So after finding some inspiration on the internet I decided to save some money and make some cheap kroot hounds out of gaunts and hormagaunts. Cut off the necks, drill a depression in the body and glue the head right on, and greenstuff over the arm-holes. Not perfect (torso is just a tad too long) but they look pretty good.

Unfortunately to me they still look a bit too much like gaunts. What I want to try to do is give them spikes or spikey hair like kroot/kroot hounds have. Maybe this should be simple but I'm not much of a modeler when it comes to anything other than a little green stuff or simple kitbashing or magnetizing. Does anyone have any good, inexpensive ideas of what I could use to add kroot and kroot hound-like spikes to the head or backs of the gaunts?

I'll post pictures later if needed, but they don't look that exciting - neckless, armless gaunts.

a lion-style mane of hair/fur would be the obvious option - and actually one of the easier things to greenstuff

If you can round up some spare kroot heads, you can cut off the spines for the backs and use some green stuff to make a quick beak on the newly shaved-down head.

This is one I made:
