Hey all,

Playing with a friend today, it was I think his first game of fantasy, first of mine in probably eight years. Well, some chaos knights charged some dryads. It specifically says in the Dryad rules (or in the rules for a rule the dryads have...ugh.) that magic weapons negate their save. Right.

So now the knights are fighting wardancers with a 6+ save. I swear recalling that magic weapons ignore ward saves, like how flaming attacks ignore regen. We couldnt find it in the book though.

In short:
Do magic weapons negate ward saves, and if so which page is that on. If not, why the heck do they negate it vs wood elf ward saves but not all others?

Thanks!!

Magic weapons do not negate all ward saves. They do Negate Woodland spirits +5 ward saves as per the WE army book on p.18
How ever you can give your Branchwraith a stone of crystal Mere or any other Item that confers a Ward save and it will not be ignored by magic items (unless it specifies otherwise).

Ward saves on non-woodland spirits are not effected by magic Items unless it states otherwise (Amaranthine Brooch)

This and/or the Magic weapon states that it ignore Ward Saves. Can't think of any that do currently, but doesn't mean that won't change in the future.

Oh okay, thanks for the help. I dont know why I was recalling they did, and then on top of that he tells me his dryad saves are nulled by my magic weapons, which made it worse.

Thanks alot!

By default, a Ward save is sort of like an Invulnerable save in 40k. It represents special protection which is not reduced or negated by almost anything.

Items which ignore Ward saves in general are very few and far between. The Lizardman Blade of Realities is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. I think there are a few magic spells out there which cause wounds that allow “no saves of any kind.”

Certain specific Ward saves, OTOH, have special exceptions. Some magic items, for example, grant conditional Ward saves- only against shooting, or only against magical attacks, or only against non-magical attacks, for example.

It used to be a special rule of Daemonic saves that they were negated by any magical attack or weapon. This was extended to Forest Spirits in the Wood Elf book, thus creating a link and implication that they are daemonic, in keeping with the dark nature of the Warhammer background. Of course, this cool cosmological link was trashed when the new Daemons of Chaos army book came out and gave the whole army regular Ward saves which work fine against magic.

Actually, Storm of Chaos first introduced that with Belakors Army.

The Storm of Chaos Daemonic Legion army list did have regular ward saves, but they fluff-justified it as being because the appearance of a DL army represented a major chaos incursion into the world. A special circumstance in which the daemons had more power and durability, in CONTRAST to the way daemons were more commonly seen, where they are more vulnerable to magic. Thus it wasn’t until Warhammer Armies: Daemons of Chaos came out, and the daemons in Hordes of Chaos were invalidated, that we lost the interesting thematic link between daemons and forest spirits.
