I am curious in what you guys think about this situation.

The Talos “wildfire” rule presents an interesting situation as the Talos may hit more than one squad in the shooting phase. If the 6 closest models (which may be split between 2 or more squads by chance) can be shot at does the Talos get to charge either one?

I have had arguments stating that only the squad that was hit am I allowed to charge. The situation was:

2 squads were within charge range of the Talos and the closest squad was a 2 man marine squad and the next was a 5 man terminator squad. The talos’s 6 shots only hit the marines but failed to wound the marine. If all the shots had hit then 2 of the 6 would have gone to the marines and 4 of them would have hit the terminators.

When it was time to charge I wanted to charge the terminators but marine player said I had to charge the marines because I hit them in the shooting phase, I was over-ruled by a red shirt and had to charge the 2 marines.

What say you?

I'd interpret it like a Flamer. You nominate your *target* squad, and then resolve the shooting. Your shots may well stagger over into another squad, but you can only Assault the stated target.

The red shirt's reasoning was probably that since the attack only hit the marines, they were your only valid charge target, but Wildfire sounds to me like Aura of Decay and the other ranged attacks which don't specify targets. So any of the units which came under the effect should have been valid charge targets, in my opinion.

I can't think of a clear precedent at the moment, though.

Aura of Decay is different in that it has no target. The Talos Sting however stills needs a nominated target to begin it's shots from.

Ergo, whichever unit you first roll to hit against, regardless of how many more you arc the shots over to, is the unit you can assault.

Hopping on the pain wagon

I would think either unit using We Are Legion as precendent.

The description in the codex says explicitly to roll to hit for the six shots and then assign the hits starting with the closest model and then moving outward whether or not those models are in the same unit. At no point in this process is the Talos's controlling player designating a target unit.
