I am trying to get a better sense of how to be more successfull with an Ogre Army.

I thought by having units with 5 models in the unit I would have a better chance of charging my opponent without having to make a break test prior to getting into combat.

But the impression I am getting is that having Multiple Small Units (MSU) is more siccessful as then my opponent cannot shoot enough units to halt a charge from coming.

So I am wondering what people believe is the more successful way of running an Ogre Kibngdom Army.

Please respond to the Poll and if you can shed a little light on why you choose one way over the other in response that would be appreciated.

If I was to make Ogre Kingdoms, I'd run lots of small units.

Precisely for the reason you noted--Ogres are big targets, easily tossed with combined fire.

Make them many big targets, and it's really not that big a deal.

A more optimum list would IMO also include Gnoblars units, 2 or 3. Mostly for rank support in a combat.

They get beat up easily, but if your ogres can't win the combat...you're going to get hosed by combat res the turn after the charge.

Ogres are a neat concept, but TBH they fail as an army because the fall into the monster category.

Slower than armored cavalry, so they can't charge them and instead get charged.

Faster than blocks of troops, so they can charge...but still can't generate enough damage to overcome combat res.

If you add in characters, what happens when the other guy adds in his? They cancel each other out, and you still lose.

That and horrible armor makes for a bad list.

They haven't been abandoned by most competitive players for nothing, they have serious issues all over the place.

stelek you have something against every fantasy list so unless you come up with something constructive rather than just bitching about what you don't like.

anyway i know many comp players and they usally take a "deathstar" unit that involves characters and ironguts while using small units of bulls as combat fodder so his other big unit goes and obliterates whats left and they can't shoot and both "deathstar" units

i take larger units despite the vast majority of ogre players who push for MSU lists. i tend to run my tyrant with maneaters, and at 3k i run the slaughtermaster in the same unit.

my usual 2k list includes:

tyrant

5 bulls, command, butcher
5 bulls, command, butcher

4 gutz, standard, bellower

2 belchers, bellower
2 beclhers, bellower

3 rhinox riders, full command, warbanner

stick the tyrant with the gutz. at 2250 i add in the maneaters for the tyrant and flesh out the butchers more.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

The reason you have to take multiple small units with Ogres isn't so they won't die to a shooting list. You are going to loose to shooting lists anyway even with MSU. Mostly because now the opposing player can just concentrate on destroying one unit at a time and making you take leadership tests with your crappy ld.

The reason Ogres have to use multiple small units is so they can use their mobility to set up favorable charges to overcome static res. Not only that, but taking large blocks of Ogres is a huge waste of points because you are paying way too much for just an extra rank when you could be having double the attacks if you split the unit into smaller units.

I mean, I guess they are a terrible list if you just go forward and charge their units straight on...I don't know why you would do that though....

They're difficult to play with but once you start to get the hang of msu movement you'll start to win games. They are not a tier 1 tournament army like two treeman we's or daemons.
