Okay, this has been bugging me for a while, and i would like to know what what you guys say, would the citizens of the Imperium have cars? Seems to me that if there are roads in cities, there should be some cars on them, but i wouldn't call myself an expert on the fluff of the Imperium, so i wanna see what you guys say.

I suppose so. GW never explained the average Imperial citizen's life. Do they have TV? Hair salons? Supermarkets?
We may never know.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I'm pretty sure the cannon is that each world is vastly different from each other.
To the point that cars would be outdated in some and as far in the "future" as a plasma rifle to cave men would be.
I mean really, the city Ambulon on Scibtilla in the Calixis Sector (Dark Heresy) walks
The original fluff (Rogue Trader) Mag-tube style frictionless surfaces are use as transit.... but so are horses
anything goes, depending on the planet and the community

Why would anyone need a car? All anyone ever does in The Dark Future of the 41st Millenium is suffer, suffocate, die, and get killed by xenos or the big =I= for no reason. Why drive when you're sitting in the comfort of your living room drowning in five feet of putrid mud and dying from a vitamin D deficiency because you never get any sunlight in your apartment which is unbelievably tiny and rotten but also huge and full of Gothic stonework mixed with rusty pipes at the same time because everything in the 41st millennium is?

Like Cheese Elemental said, the everyday life of an Imperial citizen has never been written up.
Since the planets have different tech levels some of them must have cars. I expect the cars would be STC so there would only be a few different models.

wow.... mozilla, learn it....love it.
anywho I know if there WERE cars in the furture and i was there... i wouldnt want one. simply because everything in the future gets blowd up real good. so instead of making a car payment on the scrap pile that was once my geo metro..... ill just take the city transit. on a side note i love how they have baneblades and defilers and sentinals and rhinos, teleporters DROP PODS! and the like, yet the average citizen has to ride in a hay wagon? talk about stupid

I've been working on and off on this for a while. My current project is this:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/219120.page
An armored car from early in Nazi Germany's remilitarization effort. It's obscure enough not to look like a modern vehicle and oversized enough to pass as a 40k civilian vehicle.
I also like the Battlefield Evolution Hummers and Plasticville cars (thought they'll need a TON of work to look right).
The only civilian vehicles I've ever seen are from the original genestealer cult

If I remember correctly for the Gaunt's Ghost stories, they mention there being a car that Gaunt traveled around in on the planet where the he saw the spirit of the old nun or whoever she was - I think it was the trench warfare book.

I'm sure it varies by world. Planet A has horses, planet B hover cars. planet C monorails and planet D cars.
I figure there's 2 kinds of tech in the Imperium, homegrown and STC. Homegrown stuff is optimal for that world but on other worlds you may not have fuel, parts, it may not even work in that environment. STC stuff works anywhere.
So there probably are STC car, truck, bus and limo designs but we've not seen them yet.

The old Rogue Trader book (why did I throw that away?! I'd love to go back and read it now) had rules for cars and a picture of a scratch built model.
I imagine they're kicking about somewhere, but give me a Land Raider anyday...

There are cars, on some worlds at least. I read Dan Abnett's "Brothers of the Snake" (or something along those lines...) and on one of the worlds there were las-lock guns and sevritors that pulled carriages. Another planet had hive cities with many road vehicles including lemosine-esque cars for nobles and transit buses for commoners. Other books have suggested that cars are very real and often used in the 40k realm, it just depends on the given planet.

There are very likely trucks. I seem to recall Arbites fluff referring to armoured 'basic' vehicles, with very little detail... I would assume that they're all boxy and rubbish-looking, though. No more stylised than an old Kombi with a bad panel job. At least as far as civilians go.
The only thing that citizens of the Imperium have for certain is responsibility.
