Buy a pot of GW black wash. It'll really help with the flat colors you're using.

2nd. GW's washes are great and it goes on quick and easy enough to that you wont burn yourself out doing it on tons of guardsmen. You might want to use the blue wash as well for the uniforms depending on the final shade you'd prefer.

3rd. GW's washes blend colours, i.e create darkened spots where they should be, i.e the creases in the uniform, and creaves on the armour

Yes, I concur. Washes are the key. Badad black those metal areas like swords, get a blue wash for the clothes and armor and a gryphonne sepia for the flesh maybe.

And I don't know if these incomplete or not, but basing them always adds a nice aura of texture and detail.

Nice color scheme!

ok so ill go get some washes then thank you guys!

as for basing them what suggestion would you make, keep in mind i am OCD in this aspect as using a grass based guy on pavement would drive me nuts!

I think the blue black breaks up the model more, simply because all the cloth detail is lost with the black.

I like the gray ones. If you want to do easy COD bases, then do what they did in the tandaris outbreak campaign. i.e. Sand the bases smooth, then add detail in the form of lines that have been carved in with a scriber, strips of thick card, and various other little bits that make the ground look more industrial. Granted, that basing technique makes it look a tad more spaceshippy, than COD, but it's still good. I did it on my guard and it seems to have worked fine.

I like the grey/black. A good wash and some dry brushing of highlights will really help, but other than that they are looking good. A fully painted army always looks good, even if not well done, and I am so sick and tired of seeing seas of plastic guardsmen. So congratulations and thank you from at least one other gamer for trying to paint your IG-Joes. Even if they are for the forces of Cobra! But just think how cool your Leman Russ will look done up like a HISS tank!

Onto the bases.. if you are OCD about it then I suggest going with something like a very generic catch-all style. Instead of going the route of highly detailed or scenery specific bases you could for the "gaming piece" effect. By that I mean instead of trying to make make each base look as if it is the extension of a diorama, use colors and basing that really compliment the model. Display type bases instead of scenic.

You can't fix stupid.

To answer this directly:

I'd suggest using one of those print your own water slide decal kits. You could just get a copy of the Cobra serpent logo off the internet somewhere and edit it. Maybe put the serpent at the center with Imperial Eagle style wings on the sides?

See if your local hobby store has the waterslide decal sheet for your printer. Find the cobra image, shrink to size, print, seal, and there you have it. My buddy does his own and they look nice.

I like the GW washes fair enough but I prefer making the wash colors myself using the same opaque colors used on the model. My only real gripe w/ the GW washes is they come out very shiny. This isn't a real issue if you remember to seal the model however.

Now to make some "Joe's" from the catachan IG?

Oh man, you haven't tried the NEW washes, that shiny crap is gone, the new ones rule. The bottle looks like the Citadel bottles but with a black cap. They work fantastic.

Cool. I'm doing something a lot more elaborate because I mainly do it for the painting, so when I have a couple done I'll post them.

In the meantime, nice work, I like the scheme, mine are also sort of COD.

Blue hood or battle helmet?

A plain hood would be easy greenstuff work. Or you could use a standard Cadian helmet with some greenstuff as the base for the combat helmet variant. Either way I'd say that would be pretty WYSIWYG for a trademark item, don't ya think?

Okay for the tank I'm going to make some suggestions based on the colors I see you using already.

1st off I am liking the black hull with the blue lightning like pattern, just make the "lightning" lines much much thinner (like 1/4 of what they are now). Make sure to highly or drybrush the black with the light grey color you are using.

The big glaring problem I see on the first two tanks is way to much of that brilliant red! Take a look at how the battle cannons are painted in the various photos in the IG dex and main rulebook, and at how sponson weapons are painted. Generally you'll see they are not one solid color. Make the housing or barrel shrouding the red color, and then use one of the grey colors you like with boltgun for the other detail parts of the gun.

My suggestion would be: Black hull with thin lighting pattern, red muzzle break on the battle cannon and center cowling on the barrel, with boltgun on the between parts and the gun mantel painted grey. Make the heavy bolters red with the muzzle boltgun, and the rest of the pivoting part the same grey as the gun mantle, as well as the main parts of the lascannon. Paint the tip cover of the lascannon red. The key is to use all the colors to break each other up. So while all are present, no one color is overpowering. Since your main hull is going to be predominantly black, bolt gun tracks would be a good contrast but they will really stand out so you should probably tone them down with a wash. Remember to use the light grey to highlight the details on the tank.

Oh, and a solid black dozer blade (highlighted in light grey) with a giant red COBRA logo emblazoned on it...
