Not a bad article... and the end product isn't too shabby, either.

I'm wondering, though, how sturdy that thing would be if you removed the front wall.

One of the nice things about the painting station is the lack of impediments to the surface. If you have a mess, you can sweep it right off of the front of the tray into a trash can. Not so much, with your creation.
Also, due to it's lack of walls, the hobby tray has the groove around the edge to catch bits that might, otherwise, roll off into the floor.

Nice work.

Ah.
Forgive me. Maybe I overlooked something.

Did he not post the article? Was it you who posted it, Malf?

Yeah, his blog shut down and I've been reposting some of his stuff here (he gives clear permission
on his blog). I admire his work and would like to preserve it.

This looks like a pretty nice makeshift alternative to the GW paint station or other craft stations I've seen in hobby stores. Great way to protect your surface and keep things organized. I might recommend adding non-slip "feet" to it to keep it from sliding on smooth surfaces.

In the shoe box I carry almost everywhere, I can fit about 30+ paint pots, brushes, plastic well palette, folded paper towels, an xacto knife set, sculpting/modelling tools, and a small dental case (hard plastic, snap-close, foam padded) holding up to 20 models. It's sturdy, uncluttered and I can leave the modelling tools at home in favor of a paperback. Anywhere I go I have an instant paint station, although I mainly use it to keep the table at home from becoming cluttered and to paint models at work. Yes, I said paint models at work - one of the few joys of my workplace is the freedom to entertain yourself when it's not busy.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Pretty cool...except there is no where to put your paints...a plastic divider thing that can be found in tackleboxes might work. Other than that it's awesome, and a note on the GW one: It must have cost like 5-10$ to make and there selling it for 40$...

The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on.

This was exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
Would the space on either side be sufficient to hold a few paints or do you think i should improvise on that?

BT uses the Codex Astartes as toilet paper. They’re an Imp Fist successor, recruit from multiple planets, and are known to be the largest Chapter in the galaxy. They’re on a constant Crusade, keeping it real for the Emperor and not bumming around like the other guys. They hate psykers and can’t ally with them. They’re basically an entire chapter of Chaplains. CC lunatics. What every Space Marine should aspire to be, if not trapped in a Matt Ward nightmare
