WhenI typed "Mattock" I actually meant "Mallet" ... two tools where if you swap them around you are sure to notice.

I see now, not paid much attention to the kit after decided they were not really my cup of tea.

Nice and colourful gribbles.

Thanks Big'. Yarp, to both. Poxies below...

Thanks Graven', Gits',

Thanks MT, Yeah, I have a few uses in mind for the rest of that playset.

Thanks OMN, Ah, the mallet is from the guy with the long coat.

and Thanks Tom.

Poxies are done.
As usual, I could spend hours more on them, but for small troops to sell it's not worth the time.

There's a nice mix of matt, satin and gloss finishes across the models; e.g. the biohazard suits, the black commissar coat, and a few boots are finished in satin. And, of course, the pus dribbles are finished in gloss.

Anyone who wears a lab coat worth their salt will have brown stains on the rear where they wipe their hands.
I also had a stain in the middle of my chest where I'd wipe my spatulas off, but that's more of a personal touch so didn't add it here.

That's another 20 miniatures done. Should certainly bring up this year's average.

In other news, I've started the base for the statue piece.
I didn't want the neat edges that a set of CDs would give me... so I broke up the CDs and arranged the pieces with no neat edges outward.
Then covered it in tissue / PVA.

Rough position of the statue pieces (there will be more), and the plinth will be in the suspiciously square corner at the right.

More soon...ish.

In the mean time, pop over to the LoER terrain contest thread and get involved:

Lo Private', and welcome. Thanks, nice to hear.
Yeah, a dot of superglue on a foot will hold them enough for painting and is easily snapped off when it's time to base them.

Thanks York'.
I can't say. It starts with a seed of an idea and I just explore where that takes me. Once I've started a model it grows by itself; I don't plan the whole model. The size and shape of the things I use dictate where they go and what way around they should be.

Thanks MT. More added to the base below.

Thanks Gits', Lamby and Graven'.
The tentacle colours came from the 2 that were going to be the largest, until one was cut down (as it was too similar to the other). The cut down one became a DoTT reference in green, and the other one had to be purple.
I used those two colours to make the rest of them unique by alternating the colour of identical tentacles (but not all... not on purpose either) and ran with the punk look for the lot of them; they wouldn't look out of place in Necromunda.

Plinth added.
Made from a basic foamcore box and covered with card tiles to look like bricks. Will get a going over with plaster to bring them all together and add some more texture.

Statue pieces in rough position... the "plan" is to build some barricades about the fallen statue and make it a very story-driven piece. Small but with lots of details (hence making the base first, I'm limited to this size). There may be a companion piece with another statue, but we'll see about that later.

The statue pieces will get added detail sculpted on, like boots and clothing, but will keep the heroic bare chest for this one. Maybe a cape... laurel wreath...

I've also got another small project to get built soon, but need to do some research for that first. Stay tuned.

Somewhere between the 2?! It is based on the Governator after all.

But I'll probably try and make it more Emp'ror like.

Got the main pieces on to the base now. I'm seeing the upper body digging into the ground a little, and so I've built up some ground about it.
I'm going to fix the hand there and make a removable flag (for ease of storage etc.) to be held by it.
You'll also see I "plastered" the plinth too.

Not that you can make out much detail amongst the WHITE...

I can now work on sculpting the clothing details on these... Bring fourth the milliput...

And as you can see it in the background there, the other project is underway.
At what stage can you tell what it's going to be?

Now he's standing I can work on giving him arms.

Gold star for MT.

The back of the "head" was filled in with a piece of foamboard (to support the top piece) and 2 lumps of tissue/PVA (I don't want him becoming too top heavy), covered with a layer of plaster, and then finally the smooth layer of milliput.

The body has been bulked up with 4 layers of card (alternating the join at the back and front) and finished with a layer of plasticard and the edges with more milliput.

You can see I boo-booed with the position of the central square-ish hole in the plasticard layer. Easily fixed with some more glued on and milliput to finish.

Let this cure and then maybe I'll finish the legs before starting the arms...

Thanks Fango. It's a present, on request. So just for display.

Thanks MT. I have plans for the dome, but we'll have to see how that turns out as to whether it gets included.
I tried to find a suitable clear dome in my junk collection, but didn't find anything. So it'll need making or leaving off...
Initially, I was thinking of making the top solid and painting on the internal details, but that will only work from one angle.
Plan is to make a former from miliiput (as it can take high temperatures), and melt some plastic (or, as a last resort, hot glue) over it with a blowtorch (a la Camkierhi).

Arms on...
Used my last bendy straw to do the extended arm, and used a piece of wire (might have been a paperclip in a past life) to attach the hand to the shoulder and hot-glued the straw over it to keep it in place.

Hands are carved from sprue, of course.

Ok, Dr H. do you do any resin casting at home? if so, you can buy clear resin...you could make a mold from the narrow 'top' end of a plastic easter egg, and cast it in clear resin...or even locate a transparent easter egg, but that might be harder to find, or prohibitively expensive to procure just for this project....at least with the resin casting route, the investment in materials goes towards whatever else you want to make molds and castings for.

I did wonder if you might be thinking of leaving the dome off...it's not an easy shape to source via usual routes.

I'm wondering if there isn't a cheap, garish beauty product out there- a face powder or perfume or something like that which sells for $5 a gallon that mightn't have a clear cap that would be somewhat dome shaped? I occasionally accompany the wife-unit through the cosmetics aisle loking for treasures at Walmart and such places (hairnets make great camo netting). ???

Fango wrote:Ok, Dr H. do you do any resin casting at home? if so, you can buy clear resin...
I do, and even sell some of my casts.
I did think about it, and I have at least one other project that could use clear resin for, but it's quite a bit of money and quite a lot of stuff to acquire (volume-wise) for one little thing and a lot of time and effort (he says after all the time and effort put in to the mess below) to make moulds.
Maybe, one day, when I do have a reason to get hold of some clear resin I can get the Robot back and make him a clear dome.

Thanks MT. Yeah, I hoped to find something to use as the dome first and then I could build the rest of him to match it.

Thank M_C. I have quite a stock of ex-beauty product pieces, but none matched close enough, clear or otherwise. It's a surprisingly specific shape.
(I do have a huge stock of various netting sizes though)

Thanks Theo'. Does involve buying things though, I'd like to make use of the junk I already have, without spending on increasing it.

Thanks Gits'.

I now present to you my experiments with a blowtorch... and I still have most of the hair on my hand...
I tried numerous pieces of clear plastic that I had (in my box of "clear things") and you can see the results of a couple of hours below:

At the top left you can see the shape I've made from milliput (over foil, it's not solid), and a mess of melted, burnt, discoloured, and hole-y plastic scrap.

It's a very complex shape to try and stretch or bend the plastic around, and if I didn't burn or discolour it in the process, the thin molten plastic often tore open.

I also tried my hot-glue idea. It showed promise...
I spread the glue over the dome and roughly smoothed it over with the tip of the gun, and then waved the blowtorch over it to melt it all into a smooth dome, which looked perfect on the mould...
But I couldn't remove it without damage, and the finished piece really isn't solid enough for a final dome.
Interesting for if you want to cover something with a layer of smooth clear-ness, so long as it can take the heat required. You're just not removing it intact afterwards.

Therefore, the plan now is to use the dome I created as a mould, as the dome.
I'll paint it up as a reflective surface (NMM stylee) and leave it removable so you can see the internals.
I can then use this as the master for when I do acquire some clear resin in the future. I can perfect it's shape as well, rather than the guess I've made with it so far.

Other progress with the robot is around the back.
It needed a "frill" of fins about the "neck", and rather than make hundreds of little plastic fins and sticking them together, I set about making a lump of putty that I could saw the lines into.
This meant it needed to be separate from the robot...

So, I placed cling film (which failed in performing to half it's name, and didn't "cling") over the robot and placed the putty over that, in place.
Once cured, it was removed and I could saw the lines into that and then glue it back on to the model.

I added a little GS to the milliput to make it stronger for handling... I still broke a bit of it and had to glue that back together before sawing.

Now to finalise the shape of the solid dome so that it sits in place, and then it's little details.

You might try those clear plastic disposable cups from kids parties , place it over your mold and very gently warm it with a hot air gun, I think the blow torch is too hot and will discolour the plastic.
Plastic cups shrink like crazy and will slump onto your former quite well if done steady enough, I made replacement cockpit glass like this once.
