In the dark angels codex under combat squads on pg 23 it states the following about combat squads.

If you decide to break the unit down then each combat squad is treated as a separate unit for all game purposes from that point, and count as a scoring unit if it still has half or more of its starting models, ect.

My question is ..Would units outside of the troops choice (heavy, elite, ect) count as scoring if you break them into combat squads. As long as they are above half strength of course?

Yes and no.

Yes the rules appear to say devastators (as an example) count as scoring when broken up into combat squads.

No in that this is not how it will be ruled at your next tournament nor the way you should play it with your friends.

It's the same thing as counting as a scoring unit if they were a scoring unit in the first place.

Devastators, being Heavy Support, are not a scoring unit and so Devastator combat squads would not be scoring units.

If I was ruling on it in a tournament, I would almost have to rule a combat squaded dev squad would count as scoring as per the codex.

The combat squad rules never states the FO spot it comes from and makes not distinction. A transport is ruled out by the rulebook, the location for that is irrelevant. As for the rest of the unit, it does not seem like it would matter.

You can't even make the argument that no other forces have choices (except troops) are scoring, as the new marine codex has ways to make a unit that is not a troop choice scoring.

Remember the codex is talking about 4th edition rules.... You know where anything could take an objective claim a table quarter and in kill games the unit scored points...

My current interpretation under 5th edition would be.

1. A battle squad from any squad is 1 KP in a KP game. (You just nicely doubled your available kill points for your opponent)
2. A battle squad from a tactical squad (troop choice) can claim an objective
3. A battle squad from any squad can contest an objective.
4. Disregard the statement about being over half strength. A single trooper that is not broken can contest/control any objective based on rule 2 or 3 already applying.

This was a fleeting benefit to Dark Angels and Blood Angels in 4th edition when you were totalling points killed.

Example:

165 for 10 man squad. 1 Melta gun, Power fist for the sergeant and heavy bolter. Total cost 210.

I battle squad it and put the sergeant and melta gun in a 5-man and the heavy bolter in the other...
Each is worth 105 to my opponent even though the one I am going to get close to the enemy is really worth 125 points. This is gone.

At my store we had to get a ruling from the GW Rep'. for the 'Ard Boyz It took them 3 Days to give us the answer.
After the Armour company issue. They said yes DA squads are scoring including the landspeeder for Ravenwing. Only because their codex says so. The down side is that when their troop choices combat squad and are below half strength then they can only contest.
This is how we ran it for the ard boyz and how we're running it for the semi-finals.

Well, of course you would, or else you wouldn't have started the thread.

The question is, will the judges at the tournaments you attend rule it that way?

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair.
