Hey guys, i was wondering if i could get some advice on how to go about starting a VC army. I had played Tomb Kings for a while but realized that they were getting kinda weak and lacking their usual luster. So I already have 3 vampires (2 foot 1 mounted), 3 necromancers (2 foot 1 mounted), 2 Wight kings (1 foot 1 mounted), lots of skeletons from my TK and a boat load of zombies, 9 black knights, 5 wraiths+ 1 banshee, and finnaly 5 blood knights. All of this and numerous TK things that i could possibly use to convert more guys as well. I have a few ideas floating about the army but was wondering how to make the best of what I have. Any feedback would be great as my 1st opponent is going to be a Dark Elf player who has just started his army as well.

In my experience playing against VC its best to make one hammer unit or so... say a Vamp Lord doing the Dread Lance + Red Fury combo in a unit of knights with a BSB Vamp and the regen banner-

Then the rest of your army is undead, and vamps/necros to Invo your ghoul/zombie units until your hammer unit can flank charge across the board to break/run down their target.

A unit of Cairn Wraiths for WM hunting isn't a bad idea either.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Thanks for the advise on that. I now have a nice sizable unit of black knights but realized that its better for a wight king to travel with them. But also the idea of a sick BSB is a great touch, regenerating grave guard would be a great hammer unit or my newly converted blood knights. There are just so many different combination that can be done it's awesome to play an army where you cant decide how to run it. I was also starting to look into the corpse cart for its great spell and anti magic abilities. I have found the wraiths and banshee to be a great unit..if it can shoot an enemy and THEN charge them down. What are peoples opinion of the Blood Knights? Are they worth the cost? And if so...were would you put them in an army?

So far this is my list to go against my buddies Dark Elves: (forgive my spelling)

Lord Sangaer Vampire Lord-sword of might, flayed armor, helm of command, talisman of protect, walking dead, infinite hatred, red thirst
Slim Necromancer-scroll and septre noriot (raise dead)
Hunchy Necromancer-book of arkhan (dance macabre)
Captian Bones wight king-mounted, barding, shield, scroll and sword of kings
2x20 skele warriors with full command
2x26 zombie w/ SB and musician
11 grave guard w/ full command and +1 hit banner (whats a better banner, re-roll to hit or +1 to hit?)
9 black knights w/ full command and screaming banner
3 wraiths and 1 banshee
5 blood knights w/ full command and war banner, champ has +1 attack sword

Any ideas on how this list might do? All comments welcome although try to limit adding things to the list from my existing collection if possible.

Bottom line Blood Knights are generally rubbish. Frenzied cavalry are God awful if your opponent knows what he's doing.

Hello Blood Knights this is a fanatic, please charge it.

oh you're still here, here's another fanatic please charge that.

while you're doing that, allow me to maneuvre a unit of random goblins to flank charge you next turn, 3 ranks, outnumber, banner, flank... goodbye.

noy got fanatics? throw something crap at them, skaven slaves, dire wolves, warhounds. whatever your cheapest crappest thing is, use them to drag the blood knights into the middle of your army but too far forward to have anything to charge the following turn. Flank them and watch them die to combat res.

Thanks for that, i looked at them again today and would only really consider playing them in a bigger game and realized that they can be controlled real easily by my opponent. What do you guys think about the 4 special characters? Are they any good or must haves?

Vlad-Good all around
Manfred (lord and hero)-spell casters
Konrad-combat
Isabella-support?

Disgaree. Blood Knights are amazing. Three attacks at S5 when being charged? Put a vamp in there and they will own almost any unit in the game, frenzied or not.

blood knights are amazing, but need to be kept under control.
use a small units of dire wolves infront of them so they cant run off.

i used to play a khorne mortal army, and used hounds as handlers for knights to stop this
works very well, costs pretty much nothing, and keeps an expensive unit from getting dragged the wrong way.

when you are ready to charge simply move the hounds out of the way.

from what i have found when playing against VC is that fell bats are very annoying, allways getting in the way, blocking march moves and generally picking on smaller units, it might be worth taking a small unit of them for use against any war machines or lone wizards.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Ok, i can convert some of my carrion vultures into fell bats and will work on the hounds.

On another note, why has the black coach changed so much? Instead of wounds it uses "power pool dice", WTF does that mean? Ues the 2 dice every army gets and wizards in 6", thats a bit of a downgrade since lastime. Although its easier to get the new abilities you need to roll 6's, kinda low chance considering that your only going to get so many tries.

Thoughts on the (nerf) Coach?

the coach is great if you are willing to have acromancer dispel necromancer. if you take a necromancer on a corpse cart with balefire and staff of socery (-1 to your casting roll and +1 to my dispel roll yes please!) you use to pointless poer dice the necromancer generates to pump up the coach. 4 special character are way over the top considering that take is easily 1000pts+

No i was actually just saying what people thought of the 4 characters and if they were worth bringing in a game. Also can anyone critique the above list?

I have played with each of the special characters and found them interesting, but ultimately ineffective distractions. The bottom line is they are not worth their points for their abilites. You are better off with stock characters. I know it sucks but its the truth.

Hey I'm new to both fantasy and VC but I'll give you my Impressions of the list for what little it's worth:

I think you could use more grave guard in the unit since they tend to attract attention. maybe by getting rid of some zombies. Which is my next concern. I really only see zombies as useful for redirecting charges and taking away ranks. Then again I've never tried using them in those kinds of numbers.

Anyway that's just my 2 cents take it with a grain of salt. Good luck.

My armies:
, , , and a little and now VC

So i have played a few more games and realized that i may now want to start running my vampire on a mount as he eats through units the way he is now but is limited by his mobility. I was thinking about doing the Black knight hammer and have the regenerating unit eater. Has anyone found any real problems with the black knight block besides having too many eggs in one basket. Expect a VC vs. DE battle rep in the future.
