Subject: BFG custom ships...

I don't really know why, but I've gotten interested in BFG. I've never seen a game played and there's nobody in the area that plays afaik. Despite that, I've been looking at the models, have checked out the forum here at DakkaDakka for BFG and decided to do some custom DE ships. Yeah, there's only two official DE ships and that's fine, I just really don't like the looks of the produced ones. So in trying to come up with something that looks more DE'ish. My only major concern is the scale of existing ships in BFG as compared w/ my two constructs...

The cruiser, as can be seen is about 2 1/2 inches long, while the escort is roughly half that.
There's still some gaps to fill in on the cruiser between the main sections but I have ideas on what to do there already. It's sorta funny, as I've perused the forums, I've seen ships using some of the same pieces that people have created on their own.

If anything you're going to be a little small for "standard" cruisers. an imperial Lunar hull is 3 1/2 inches long (less the prow ram/nova cannon), and a chaos cruiser hull is about 4 inches long. 2 1/2 is, I think, more light cruiser size.

I love BFG, my favorite game hands down!
That said I think those models will be perfectly fine for DE ships. The Imperial and Chaos ships are basically very narrow and long, and about the size of a 40K jetbike. So long as they look relatively comparable in size to other BFG ships of the same class. That said, Eldar and DE ships are much more compact than their Imperial counterparts.
There is one major rule of thumb though I would say you definitely want to follow. Because the game does need to be somewhat WYSIWYG, this means that classes of ships should look the same. Having a very different model for every cruiser/ escort and each one being something totally random tends to irritate people. So make/choose a basic design for like one class of cruiser, and a different one for another class, but don't make every model of a cruiser in the same class look different. Very minor details could vary, but the main hull configuration needs to be the same.

Thanks for the input everyone and good to know some of the basic sizes of other ships; It's hard to judge size from pictures alone.
I've got alot more on the back end of the crusier done today. I'm trying to use green stuff only to be the connecting tissue between parts while using actual bits to work out things like details.
I should be able to make about 5 of the escorts while the cruiser will be the only one of it's kind given my limit on bits atm. I would definately do more of them in the future. Will post more pics as it goes.

Updating the pics on the WIP here. I realized I also need to make specific 'gear' for the ships that will be consistent as well.
The Escort is just about finished, maybe a few touch-ups but the chassis is definately solid. The DE head I used for the back end of the ship I flipped over from the first pics as it flows better overall w/ the shape of the ship. The battery guns I added center of the ship is actually one of my favorite parts (since I skewered my thumb w/ my pin vise to make it ).

I'm still plugging along w/ the Cruiser, the majority of the work now is centered on the empty space between the front and back ends. Overall I'm liking the look of this thing, whether I get to play or not is inconsequential.

my brother and I always wanted to make a huge campaign thats based on some random planet. and it all starts with BFG and depending on how the battle ends that tells us basically what we have to start with on the planet. and then kindda do a DOW type campaign where as we take over spots on the map we get stuff for it.
ANYWAYS...... those look pretty awesome. ive never seen a BFG mini and never knew they were that small. kindda makes me think about scratch building some lol

I'm surprised at the small amount of, what I thought were useless, bits these have taken.
