At the 'Ardboyz game in round 3 I could see an Orks vs. Ravenwing game.
The Ravenwing player won the roll to choose sides, and put his bikes up on the line. The Ork player kept his whole army in reserve. The Ravenwing player then scouted forward and prepared to move up and line the back of the table on his first turn, thereby winning the game without a roll on turn one? Seems odd.
Now, in the actual game, the Ork Seized the Initiative and tabled the Ravenwing, but if he hadn't, can you keep the enemy off the board by lining their board edge?

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

depends on the mission if it was a night fight, i could see this 'happening' possibly, alot of other factors would come in.
but if they had infiltrators, you would also have to line the short ends of the board, so that a model could not get through the gap.
thats my short answer.

Huh?
Deployment has rules where you can't deploy within 12-18" of an opponents unit, but deployment does not equal coming in from reserves!
Lets say I don't deploy any units and keep all my units in reserve, I also don't call out any special reserves rules (Scout, Infiltrate or Deep Strike) so that means all my units will be coming in from my boards edge.
Break down:
-Turn 1, no reserves (or of Dawn of War, all my troops could arrive on)
-Turn 2, I then roll for reserves. They units would then just come in from my boards edge and the only limit would be the typical have to stay 1" away from my opponents units so to effectively block them coming on the table you'd have to cover all 48" of the map, which I don't think is possible.
If it was dawn of war deployment, same thing I can drive on right next to my opponents as long as I'm 1" away from their units.

Nearly had something like this happen in my first game, with Spearhead deployment. Yes, if you are able to completely block the opponent's table edge so that there isn't a 1" gap between any of your models, then he cannot move on the board from that edge with infantry models. Jump-infantry can get over, vehicles can tank-shock through, deep-strikers can deep-strike, and outflankers can come on from the side, but regular infantry are lost if they cannot deploy when they arrive from reserves.

Yes, any jump troops, vehicles, Deep Strikers would just laugh at the perfect line of targets.

Ravenwing cannot turbo boost in their scout move. It specifically says so in the Dark Angels codex. DA Codex, pg 27:
"Scouts: Note that no model may make a Turbo Boost move whilst using the Scouts Special Rule."

They don't have to turbo boost. If they get the first turn, and the ork army is in reserve, they can scout forward, then in their first turn turbo forward and block the orks from coming on without firing a shot.
Yes, there are units that would not care about this, but walking orks would be stuck.

Shouldn't the orcs be bringing a death roller anyway? Anyone have a tank for tank shock?
Seriously, the only thing that a line of troops on your board edge is going to stop is an army of only troops which was held completely in reserve. Assuming that you managed to place a perfect line of 24 or so bikes along the 6' board edge to put the game rules into a contradiction:
1. Can't move within 1" of an enemy model.
2. Have to move the reserves in as they become available.
The rules don't say ANYTHING about what to do if that isn't possible. You may as well argue that the enemy forces should be allowed to assault onto the table, or congratulate your opponent for the marvelous display and start the game over.

But there are enough precedents about what happens to a unit that cannot come onto the table for us to make a call.
What happens if you're using a DE portal and the guy carrying it dies before deploying? They're dead.
What happens to Necron Warriors using their special Reserve rule to come in by a Monolith if all 'Liths are destroyed before the Warriors come in? They're dead.
What happens to a unit in a completely surrounded transport that gets destroyed and they cannot get out? They're dead.
Following that line of reasoning, what happens to unit in Reserve that is unable to enter the table........?? I say they're dad. BTW, this is the same answer GW always gave me regarding a picket fence to stop Space Puppy scouts from coming in behind you.

Tanks could tank shock off the board edge when moving in from reserves. Not sure what orc vehicles count as tanks? If you are able to make a gap, or rout the enemy, then your troops could come behind.

You only need 18 bikes to cover a table edge, if they are turned sideways. That isn't very many.
On tank shocking - the only things it helps are units that are actually transported - if you tankshock, and the unit passes its test, it moves back to where it was before the tank went through so the wall would reform - and kill all units that came out of reserve but had nowhere to go.
A very situational tactic, but would be obliterating if it did apply.

I typed out a silly response the first time, because I didn't realize that there was a minimum speed for the tank shock, but that just means that you'd have to tank shock onto the board at an angle so that the tank was on the board and in the way at the end. Although, a six inch movement straight onto the board even for a rhino would leave a bike within 1" wouldn't it?
What sort of orc player doesn't have a deathroller for this situation, anyway?

I've already done it a couple times with the side of the board using my IG. Spearhead deployment vs 'Nids who were using lots of Outflanking 'stealers. Both opponents started everything else in their board quarter with only their Outflank units in Reserve. I used my Infiltrators to block off the short side that was part of my board quarter. Worked quite well, even against the one that tried to break the picket fence with spore mines and lictors. Anything he did get on had a long trek to get anywhere useful, while his units that started on the board faced pretty much the full firepower of my army. Starting lined along the short edge actually improved LOS while still leaving them in range to provide mutual support.
So while it is of limited usefulness, it can come in handy.
