yeah,
I want 9 obliterators but I hate the current model, they are seriously ugly with only two poses and weapons that don't match the rules!
At £12 a pop it will cost £108 which is a bit much for something I don't like... So I'm going to scratch build, I have lots of citadel bits for bodies and weapons.

Edit/update:
The first 15 or so posts this thread are Idea generating... I eventually decided on what to make.

18thMarch2009: I decided on building SLUG obliterators...
based loosly on my friends bloodbowl beast of nurgle and the new forge world herald.
and taking it's initial inspiration from ArbitorIans Obliterators...

He are pics of my custom Iron Warriors Obliterators:

I too despise the GW models (both new and old). I wanted to make a sort of mini battlesuit bristling with weapons. I eventually settled on using AT-43 miniatures (Red Blok walkers) as the base and then just went to town attaching GW chaos bits and weapons.

These are the minis I used:

I think these would work also:

Sorry, I just realized that you aren't looking to spend too much money on getting 9 Obliterators into your army. Buying three box sets of those AT-43 walkers is going to cost more than getting GW oblits. Who knows, maybe you can find a deal somewhere?

What about using the Black Reach Terminators as a base? You'll probably be able to get them from eBay or some online bits seller quite cheaply.

Treads in place of legs seems like a rather decent route to go. Makes sense too, when your guy is bearing a crapton of weaponry. Spider-like legs work too. Tombspiders may be an option. Look at the Soulgorger for inspiriation

yeah,
Ok so my thoughts at the moment is I've got spare terminator bodies. I've been buying epic parts online, mostly for the weapons.

  • centaur idea- Robotic horse men.
  • Or redstarone's type of obliterators> looking at epic tanks to make jonney5 type treads bottom.

  • either way i'll have all 9 with the same bits for body and legs (arms don't matter they are morphing).

    Panic>...

Edit: removed the images because they were mockups and showing up in the new article system...
Edit: edited post- I've kinda run with the centuar idea... I'm making SLUG bodies kinda beast of nurgle centaurs!

I like the centaur idea very well. You could also mix spawn parts with them to make them a little more daemonic.
You might also be able to get some old warmachine bitz on ebay to mix it up a little.

Honestly though, I think the centaur look has a lot going for it, though there have been a lot of good Obliterator conversions.

given that the GW Oblits look like mutated and overgrown termies (and fluffwise it makes sense that being turned into an Oblit is a 'blessing' mutation from a Chaos God), heavily converting termies would be the simplest _cheap_ approach if you're a good converter - you could use any of the plastic termy models (or any old metal ones) as a base, which should be fairly cheap

    yeah,
    ...
Inspired by My friends scratch built beast of nurgle for blood bowl, and the new FW herald.
I figured that Nurgle Obliterators would be pretty mixed up with the bio/mechanical obliterator virus and the biological virus's of nurgle...
I proposed that the obliterator cult following my Army had been infected by beast of nurgle deamonhood...

Now they exist as SLUG like weapon platforms:
These are WIP shots of the lower body construction.
the upper body is a mock up... to get a feel for size and how they'll Look.

    ...
Next stage is to make 6 resin copies of the slugs.

If successful and I have the copies I'll be adding unique details to each SLUG. and making a unique obliterator upper body guns cables/hoses to the lower body etc...
    what do you think?

They look pretty fantastic. I think the best bits are the 'rippling' edges of the sole, and the random parts jutting from the mass. Looking forward to the paint job. My only complaint would be that you should really emphasise the edges of the sole, so widen them a bit, and make them jut out more if possible. Also, maybe keep a bottle of greasy liquid to hand so you can leave a trail on your battle board as they move about :p

    Other than that awesome job!

Do legos work pretty well for doing molds? I'd never thought of that, have you tried it before? I'm anxious to see how they turn out.

    yeah,
    Haha, I had similar concerns!
I poured the first layer of silicone into the legos, with the lego house inside a plastic basin!

This is the mold with the first side dry (about 4 hours later).
It's upside down and I've removed the clay.
The result seems good... I have high hopes for this!

This time I was confident I didn't need the plastic basin.
The silicone is fairly sticky and kinda like thick custard.

    yeah,
update: I've finnished casting the slug bodies...
a few photos of the casts and the molds...

this is the mold cured and solid with the lego removed.

I cut it into three separate molds one for each SLUG.
I then split each in half along the silicone layers.

I reassembled the lego around the three molds... and poured in the resin...

Resin gets really hot when it cures...it gives off fumes and it stinks. it's a chemical reaction that make it go hard.
because of the translucent dirty brown colour... it's kinda hard to see the detail level in the photo, but I'm really happy with how they turned out.
you'll have to take my work for it the detail is sharp... but i had a few air bubbles in there, some bubbles obscured details, but others i'm sure will look great as part of the model. Also I had way more flash than I was hoping for/expecting.

    more pictures of each set

and a taste of things to come... all 9 slugs...

    So what do you think?

First off, I think these are great!

There are a few things I would do if I where you. I would keep the originals "just in case" and have Resin castings for all nine.

I would make the top part more "pus cannons and snot throwers" then mechanical portions. Convert three of them up and cast them as well, that way you have a crap ton of combinations!
