Hey all, figured I would take my initial concept in the Painting and Modeling section of the Yellow Ork and make a full on Plog about it! After all the enthusiastic comments I decided to get a good start going today and I base coated and washed all of my AoBR Orks in my lovely grungy yellow theme!

Woo, looking good right? tomorrow hopefully will have the skin finished, but with WAR out my free time seems to be sucked into cyberspace. We'll see how it goes.

I figure as this log progresses I'll figure out some good fluff for them and decide on a clan to be a part of once I start getting more models.

And for those of you who missed it before, here's the (nearly) finished concept which all the Orks should end up lookin like.

Enjoy!

Looks great! (I voted purple for the tattoos, though I must admit that bright blue is really nice) The teeth are good too; overall it's a really well put together scheme, very full and "together" (for lack of a better word). Can't wait to see the rest, especially the trukks. (...purple, maybe!)

Very nice. In relation to one of the comments above, whilst I think it's great that you went for a dirty, earthy palette, I think the silver stands out. I think rusty browns and oranges would complement the yellow of the skin, especially as it's the overriding colour.

I'm not crazy about the blue but i agree that the yellow benefits from being broken up. I would limit this to being the only bright colour, and tone the (pretty bright) silver down drastically.

Thast's just my view. Very nicely painted and a good idea; the orks look perfectly natural to me.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

I like it. And I like the blue warpaint/tattooing. Creates a nice contrast.
I agree about trying earthier metal colors.

I am fully aware that I need to rust up the metal, I'm just trying to figure out a good recipe on how to do it. Suggestions?

Thank you all for the compliments though!

It might sound a bit weird, but mix in browns to the metals. It looks like you've used Chainmail which (personally) I think is way too bright to begin with. Try some Snakebite leather and Boltgun Metal, and play around until you find a shade that suits you, Then go and slap some of the new brown washes on (Gryphonne Sepia etc). I like these as they aren't too intrusive and they never crack like to older ones, which were really crap in some cases... a bad workman blames his tools?

How did you do the skin, by the way?

I really like the work so far. It goes against the grain, and will definitely stand out in a crowd, in a good way. I look forward to more updates!

Skin is:

Slightly watered down Tausept Ochre
HEAVY wash of full on Delvin Mud
Drybrush of Tausept Ochre
Drybrush of 50:50 Tausept Ochre and Iyanden Darksun
Drybrush of full on Iyanden Darksun
Drybrush of 50:50 Iyanden Darksun and Golden Yellow
Picket out the highest spots of full on Golden Yellow

As for your metal recipe, mixing snakebite with a metal is something i would have never thought of, but I'll surely give it a go. just to be clear, the metal work isnt done in the nearly finished pic, I just didnt know what to do with it

Yeah, I thought that might be the case although I though you deserved credit for the work so far!

The metal idea came about from some tiny snippet in an old WD; I think it was one of the 'Eavy metal guys who had painted and Inquisitor or something. It's most commonly done with black and Boltgun Metal to produce a really deep finish.

I found this to be pretty useful, check it out:

my biggest complaints with orks is that they all look the same on the table. the look of various armies doesnt change much from one person to the next. I think this is a really nice departure from the standard, and the brown/yellow coloration really makes the blue stand out ay more than it would on green skin.

And with all of them having all sorts of different markings of warpaint a mob of them should look pretty damn cool! Now if only I could model them in kilts and have them mooning the enemy...hmmm possible future project?

Alright all, I need help. The members of the Yellow Waaagh needs a clan name! Help me come up with something basadd and yellow-related and you'll all be treated to some new FINISHED piccies!

So far all I've come up with is the Sunburst Boyz, which is okay, but needs more Orky Oomph!

Maybe you would be better of by not picking a name with yellow. Maybe something allong the lines of the bigger badder raze...

not a lot of other clues i am afraid...

I like the skin tone. I was never a fan of the pure green orc skin. When I finally get ahold of black reach I'll be painting my orcs more a dull green using rotten flesh, or maybe a desert yellow with green wash

For rusted metal I just start with a black undercoat, drybrush boltgun metal but not too heavy, and then I use watered down snakebite leather and just paint it on in splotches. You can use other shades of brown too and kind of layer it in different spots. It's pretty quick and gives ya a good tabletop quality at least.

Alright, came up with a Clan name, though it sounds a little too educated for Orks, but it does sound good.

The Fallowed, Waaagh ________ (enter Warlords name)

Trying to come up with a background for the Yellow Waaagh I figure some Mad Doc is experimenting around with Orky genetics, but ssince he of course really knows nothing on the subject, he somehow changes the algae in the blood into a yellow color. Thinking he's ruined his experiment, he throws the batch of fungus out where it is able to mature and form into Orks of a different color! fairly simple, somewhat silly, and easily expanded upon.

EDIT

I guess I should expand upon how I came up with the name

started at: http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/yellow

followed to: http://www.aolsvc.merriam-webster.aol.com/dictionary/fallow

which ended at: http://www.aolsvc.merriam-webster.aol.com/dictionary/fallow%5B4%5D

keeping in mind that the background for why they are yellow is because some Ork mad scientist was trying to make better orks, but since he of course doesnt know what he's doing, he turns the algae in their blood yellow. Figureing he screwed up that batch, he threw the fungus out onto some wild planet where it actually matured into orks that think they are bigger and better, but really are just yellow orks

Just to clarify I took a synonym of yellow, which is fallow, followed the definition of fallow to find out a second meaning for the adjective version of the word, which happens to mean "left untilled or unsown after plowing" which can be thought of metaphorically as the fungus left on the planet after being tinkered with
