I am starting a Salamanders army with the release of the new codex. The idea behind the list is pretty simple. I am unsure how competitive it is, but I think it will be fun to play nonetheless.

HQ - Vulkan

10 man tac squad - flamer, multimelta, rhino
10 man tac squad - flamer, multimelta, rhino
10 man tac squad - melta, multimelta, pfist rhino

5 man terminator squad, heavy flamer
5 man terminator squad, heavy flamer

land raider redeemer, pintle mounted multimelta
land raider redeemer, pintle mounted multimelta

In objective based missions the plan is to break into combat squads and run the multimeltas behind the rhinos for the first few turns and set up a firebase upfield. The land raiders can hit priority targets.

Seems solid to me and certainly one general build I am working toward as a current salamander player. I'd consider swapping terminators for t-hammer variety (the mastercrafted combined with the 3+ inv is nasty). Gets you 20 points -- enough for two combi-weapons on the tac sgts.

That is the list I'm planning to make! With the Thunder hammers of course.

Salamander Marines 65-12-13
Dark Eldar Wych Cult 4-1-0
Dark Eldar Kabal 36-10-4
2010 Indy GT Tournament Record: 11-6-3
Golden Ticket Winner with Dark Eldar

I agree that the 3+ invul is very nice. The thunder hammers do not impress me much more than regular power fists, and a TL heavy flamer is going to pack serious punch. I was under the impression that upgrading to a heavy flamer was only 5 points. I feel like with the larger numbers of bodies hitting tables, 3+ invuls will be less impressive and an extra flamer will be more useful (its not like the terminators will be that much worse in assault).

Perhaps I will take one squad of each and try to get some combi-flamers on the sgts. They are definitely worth it.

Thunderhammers are master-crafted with Vulcan, FOR FREE! That alone makes them the better choice over fists with your list.

salamanders look pretty good but i have'nt seen the new codex and a friend of mine told me that white scars are really good in the new codex is that true? if so could you tell me why and in terms of your list spif thunder hammers on those squads will give you some dedicated assault rather than makeshift assault giving your army more flexibilty

I dont think any salamander players will be taking Lascannons, when flamers and meltas are considered TL when Vulkan is in the army. LasC wouldnt be very fluffy either.

The going rate for two heavy flamers in the terminator squads is one combi-flamer on a Sgt. not too impressive. I do agree it would be nice to have a squad of terminators that can stand up to power weapons after they get into assault (or plasma fire after a combat) they can roll with Vulkan and it will be a 2+/3+ party. With the points I can drop the P-Fist for a set of combi-flamers on the tac squads. Juggling which combi-weapons to take, or to take P-Fists in the tac squads or not can be juggled around pretty easily.

HQ - Vulkan

10 man tac squad - flamer, multimelta, combi-flamer, rhino
10 man tac squad - flamer, multimelta, combi-flamer, rhino
10 man tac squad - melta, multimelta, combi-flamer, rhino

5 man assault terminator squad (all TH/SS)
5 man terminator squad, heavy flamer

land raider redeemer, pintle mounted multimelta
land raider redeemer, pintle mounted multimelta
