Yo,
I recently started playing fantasy, but my friends have decided it'd be great to be able to play both Fantasy and 40K. Even if the armies are relatively small for now. So, to save money, I threw 30 in for Assault on Black Reach with a friend. I decided to pick up Space Marines, I remember seeing Space Wolves a few years back, when I wasn't playing and liked the idea.. however, after picking SM I've come to find out that SW are a dead horse with its dying offspring sprawled out just a few yards away. Which kinda sucks.

I decided to stick with the marines though, for now. I really want their color scheme to be that of SW, even if they aren't going to be SW. Really like the blueish grey/yellow/wolf paw decals.

Well, I grabbed some more paints and a primer. Generally, I use black gesso.. mainly due to the fact that when I was spray priming some goblins I kind of killed some details. The gesso, though it might take longer, has yet to obscure detail.. till well, now, sort of. I picked up some white gesso, after doing some research that with a SW color scheme it'd be better to use a white primer over black. I can only assume that the gesso doesn't do as well with the SW because they aren't as "frail" and are much more bulky than my undead units.

So my first SW marine ended up with a thick and sticky coat.. and my painting was way off. But, I expected to mess up a bit, the stickyness really killed it for me. So tomorrow I'm going to pick up some paint stripping tools. (Which is a bit confusing, so many people vouch for different 'strippers' or warn about others.) SM isn't the initial army I wanted, kind of torn between Eldar, Tyranids, and Tau. But, Tau seem really one dimensional with just blasting stuff up. I like the Kroot though. Regardless, before I start collecting my preferred 40K army I want to be fairly seasoned with painting.

Pic's'll be uploaded after I get a SW painted to a better standard than tonight's burn and crash attempt, lol.

San Diego.

"sticky coat"? what type of paint are you using and how long did you let the gesso dry before painting?

Vallejo/Citadel.

Liquitex White Gesso, probably about an hour or so. I did two models, though, and I let one set over night and it still had the same "sticky" feeling. It felt like rubber and the paint didn't adhere to it that well, which surprised me. The first model I was conservative about slathering it in gesso, so it was a light coat and the other I blobbed it on. I didn't expect the first one to turn out so bad and to my dismay the Gesso didn't 'shrink' on the second one. So details were obscured and the hunt to find some type of paint stripper at the local Home Depot began.

My friend and I busted in there looking for the goods, I had quite a few "strippers" in mind. He, however, thought it'd be a good idea to ask someone there for one. I figured why not and the guy we ended up talking to played table top as well.. and seemed knowledgeable. I was trying to stray away from something pack full of carcinogenics, but he was adamant about the product. Assured me that it wouldn't damage plastic, he had used it himself. Well, it definitely didn't not melt it. -.-

Well,
My other friend decides he'll take my SM's off my shoulders. Then I was torn between the choice of Tyranids and Tau, leaving the upcoming conflict to Luck/Chance/Dice Gods I rolled 1D6 and stated clearly that 1 = Tau and 6 = Tyranids. Rolled a 1, but was uneasy about Tau's capability to handle itself in close quarters. So I rolled a 1, 1, and another 1. Not being one to incur the wrath of Chance I grabbed some Tau to head home with.

Truth is I want to collect both armies, but have heard Tau are quite one dimensional.

Flabbergasted, my day has passed me by. Still camera-less. Fabricated a mini-work station out of tissue boxes though, haha -- it will do for now ;p. If anyone has an alternative to priming via spraying(or a good brand excluding GW's), besides gesso (or maybe I just really did a terrible job on priming, but never had a problem with it before on smaller models), or advice I'd appreciate it.

Hopefully I can get a hold of a camera soon.
