Hey yawl. It's Jeremy here, sculptor and part owner of Ultraforge. I am designing a gang of medieval warriors who worship the demon Beezlebub, the lord of the flies. I did up some rough concept art and I am curious which ones you like and which you don't. I will then go on to re-draw the top rated designs into more refined and clean pieces of art.

The best 10 designs will be sculpted into 28mm scale heads. I will then go on to design the bodies, weapons, etc. Your input allows me to think about changes before it is too late, and I appreciate all of your thoughtful critisism. Please feel free to expand upon which designs you prefer, and which you dislike as well. Thanks for your help.

The entire 3rd row.

But what you really need to do is sculpt all these heads and sell them as bitz!

The first row of heads are nice, but a bit of variety could be cool. Instead of all skinned faces, maybe some odd ones like a skinned forearm with the hand as a crest/mohawk or a skinned head with the ear as an eyehole.

Second row is pretty cool as well, though the upper spike helmet 2 also makes me want to see another out of the box one. The 3/4 view could be cool translated into a weird asymmetrical helmet. Basically think of the 3/4 as a head on view with the visor canted off to one side. While I like the helmets, they seem a bit top-heavy and unbalanced. I like how the lower part/gorget of the gladiator helmet looks. Perhaps adding gorgets/chainmail/leather collars might be worth looking into? That being said, I really like the gladiator, articulated, and fly helmets.

Row 3, like the facemask, maggotmouth, but the half-helms aren't really doing it for me. Perhaps going back towards the dead skin masks, and doing armor nailed to the head/face?

Aaand row 4... Face stitched together, nice; though I think it is kinda odd that he has two eyes, but no other facial features. Bandages, cool (maybe missing jaw, but keep the tongue?). Skin missing, super-sweet. Old mask seems a bit out of place for medieval warriors, and even as a futuristic head it seems a bit lacking, but that might just be me. Stitched Together 2 is pretty cool as well, though I kinda want to see stitches around the mouth as well.

All in all, they look pretty sweet. I also think that in addition to fleshing (ha ha) them out into full figures, having them available as head sprues would be super-cool.

And since they worship the lord of the flies, a pig skin mask would be a nice literary reference as well as looking pretty sick.

I think this could be a lot stronger with some modification to the right eye socket.
Perhaps some angled definition of the skin being pulled more tightly between the cheekbone and brow.
As is the curve looks a little artificial.

These are AWESOME!

Alright, here's my thoughts:

Row 1:
I like the idea of skin masks, but it may be difficult to make it obviously skin rather than just a piece of cloth.
'Skinwearer' looks like he's wearing a drab balaclava and isn't particularly 'horror'.
'Skin Mask' is great as the stitching adds more to the texture of the head.

Row 2:
Lovely. I'm not sure that the 'Fly-Head Helmet' works, despite the obvious link to beelzebub. Perhaps a reworking that involves more of a hint towards flies than a direct representation?

Row 3:
The first three are superb, especially 'Maggotmouth'. 'Upper Helmet 2' doesn't look animated enough. The fly-helmet one has the same problems as above.

Row 4:
All good, but the 'old mask' one needs something else to bring out the nastiness, otherwise it looks like someone who simply doesn't like the sanitation conditions!
'Skin Missing' and 'Stitched Together 2' are superb!

Great work and we all look forward to seeing them when they're done!

Not only should you do these heads as bitz packs but should look at some other themes for heads or bitz as well. I think there'd be a serious market for such a product (and could garner good money for low resin cost I would imagine).

As far as the topic, I'd prefer 10 of a similar style (any of the 4 rows would be fine to me) but my favs are:

1.1
1.3
2.1
2.2
2.4
3.1
3.2
3.3
4.3
4.4

Row 2 absolutely. Then row 3.

I'd buy a pack of row 2 heads (or four or five packs), if you made them that is.

My Favorites:

1.2 Skin-Wearer
1.3 Skin Mask
2.2 Articulated Helmet
2.5 Upper Spike Helmet 2
3.1 Spike Facemask
3.2 Maggotmouth
3.4 Upper Helmet 2
4.2 Bandages
4.3 Skin Missing
4.5 Stitched Together 2

The fly masks might look too stylized for regular troops. They would probably look cooler on leaders or priests.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Jeremy,

I think when you're dealing with a corrupt/distorted visage, I often think that the less you show, the better it is as it leaves room for the user's imagination to come up with what horrible things actually lie under the mask.

Of course you still need to put little details into the design to hint at the corruption that would be found beneath the mask, but actually keeping the bulk of the face covered up makes the idea of what lies beneath all the more exciting.

With that in mind I think both rows 2&3 are the more powerful in that they don't expose much of the face and they also work in a cohesive looking design element (the iron mask) that just looks 'cool'.

I especially do like the 'maggot-mouth' look, although I would prefer if it was incorporated into one of the masked designs instead of showing off the whole face.

No matter what, I love the concept and can't wait to see the finished models.

If I could pick & choose, I'd buy 5 - 10 of each head at reasonable prices.
If I had to buy "by row," I'd buy rows 3 & 4, if I was getting 1 of each.
If it was a miscellaneous mix of heads... I wouldn't buy any (too many that I don't like to risk getting stuck with a bunch of 'em).

Nice look, so far, overall. Very Nurg... err... Beelzebub-ish.
