Weakness can be removed. As we ply the stars we will carve it like a cancer from the flesh of the Imperium. The heretic and the traitor are weak of mind and of faith. Their life is ours to extinguish. To allow them respite is to invite their weakness to spread, to fail is unthinkable. Purge the Weak.

Welcome to the home thread of the Sons of Medusa Clan Mageara's Fifth Battle Group. This project started out as an army for the Bell of Lost Souls Badab War campaign book and what would have ultimately been a full blown campaign at what was then Battleforge Games in Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, I ended up moving away prior to the campaign getting off the ground, but I was able to get some of the army featured in the actual campaign book that Bell of Lost Souls put together. In the end, I was left with what would end up being one of the most complete and developed army I'd ever worked on, and something truly special that constantly keeps me interested. A legacy project.

In the following pages, you can find the slow but sure development of the entire force. They are full of work in progress images, ideas, and finalized models. There are also links embedded within many that will redirect to my website, The Painting Corps. Many of the links will take you to a more elaborate breakdown on the techniques involved, the recipes for various parts of the models, and just a touch more insight into what else went into the model. Digging through the entirety of this thread should give you a better understanding as to just how I've gone about everything for the army, and really how long it has taken me to get the army built how I have wanted it.

I hope you enjoy the thread as much as I have enjoyed sharing the process with you all. It's always a privilege to have people read what I have to say, and I appreciate every view. Thank you for taking the time out of your day, night, morning to see what I've been up to!

WIP of A Son of Medusa:

My first model for my Badab War Campaign army, the Sons of Medusa.

I really need to get a new white primer, the one I have is pretty much garbage.

Now, if I could find Scorpion Green in a spray can.....

Looks good so far! Don't forget the red eyes. I played Sons of Medusa in 3rd edition. Never ran into someone else who did. Eventually sold the army. How many points do you have planned?

And here I was thinking of doing a small SoM force myself. Now they're sure to pale in comparison.

I look forward to seeing this progress.

Ok this is taking a little bit....But the results so far are worth it ^_^.

Grundel - I'm actually considering doing yellow eyes ^_-. As for points, we'll see. I'm just going to get this first 500 or so painted and go from there!

SoG - I would love to see your take on the Sons! We can swap notes.

Well I made some more progress. It's very slow going x.x...but hopefully I learned a few things here and there so far to make it go a bit smoother next time around.

Here is where we stand at the end of the night:

enmitee, I used Thraka Green for the armor and painted back up to scorpion green.

Looking pretty good. Whats most important to me, is that its easily recognizable as something other than a Salamander. The bright green really turned out nicely. Some of the details on the bolter (i.e. the eagle) seem to be getting lost, but Im assuming thats due to the white primer?

Since its a test model, I suppose youll keep the base the way it is, more elaborate bases would be cool tho.

PS: The yellow eyes work! Id continue with those!

awesome grey!! I wanted to do SoM but you beat me to it! I'm liking the green. I guess I'll stick with the idea of doing "the purge". green also but I like em cause they sound like an 80's punk band haha!

I like the base color. Rim it in black and you have a very nice frame for a green figure.

Looking very nice, Grey! Very attractive scheme, and you've pulled it off well. I'd like to see how you're going to do battle damage for this army, if at all. Badab War being what it was, seeing some damage on these guys would be nice, I think.

Hey all, Thanks for the replies!

Flach, The bolter is definitely losing some detail from the primer unfortunately. It's still got some work to be done though, so we might get some back with detail work ^_^. As for elaborate basing, maybe for the commander, but the rank and file guys aren't going to get much in the way of crazy basing. I'll save my super basing stuff for my 'Munda gang.

LBursley, SoM could use more allies! It's funny how many folks were considering this army at the same time.

Iffy, you read my mind on the black rim. I was looking at it this morning and came to that conclusion as well.

Grim, I am planning some battle damage. I think I'll be going with a dark green for the chipping and damage, hopefully it comes out alright! It'll be the first time I've done any damage in that manner.

Ah, dont get me wrong. The brown base is a great choice for the green fig, but it seemed rather bland. A stone here or there... some thicker gravel etc.
Im not talking monster bases will all kinds of stuff on them

Now that you guys mentioned it, a black rim would look awesome.

A deep boltgun/gunmetal color for the bolter might work out very nicely too, as it would be a dark yet different color from the trim and help set it off.

@ Flachzange - yes, I recognize that is what you meant.

I heard from higher-up why they were originally called the Sons of Medusa, mainly that the Studio thought the scheme was so -ing ugly.

Your take on it has put the lie to that statement, though. Well done.

I would leave the bolter black. different and clean. me likes. Also glad you went with the yellow eyes.. goes with the green.

I keep imagining awesome it would look if his helm was glossy... just the helm though.

Thanks of all of the comments folks ^_^ I really appreciate all of the feedback.

I spent some time at work yesterday finishing up the first model. He's still not 100% finished, he needs a chapter badge still (I'll be using printed decals for that), and I'm not 100% finished with the weathering just yet. But it gives you a much clearer image of what I'm going to be doing with them. Anyways enough talk, on with the pic!

Nicely done. I like the base, even though it's fairly plain. It's nice and neat and the color frames the figure nicely.

Yes, the base came out really nice. Especially with the black rim, better than I thought.

The battle damage is looking superb as well.
ALl the chosen colors go very well together and Id really like to see a bigger force of these guys.

Aquila, I do have some plans to do some additional work on the eyes. I just want to stay away from the normal red everyone uses, so I've got to rework how I go about them some ^_^. I think some shading as well as a nice highlight is definitely in order still.

It looks good, if somewhat off balanced colourwise, I think. The one black shoulder pad is kind of distracting. I think if it was left green, and maybe a white tactical marking, it would look better. The painting itself is amazing, that's just my one qualm.

Another thing you could consider for the eye lenses is just to put down some gloss varnish over them.

Well, the problem is that red is a complimentary color to Green. Yellow isn't. Now, if you blended into or through orange with a red angle, perhaps it would "pop" out more. you could even go with a purple color too. with your green armor being more into the yellow spectrum, the best color for the eyes would be a violet/red or purple with a slant to red..

If you aren't following me, I am speaking of a color wheel. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=color+wheel&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=4&ct=title notice the colors opposite the greens. especially the yellow/green.. it's red/violet.

the following link gives a good understanding of how to use a colorwheel. http://www.curbly.com/DIY-Maven/posts/690-Color-Wheel-Romance

also, feel free to use the internet to research color wheel and see what you come up with..

Very good job on your first marine! So what else can we be expecting in your army? Perhaps you could add bits and bites to make them look as if they are fighting in the Badab War? So add helmets of dead Astral Claws to the bases and such!

I remember that during the Badab War (ancient fluff) the Chapters involved also had variations on their existing scheme such as camo. Perhaps you could create a Scout Squad in desert colours or something?

Hey all! Thanks a Ton for the comments.

Some replies:

Malika, I'm sort of just putting together whatever spare kit I have laying about for these guys. I'm trying to put together something I can play (see: game legal) but with a few extra things here and there like a Desert Support Squad which was their special unit from the Warhammer World Campaign Rules. That Desert Support Squad will be done up in the Desert Camo for sure though ^_-. The local shop owner has the 40k Compendium from RT at the store for easy reference material too!

T_H_T, I never really worry much about the color wheel when I'm painting. Much of the time I'm going by feel more than I am from a technical standpoint. It was never the 'pop' that was giving me problems, just that they seemed far too flat ^_^. However I have given the eyes more consideration and I'm most likely going to do my normal marine eyes with more a fade to yellow instead of orange.

Shaman, Thanks for the compliment, I really hope to get the insignia situation worked out in the near future. But until then, I've got plenty of work to do ^_-.

Proximity, I am indeed using the foam sponge. It's working like a charm!

Belphegor, I'll probably go with a red base to yellow/white, but thanks for the suggestion!

Iffy, I've never been huge on gloss, in fact, I've never even used them x.x...I am sure some day I'll make the leap of faith and have a go though.

SoG, I sort of enjoy the asymmetry of the colors. The only real reason I did that though is because the squad marking is molded to the rim of the shoulder pad!

Red is not a complimentary colour to green, thus its place on the direct opposite side of the colour wheel.

Many GW figures use this to great effect when wanting to offset a colour, as it naturally jars the senses.

However, I'm assuming Grey is aiming to stick to a limited pallete, as the best painters do. Therefore yellow works well with green, being a by-product of two of the three primary colours.
