and I have
a Leman Russ and a damaged chimera that I'll turn into a basilisk. As for justifying it,
I figured the Revolution came across an Imperial Storehouse after breaking away from
the orks. There will be a X-Men'esque explanation for this as soon as I've written it up

On another matter: how would you all suggest I arm my veterans? Shotguns or lasguns?

The Red Gobbo is probably my favourite model from the GW range! I'm on the lookout for him, but the last ebay-auction I tried
ended up at about $35 before ending, so I'm quite content with it taking a while

If you're refering to the sentence I included in the first post, then you've got nothing to worry about. It stops at that Now I can see how some might consider the colour scheme and berets a 'tribute' to some political movement, but that is not my intent. This is a modeling project, regardless of my personal views on aforementioned politicos

And a huge thanks to all of you who have taken an interest in this project of mine. Especially those of you that have gone out of your way to track down Red Gobbos.
Dod was kind enough to trade me an old Gorkamorka Head Honcho a while back, he'll probably end up as a veteran sergeant once I figure out how to remove his hair.

A quick progress report as well; I've painted and dipped one hardened veteran squad, pictures will be up once the dip has dried up.

Thanks for the compliments people!

Quicky update before I head off for some well needed sleep:

The first of my Hardened Veterans are finished! In homage to the original Gorkamorka world, I chose to base them
in a sort of deserty, badlandish manner. Light sand painted with graveyard earth, a bit of wood chips and some static
grass, topped off with a few beastial brown spots, because I liked how they 'warmed'

Based Grenadier squad

And for those of you mentioning the 'commisar' grot; the idea for one has been in the work since I started this project.
He's since been dismantled, but I do have this crappy webcam picture of him being sticky-taced:

Well dakkaites, I have a question for you

When I started this project, I chose to include two grenadier squads due to one simple fact.
I didn't want to start out by doing 50 grotzmen! Keeping two obligatory troop choices at a
minimum ment I could focus on the units I'd want to model, instead of trudging my way through
all those grotzmen before being able to play.

Now with the new Imperial Grotz-codex on the horizon, and not to mention for the sake of diversity,
I've come to the fact that I'll eventually have to include some platoons. I've decided that as a side
project to all those nifty elites, fast attacks and heavy support, I'll steadily be painting up two platoons
with two squads in each. That means two command sections, and four squads of guardsgrotz.

Now this in itself isn't that special. A IG army fielding platoons?! Though it has left me in a bit of a bind,
as I really can't figure out how to model and paint them!

So far, I've used these themes (see pictures);
Grenadiers: Cadian armour and arms; red beret with yellow icon, red shoulderpads and armour,
graveyard earth fatigues, brown leather boots, "wooden" lasguns
Veterans: Both cadian and catachan parts; red beret with yellow icon, graveyard earth shoulderpads
and armour, graveyard earth+kommando khaki fatigues, "wooden" lasguns.

How would you suggest I model and paint those infantry platoons? I want something that gives a unified look,
as if they're in uniform. And I'd like to keep with the colour palette I've used so far.

So far I have thought of two options;
1: Strictly cadian parts, similar paint scheme to the veterans, with one shoulderpad painted red
2: Mix of cadian and catachan parts, similar paint scheme to the veterans, no extra equipment pars

Right now, I'm leaning towards number 1. I have some 3 tons of grenade and waterbottle bitz lying around, so
it would be a shame not to use them

Suggestions?

Quickie update:

Today the first of my two centaur artillery tractors arrived from FW. I've only had a little time to toy with it, but here's
what I've got so far:

IT ROCKS!

*cough cough* Well then, being serious again. This is one of the nicest, most detailed kits I've seen. And the size is
excellent for it's usage. I'll do a separate thread about this in the Modelling forum, but for now, consider these numbers:

Chimera size (Length-width-height): 12cm - 9,5cm - 5,5cm
Centaur size (Length-width-height): 8cm - 6,5cm - 3,8cm

It almost fits inside the back of a chimera

While my (now officially favourite 40k-piece in the world) centaur is enjoying a nice soak in a mix of water and soap, I've
been working on a few ideas about what to model next. I thought I'd toss around some ideas with you all, and see what
you think. As always, input is greatly appriciated.

Infantry Platoons
There seems to be no way around them. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I'll make two of these (that's 55 grotzmen)
as a side project, since I'm in no rush to finish them. They just have to be ready for when the new IG codex probably removes
the possibility of using grenadiers in centaurs as troop choices. Likely armament will be grenade launchers and missile launchers.
Not the most efficient setup, but then again, that's not what I'm going for.

Command HQ
I'm not sure what to do with this one. I'm fairly certain I'll include the Red Gobbo once I get him, but I can't really see him as the
leader, given the apperance of the rest of the grotzmen. I'm working on a pencil sketch of what I'll hopefully manage to scult my
commander as. More to come once I've got it finished.

Special Weapon squads
These will be the regular 2x flamers and demo charge setup. For the demo charges I've chosen to include a bomb squig in each
squad, purely for esthetics. One of the troopers will be modeled to symbolize the 'carrier.' Not sure what parts I'll be using to make
the troopers themselves, but I'm leaning towards cadian parts with camo paint.

Cyclops Demo vehicles
One of the funniest things to come out of the Imperial Armour series, and also the most obvious choice of models; I'll be using two
of the bomb squigs with the mine attached to their heads, with a small aerial on their back, all mounted on a larger base. The
controller will be a grotzman seated next to a catachan vox-link bit.

Arco-flagellants OR Death Cult Assassins
I have no idea if I'll ever use these (the fact that they require a priest is the least of their problems), but with the night goblin fanatics
now coming three in a box AND in plastic, makes it too easy a conversion to ignore. Remove the huge balls at the end of the chains,
and attach assorted slicy bitz scrounged from all over the place. 'nough said.

A second idea: since the arco-flagellants are a bit hard to field, I've come upon the idea of fielding these as Death Cult Assassins. Or
both... though not at the same time.

Ogryns
Ok, so I know that their rules are crapalicious. But that's never stopped me before I've been running ideas for these through my
head over and over, and come up with this; in regular Ork armies, the grotz serve the orks. Now how about it being the other way
around in the revolution? Keeping with the remote-controlled theme of the bomb squigs, one could use a couple of mega-armoured
nobz with added aerials and controllers as Ogryns? They certainly have the right size, although the amount of armour is bound to
cause some confusion.

Gorgon
Now there's no way in [insert supposedly warm place here] that I'll be buying a Gorgon from FW. But the idea of giving my Grot
commandante a pimped-up ride along the lines of Jabba the Hut's Sand Crawler-palace thingy for Star Wars is tempting. I'd
probably have to scour the local toy shops for something that could be converted into one, but the idea is there.

Inquisitorials
It seems every Imperial Guard player these days has a little Inquisitorial backup unit in their collection. And why shouldn't they?
It's a great oppourtunity for some creative modelling, not to mention working with something other than those guardsmen. I've not
decided upon anything in this regard, though it seems prudent to use Night Goblin minis for this part of the force, thus keeping with
the same theme as the acro-flagellants/Death Cult Assassins. In this way, I can have them represent some religious faction within
the Revolution, or perhaps some other native grot tribe? The possibilities are endless!

Time to chime in fellows! How do you feel about these ideas? Suggestions for other possible conversions?

al-Majid Agandhjin bin Ahfal al-Rashid

At long last, the Revolution has liberated its first vehicle; a centaur!

I'm really happy that I went with the Forgeworld original. It looks great, and fits my Grotzmen perfectly
It has just been primed, hopefully it will be painted at some point during the weekend. As for a comparison
with the Chimera:

In short, I'd say it's about 40-50% of the size of a Chimera. It almost fits within the back compartment!

Incidently, another vehicle that soon might be liberated by the Revolution can be seen in the background. Those
Tallarns of mine won't be using it anytime soon, so might as well grotify it.

And because I came across the kit really cheap at the FLGS:

On a related matter; I'm still on the lookout for a Red Gobbo, should anyone have one they'd be willing to part with
at a reasonable price.

Thanks for looking!

al-Majid Agandhjin bin Ahfal al-Rashid

Edit: because I suddenly had some spare time on my hands tonight - How the centaur looks after about 1 hour of work.
Flash made havoc with the Bestial Brown that's blended at different spots on the tank, but that's to be expected. So far,
I'm quite happy with how gritty and worn it looks.

Being sick and stuck inside at least gave me the time to work one the Revolution a bit. Studies are
taking up most of my time these days, but at least there's been a little progress:

This is my (for now) Junior Officer. I got the gnarly squig from the Night Goblin Fanatic sprue, and I though he fit
perfectly as a pet 'chisquigva.' For now, he's a power weapon, with a temper to compensate for his small size.

The bearer of the Revolutionary slogan banner, and the first of two demo-charge handlers for my special weapon teams.
The green stuff-work on his spear didn't really look like anything, so it got peeled off.

Quick shot of the force so far. At the back is an old Leman Russ that's just gotten a new undercoat. On the right are my
three death-cult assassins/Arco-flagellants, and to the front are my first command HQ. For now I've given them no
upgrades besides the banner, since I'm unsure how they will be fielded.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome

You know Agandhjin, I have been a lurker on this site for some time. I love reading about all the wonderful projects everyone is working on has been really inspiring. When I came across your thread about the "Revolution" I just had to join up and say "Well Done!". I have followed your thread with great enthusiasm and I love your army and idea.

That centaur has to be one of the coolest ideas for a troop transport for those guys I have seen. Any chance of some not-so flashy pics? I would love to see all of the detail work on it.

Now my only critcism is more of a question. Being that they raided a IG storehouse they probably found most of the stuff new. But how would they perform field repairs? I know from the fluff I read that you have typed up that they are trying to not be so orky but wouldn't they have a complete lack of knowledge of how to fix STC equiptment? I remember from Gorkamorka their stuff was always kinda ratty looking. Maybe a hole with some 2x4's slapped up to fix it? Im not saying ork it out but some more haphazardness would add alot of character.

Just my 2 cents...

Great blog though and watching intently.

I would recomend to drop the Inq guys for a true IG. The fanatics are cool for FB but I donĀ“t think they fit (plus I also dislike the archflagelant concept to boot) As for a Gorgon a LST or LSM model with threads on the sides could be nice.

M.

Jenkins: You don't have jurisdiction here!
Smith Jamison: We aren't here, which means when we open up on you and shred your bodies with automatic fire then this will never have happened.

About the Clans: "Those brief outbursts of sense can't hold back the wave of sibko bred, over hormoned sociopaths that they crank out though."

Always happy to bring out new members burb. Welcome and thanks!

I'll give the photos another shot, but I have a feeling there will still be some flash there. Give me a few days and I'll see what I can do.
As for the technology question, you present a valid point. And while I'd like to say that there's a fluffy reason for me not orkin' up their
equipment, there isn't. The reason is simply that I'm close to incapable of making something appear ramshackle. And believe me, I've
tried I guess I'm too much of an esteticist (if that's even a word) for it to appear orked.

I've tried to figure out how they'd be able to use the equipment. Then I had an idea. Some orks use looted weapons in their weapon
rigs, and the 'Looted tanks' show us that they're capable of adapting technology to their use. Well if something works, why fix it?
Consider the X-men narrative quote;

Mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet.
This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward.

Now we've seen orks evolve along different lines. What if something changed in the grot spores that fell on this particular planet? Orks evolved as
usual, but some grotz were imbued with a stronger sense of self than usual, not to mention a greater affinity for technology? It might not be the
best explanation, but it's AN explanation

As for the Inquisitorials Miguelsan, I find we're in agreement. The fanatics were fun to work on, but seeing them alongside the others just makes
them scream 'FANTASY BATTLE!' I still want to do up an inquisitorial representative later on, but it's on the back-burner for now.

As for those Gorgon-stand ins you mention, care to elaborate? I'm not familiar with either LST or LSM, so some further help would be appriciated
