I'm making a 10 man strong rough riders squad and I'm in need of some opinions and answers.

My intention is to give most or all of them hunting lances. The rules state they can replace their laspistol or ccw with the lance. Does it make more sense to give them a ccw to use when the lance is gone or a pistol?

The rules say a guardsman not using a special weapon may take a vox caster, do lances count as special?

If I want to upgrade my sgt to a veteran, does the lance count as a one handed weapon choice?

As of right now I've built 5 with lances in the right hand and nothing in the left. If it doesn't effect the ability to take a lance I would like to have one with a vox caster. I wouldn't mind giving the veteran sgt either a plasma pistol or power weapon or some variety of bolter be it storm bolter or regular, I would definately like opnions on that. I haven't really put much consideration into special weapons, my intent is to use them offensively against infantry.

I would like to eventually make some smaller roughrider squads for tank hunting or swarm control later on so I'm not putting to much priority on special weapons for this current squad. Anyway, hope someone can offer some help. I should be posting pix of the work in progress pretty soon. Making roughriders out of the new cold one knights has been really easy so far.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

check the rules on the hunting lance.
you cant use a close combat weapon with it.

I don't believe that Hunting Lances count as Special Weapons for the purposes of taking Vox Casters.

Also, it makes more sense to give them a Pistol. A close combat weapon literally gives them no advantage over a Pistol, while a Pistol can be fired in the Shooting Phase (albeit to little effect).

Yeah, pistols and the like cannot be combined with a hunting lance to get the extra attack. Otherwise they would just be too nasty. THe vet sgt can still have a lance and a power weapon. The first turn of combat you would use the lance then the power weapon from then on.

"Do NOT ask me if you can fire the squad you forgot to shoot once we are in the assault phase, EVER!!!"

Yeah a power weapon would probably be a good choice. I was considering a plasma pistol but I think a power weapon makes more sense, half the cost and it's one of the few squads I intend on assaulting with.

Usually, the Power Weapon is a waste. After their initial, devastating charge, Rough Riders will almost always have made up significantly more than their points, and should move on to harraying enemy units, without being concerned about the amount of kills they get.

The 6 point Vet upgrade is worth it, in my eyes, only because of the extra Hunting Lance attack, and not for Armoury Access, or extra attacks in later turns.

Here's some shots of them primed. Still not sure what color to paint the cold ones.

Wait...
I was under the impression that you only get one hunting lance strike per model, regardless of the Attack value in their stat line.
Does anybody have some valuable insight into this?

That's pretty damn cool.

Orks are like those neighbor children who aren't invited to your parties and they come right in anyway.

Not true. You can only use the Hunting Lance for one assault phase, but you can have multiple attacks. For instance, a unit of charging Rough Riders would have 2 Attacks each (1 base, +1 for charging).

As Hunting Lances are two-handed weapons, there is no way for Rough Riders with Hunting Lances to get the bonus attack for two single-handed weapons.

Also, I love the look of the Cold One Rough Riders. That's something I've been planning for a while, and they look fantastic.
