I like that, I am trying to use up as much as I can as part of my build so there is less to move over.

Are there any maps that work with 1.18 akin to the Dakkamap?

This is what I'm doing since I didn't have much. I never got around to figuring out what I really wanted to do. I did build out the nether hub at the Jungle spawn (which nobody visited ) as well as construct two awesome tunnels to my village area, one in real world and the other in the Nether (which also had no visitors). I took screenshots so I can always rebuild that stuff.

Still, the stuff I made is nothing like the things Ralphy built. Man, I just realized how dependent I've become on his gold farm. Guess setting up one of those kelp XP farms is going to be a priority.

Nothing firm yet, but hopefully this week. However, what I will probably do is keep the current server running on 1.17.1 and launch the new 1.18 alongside it. So people who are still packing their possesions can choose when they want to move.

You probably also don't want to be carrying your entire possessions into the new uncharted server and then bump into a creeper or three. So you might want to find a dirt hole in that perfect scenic spot and then request the inventory transfer.

Also this may help later when moving builds is an option, you can log in to the old server to confirm the location, boundaries etc or just refresh your memory of what you had.

This would be a godsend for me.

I gotta get my mate who was basing with me when we were actively on Minecraft to log in and save his stuff. I'll happily go across first, find a space then pull my inventory if that's an option. Starting to actually get excited for minecraft again, which is an alien concept.

How does a kelp XP farm work? I have an automated kelp farm so I have more kelp than I know what to do with.

I assume it's the kind of farm where you feed them into a series of furnaces, so that when the furnaces eventually get full, you can get the XP from the furnaces.

I found a video that used smokers rather than furnaces, ill have to modify my farm to include them. Normally i get exp from the wall of smelters I use for stone.

We're nearly there.

I plan to launch the new Minecraft 1.18.1 server this weekend, possibly today.

As previously mentioned, I will keep the old Minecraft 1.17.1 world running alongside this one for now. This will allow more time for those who need it to prepare for their move. Later it will also help with migration of any builds. You can use the "installations" tab functionality in the Minecraft Launcher to switch between Minecraft versions.

There will be a new server url to continue to access the 1.17.1 server and the current address (mc.dakkadakka.com or mc.darkinnit.com) will login to the new 1.18.1 server. I will post again about this once it is in place.

I have not had the time to pre-generate any large sections of the world, so any large amount of exploring is likely to cause some lag as the world is generated. Please take this into consideration at your own risk.

Spawn will also be a little rudimentary to begin with, players are welcome to extend and improve it!

And now you've got me wondering if you chose a seed where spawn is a single block in the middle of a huge ocean.

Thanks again for all of your efforts.

Ha ha, no here's what spawn looks like so far and how much of the world is generated...

https://www.darkinnit.com/dakkamap2021

Also in getting this map generated, I managed to fix the odd shadows issue with the current map (yeah just in time for the world change). The map is currently generating so there are still some of the shadows around the edges, but much of the central areas are already fixed.

Thanks for all your hard work on this one as ever, Darkinnit!

Think I'm almost done with inventory grabbing; another hour or so of running about should do it.

The map shows how easy it'll be to get around half my important builds over to the new server, as the border round Chasmholm / Beanstalk etc. is basically a big rectangle from when you transferred that region over in the last world reboot.

The Dakka Minecraft Server now has a brand new world started for 1.18.1!

I have kept the current server running on 1.17.1 and launched a new 1.18.1 server alongside it. So people who have not yet prepared or are still packing their possesions can choose when they want to move and do not need to rush to prepare.

You can still access the old 1.17.1 world by launching Minecraft 1.17.1 and adding a server of old.darkinnit.com

So in summary:

1.18.1 - mc.dakkadakka.com or mc.darkinnit.com (both are the same)
1.17.1 - old.darkinnit.com

You can see maps of the two worlds here:

1.17.1
1.18.1

I'll be happy to transfer player inventories over once per player (Ender chest inventory and Advancements would also be transferred). So if you want to pack up your entire estate into shulker boxes and move, or if you want to start completely from scratch, that's up to you. When you want your inventor transferred, send me a PM an when I have a moment I will do it (this won't be immediate and may not even be the same day).

You probably don't want to be carrying your entire possessions into the new uncharted server and then bump into a creeper or three. So you might want to find a dirt hole in that perfect scenic spot and then request the inventory transfer.

After your inventory is transferred, you can still login to the 1.17.1 world if you want to revisit it, but your inventory will have been cleared (no cheating duping items ) and you will start as spawn as if a new player.

Having the two worlds running will help later when moving builds is an option, you can log in to the old server to confirm the location, boundaries etc or just refresh your memory of what you had.

If you want to be able to switch between Minecraft versions:

  • In the launcher, click the 'Installations' tab at the top

  • Click 'New Installation'

  • Name the installation, something like 'old' or '1.17'

  • Change the version to 'release 1.17.1'

  • Click 'Create'

  • Click back onto the 'Play' tab at the top

  • In the bottom left corner, choose which version you want to play

  • Click Play

  • To help with the server move, on the old 1.17.1 world at spawn, the villager Giles is selling shulker boxes for a low low price of 6 emeralds (or 6 ghast tears):

In the 1.18.1 world, Giles is not as generous, so take advantage of this while you can.

I have not had the time to pre-generate any large sections of the world, so any large amount of exploring is likely to cause some lag as the world is generated. Please take this into consideration at your own risk.

Spawn will also be a little rudimentary to begin with, players are welcome to extend and improve it!

    Thanks again, Darkinnit!

After some extensive exploration (I think I got as far as 2300 blocks from spawn), I finally found somewhere I can call home. Not quite the mega 1.18 mountain I was looking for, but it's got some height to it, and it's an island. It's still over 1000 blocks from spawn, though.
    How's everyone else doing?

Okay, I logged it and took a look around. Spawn is pretty dangerous right now. Do NOT port in with your shulkers. Creepers run right up there and chase you.

As Dark said, log in, find a safe space and then do your character transfer.

The spawn is in a sizeable Badlands biome. Things could be interesting as we try to rebuild stuff we left behind on the old server. I've tentatively decided to build my home in a spot about 100 - 200 squares away from spawn.

To the East is a vast desert biome, maybe more than one connected. I remember Ralphy being worried about running out of sand. I think that won't be a problem here.

To the West is a large ocean and a Pillager tower so please don't go messing there and come back with that Raid debuff.

There are some Forest/Savanna biomes to the North, but I didn't explore them to any great degree. I also didn't see any of the new mountain terrain near the spawn.

There are many ravines cutting through all biomes so be careful while you run, or you could have a sudden drop into a dark cavern.

Think I'll log in tonight and head north for a couple thousand blocks to find a bay similar to where my 1.17 city is and hope it can be moved there later.

I got gifted a village a few seconds after I logged on (thank you uh BloodRose was it?). I am going to fortify it as a first task, to keep the villagers safe, but people are welcome to use it as a place to sleep if needed -- it's at, I think something like -400, -200. So, definitely reachable from Spawn.

So after going ~ 3300 blocks north, I can report that it's a lot of plains/forests/some mountains that way. There is a jungle a few hundred-ish blocks to the NNE that I really didn't explore. Haven't seen any shipwrecks oddly enough. Currently holed up in a plains village, where I am treated as a curiosity, at best.

Hey, cool, Darkinnit's map has been updated to show more of the world that we've explored. Looking at it, I think I might be responsible for a decent chunk of from when I was trying to find my new base last night.
I can definitely confirm that the savannah biome by spawn felt like it took forever to get through on my way north. I didn't go quite as far as north as Gitkikka. When I hit the ocean at around 2000 blocks north, I built a boat and started going west and south west, eventually looping all the way around to 1500 blocks south of spawn, and ending up east of spawn at my island home at 1950 x -450. My island doesn't look that big on the map, but it feels big running around on it. And I've got room to grow on and around. Thinking I'll build a great big castle palace on it, with maybe a supporting village on the short of the big lake it's in.

The cool part while exploring was that this was the first time I ever encountered ruined nether portals in the game, and I saw two of them. One was in the swamp NW of spawn, and the other isn't far from my new home.

Despite all of my sailing around, I only found the one shipwreck, and only because it was the kind that was mostly intact with the masts sticking above the water. Found the treasure from the map, though.

Also, I found a spider spawner almost right next to spawn. I was coming up from the little dock near spawn, and heard some lava bubbling. Dug around a bit to find a small lava pool, and a spider spawner attached to it. As you're climbing up from the dock, it's to the left, and I build a cobblestone entrance to it to make it easy to spot.

I like to explore and go adventuring. I really overshot my mark, though because I got in a "What's over THIS hill?" mindset and didn't realize how far I went until I got to the village. Also, I'm holding onto hope that I'll be able to bring my city over, and I don't want to come in conflict with someone else's area.

Tannhauser42, do you have a link to the updated map? It's not updating for me, even when I flush my cache.

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. I didn't flush EVERYthing, apparently.

I've got an idea for the nether hub design. It's the fancy pattern that I made for the hub out by the jungle spawn. Glass walls at the edge so you can see out and enjoy the scenery. I've PM'd Darkinnit so we'll see if he can port it over of if I have to build it from scratch.

One thing to note is the biome we're building in has a shader and particle effects that will make it appear a bit dimmer than what you may be used to.

Unless someone beats me to it, my project for tonight will be to turn that spider spawner at spawn into a farm, so we can have an XP farm up and running. The string and spider eyes will be a bonus.

Spider XP farm is complete. It's not the prettiest thing, but it gets the job done for now. Be careful if you're mining the terracotta on the surface near it to make space for another build, as some of it forms the roof of the farm.

I thought the acacia and deepslate looked kind of merry!

And there is even a lake and a boat they can play on.

I was kind of hoping to go for a more medieval walled village vibe but was persuaded by other players that you gotta defend against drowned too. :(

lol. I'm just teasing because of the way it looks on the mini-map.

But there are also Pillagers that wander around looking for trouble so protecting your village is a good idea.
