The eight man squad is a relic from the 3rd edition codex when you could field 8 man units. It is no longer legal.

You need 10. The old trick was/ is to cut up a Shuriken Catapult to make a pistol.
I use Lizardmen spear tips as knives. If you had bits you could use Dire Avenger weapons. It comes with that statue thing, you can cut a sword off of that. Or maybe your buddies have some. In theory every 40k gaming group is supposed to have access to a bunch of fantasy guys they can get spare close combat weapons from.

It's like how hotdogs are sold in packs of 8 while hot dog buns are sold in packs of 8. No matter what, you're fethed.
Unless, of course, you buy more. MORE IS THE ANSWER.

The swords are cool, though. I have 14 (including two weapons) that I bought with converted weapons. The weapons sucked so I gave them the knives. I might pick up the box set at some point. I can use the fancy heads for Dire Avengers or something.

Isn't it 10 and 8? I don't eat hotdogs so I'm not terribly familiar.

I know it's a bum deal when the models in package won't make a unit, but give GW a little break on this one. I sell score counters and model kits, and the amount of work to repackage, shoot new photos, rework all the advertising and paperwork, and get ten models from sprues of four is difficult, to say the least. Storm guardians were probably not a huge seller, along with guardians, until 5th edition made troops critical, after all. With the enormous product line GW sells, I'm just happy they manage to keep most of it available to buy.
Looking at what you get for $30.00 is a better deal than $35.00 plastic guardians as well. A lot of pewter components with 2 special weapons and some stylin' heads as well as the arms. You just gotta buy 3 boxes to field two squads.

If you use Dire Avengers. Take the sword and Pistol from the package and use a guardian body, you have your 9th guy. One more Dire Avenger and you have 10th.
If you look on ebay some places sell the bits only yet so you could finish off the squad.
The second box ( and two more avengers) would finish off the second squad and give you 2 flamers and 2 fusion guns between your two squads.
