Following on from Osbad's thread, rather than derail it, I wanted to see what gets other gamers ready for a new army.

For me, there is a single moment of inspiration. Either from an idea I've been considering suddenly crashing to the fore, or from something as simple as a single line of text.

For instance, reading the old Dogs of War book the other night, I now feel the need to collect a Dogs of War army. Not tourny legal, and slightly shonky rules I know, but I don't let that bother me. Why? It's the motto of Volands Venators that makes me want to run an army of these guys 'Last One To Die Is a Sissy'

I really cannot say quite why that has inspired me so much, but it has. Increasingly, I find it's odd things like that which send me down the route of collecting a new army. Having been gaming for several years now, and with lots of armies behind me, I am largely immune to 'new army syndrome' and the other tactics used be GW to lever yet more cash from my wallett. And yet, they must be something right, as once the decision is made, I try not to worry about the price. Example? Dropping £86 last night to finish off my Savage Orc army. At 2,000 points, all of it metal, this has not been a cheap exercise. But I love the army, and my opponents fear it as unlike many Orc armies, it comes into it's own late in the game, and never worries about Panic tests.

So what gets you spending on a new army then?

For me the process tends to work like this:

1. See something cool (could be a model, paint-job, artwork, article...whatever).
2. Get codex/army book for said new army.
3. Spend 2-3 weeks feverishly working out army lists.
4. Price up my favourite list.
5. Get discouraged.
6. Look at all the stuff that's still stuck on my painting table.
7. Get even more discouraged.
8. Look at my bank statement and realise I can't justify starting that new army, no matter how cool.
9. Give up (promising myself that as soon as my existing armies/projects are all finished I willtreat myself to something new).

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

For me.. generally... it is getting a HELL of a deal on a couple figs. Boom.

On a local free item weblist my wife belongs to, someone was getting rid of some "Sci Fi" metal toys.. the wife put in a request knowing she married a gamer.. and went out and picked up (for free, remember), a bag of metal figs. When she gave em to me, there were Ral Partha, Grenadier, old GW and a LOT of the OOP Eldar first runs..

Gee.. now I feel the need to make an Eldar Army..

@Porkus, your wife rox! Go, you!

Typically, I'm model / concept driven. I'll see something that looks cool, and buy an army around it.

I've gotten much better lately, but still have quite the backlog I'm working through.

I have to like the miniatures, the playstyle, and it has to be different to my other armies.
Currently the only army I would really consider is greatcoat gaurd if they release plastics.
