So this army has been my project over the last two years. Embarrassing I know, but between school and work finishing this army has fallen somewhat to the wayside.

On the bright side, with school nearly finished I will finally be able to put in the time and finish these guys off. So without further ado, here's what I've got going on so far.

Interrogator Chaplain Mordecai

Mordecai is the one and only fully finished model in the army. Not so sure about the basing scheme, I think it may be a little bland. The dead Dark Angel on his base didn't turn out too well in the pictures, but he looks pretty cool in person. Unfortunately Mordecai rarely gets used anymore, as I've switched over to using the new C:SM and don't have room for a termi-armoured chaplain anymore. He will get some use in my planned deathwing army though

Company Champion

This is another model I'm super proud of that rarely gets use. He pioneered the red as the secondary colour though. The red now symbolizes their comrades who fell during the rending of Caliban, and those who have died at the hands of their persecutors since. VERITAS IMMORTALIS! THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL!

Flamethrower

Now a heavy flamer for my sternguard vets (for the time being)

Plasma Gunner

Father Hizra'il

Originally intended as a Chapter Master, Hizra'il has become a librarian instead. I'm not sure whether he's going to keep his combi-melta or get a bolt pistol instead and pass the melta on to somebody else. I tried a different style for the power/force weapon that I think worked out better than on the company champion. What do you guys think?

Sternguard vets

3 combimeltas that go in my sternguard vets. May soon be joined by a few combi-flamers.

Tactical Marines

These are my completed templates for rank and file marines.

Plasma gunner #2

After seeing someone do one of these on the forums I decided I had to make one for myself

Vet Sergeant

This guy leads my sternguard vets. His shoulderpads are made from modified black templars shoulder pads, and he's decked out with (perhaps a bit too many) bits from the DA sprue.

last pic of sternguard sergeant

My Assault on Blackreach dreadnought. I really like how the base turned out. The chains on the right of the banner stuck out a bit too far though, and I've done some modifications to them since taking this pic

Some closeups of the base

Dread number two.

He's a little boring though, so I'm considering adding some trophy spikes along the top. Below are some of the heads I have available, which are bits from the armies of the guys I usually play against in my gaming group

An experimental "counts as drop pod" portal that my army was going to use. I figured that my marines are remnants of the caliban loyalists who resisted the Lion, and were saved from the perils of the warp by the shields of the outbuilding they were holed up in during the fighting. Thus the focus on librarians, who keep the warp powers at bay from within their makeshift fortress, and tear open portals to the real world to launch attacks. Unfortunately, the portals are too small and have been decided to confer too much of an advantage (?) to me by fitting into ruins and such when they scatter. Means I'll have to scrap all this work and spend two hundred bucks on drop pods for my entire army though...lol ugh

more pictures to come, including my converted blackreach captain / sergeant, and some other work in progress marines

Sculped "army of two" style head that I copied off a buddy of mine's IG veterans. It's going to be severed and mounted in a spike/base somewhere within the army. He's super proud of the job he did on them, so i thought it would be kind of funny to put a replica on a model as a trophy <evil grin>

Black reach squad sergeant. His head has been drilled out and replaced with a helmet (i HATE barehead marines). His chainsword army has been scrapped in favour of another bolter arm. I'm up to my neck in special weapons models, but running low on bolter marines . This is what happens when you get overzealous modelling guys in cool poses.

Some pictures of the custom base I sculpted for my commander. I was a huge fan of the brickwork i did on the dreads base, so I was doing something similar for that. I also thought the standard pose was too static, so i decided to dynamicize it up a bit and have him stepping up onto a crumbling wall

And the commander himself. The GS crest came out pretty well, and overall i'm proud of the result. I successfully personalized what I originally thought would be an unpersonalizable model. It's a shame the bolter is so boring though, I would have preferred a combi-bolter in the very least.

Some pictures of him on his base. He's going to have to be pinned, and I haven't put any sand on there yet, but he looks pretty badass if you ask me

So I'm having some problems deciding what I should do with my drop pods. The Fallen have been stuck in the warp for 10,000 years...so any armoury they might have had from Caliban would be vastly depleted, if they had it at all. This leaves me with two options to work the vehicles etc into fluff:
Option 1) Explain why they have so much equipment (ie drop pods)
Option 2) Explain how they deepstrike without using drop pods (ie portals)

Here's the two explanations I've thought up so far

For both options, the fallen angels were defending a besieged outbuilding of the Rock during the last moments of the battle. Fighting tooth and nail against their former comrades, the distant din of orbital bombardment crescendoed into a deafening roar as the very earth beneath them began to rend apart. It was then that Luther struck the final, mortal blow against the Heretic, and the very fabric of time and space tore apart. Those outside the impregnable shields of the Rock were lost to the warp, while those inside were battered by the implosion of their homeworld but were otherwise unharmed.
Unlike the Rock, the outbuilding where many of the last beleaguered defenders were holed up was sucked entirely into the warp. Where before they had fought the followers of the Lion, now they defended their fortress from the twisted entities of the warp, a battle they would have surely lost had it not been for the heroic efforts of their librarians.

For thousands of years these men battled against the incursions of daemons and malign spirits that occasionally breached the boundaries of their sanctuaries, and hardening their resolve...and their hatred for the followers of the Lion.

This is where the two paths diverge. The first option has the fortress finally exiting the warp...and right into the middle of an Imperial Cruiser! Upon emerging they found that the vessel had belonged to some lost chapter of the Astartes, whose mummified bodies lay scattered throughout the ship amongst those of the crew. Only the servitors seemed to have escaped whatever nefarious ill befell of the men on this vessel, eerily stepping around the bodies of their former masters as they carried out their tasks. From this vessel, they who now call themselves the Fallen have set out on their unswerving crusade of vengeance against their comrades that betrayed them, and the Emperor that abandoned them.

Option two leaves the fortress within the warp. Be it through desperation or the strange twisting nature of the warp itself, many of the defenders developed latent psychic abilities that aided them in their fight against the constant daemonic incursions. Their powers each grew, until finally the inner circle (made up of the strongest and wisest amongst their numbers) were able to call upon their peers to perform a ritual that tore open a portal to the real world. With this new ability, the Fallen have been able to resupply, expanding their fortress and butressing the defences against the warp. Using their psychic power to guide their fortress through the warp, the Fallen have begun to execute their campaign of vengeance against the heretics who cast them out and destroyed their homeworld.

TL;DR option 1: exit warp into a ship that they commandeer
option 2: remain in the warp and tear openings in the fabric of reality that they raid out through

now option 1 seems easiest. It allows things like orbital bombardments, drop pods, and is just all around easier to manage

However easier isn't cooler. Despite the inevitable fluff-canon discrepancies ("<whine> the warp doesn't work that way!") I think option two holds countless more fluff opportunities. I truly love my drop pod theme, but feel that all the fancy equipment doesn't really suit the "Pariah" theme of my army. Thus portals would be a super cool stand-in for drop pods fluff-wise, and would allow some awesome modelling opportunities.

How I'm thinking it will work is this. The commander will always be a psyker, be it a true librarian or a fudge (ie librarian with a storm shield, termie armour, and a template psychic power who "counts as" Vulkan Hes'tan). He opens portals that will be assaulted through by first dreadnoughts, then he and his men, while reserves wait on the other side, and assault themselves through whichever portal is near the heaviest fighting. The portals are represented by drop pods, and the reinforcements arrive by deepstriking onto locator beacons. The librarian can also step back into the warp with he and his unit, and re-emerge through a different portal (Gate of Infinity again homing in on locator beacons).

I'm probably going to have my termies count as grey knights, partially for the cool factor and partially to their being veterans of millenia fighting daemons. GK terminators can arrive via deepstrike, as can power-armoured GK using teleport attack (or whatever), and can all represent shock troops. My only problem with them is that they're expensive, and I'm not sure how they'll perform yet.

Tasks:
1) decide on option 1 or 2...leaning heavily to 2
2) figure out how to model these "portals," so that my gaming group no longer bitches about "what it would be like if these were real drop pods"
3) figure out how to model "counts as" nemesis force weapons that can double for regular deathwing weapons (ie lightning claws) when i use the army as deathwing (and soon to be double wing)
4) paint the rest of my army!

Needing help on 1-3, as well as any critiques on the scheme, details, or background story. I'm also willing to post more before pics, or explain any of the techniques i used if anybody wants...not that they're particularily involved or anything.

All looks great love the fluff and free hand. not sure about the blades Personally dont like the Lib's.

But all the models look good.

You could say they made there own "rock" like the Dark angels and took the ship to give it boost and the ability to move. Also that would help with there armoury cause you could say they looted it. So you could do a Old Preheresy looked mixed in with a newer look.

IMO keep up the good work like the red and black. I'm doing a Fallen army as well. This inspired me to do it now.

Love the free hand so much. how'd you do it if that is a easy answer?

Absolutely love the chaplain - the skull and creepy eyes work a treat. I'm not usually a fan of wavy line scripture on armour, but I think you've managed to pull it off quite nicely.

Nice work on the BR captain too - a distinctive look, neatly done.

I thought fallen were chaos, or are they just renegades?

and if they are chaos or renegades you couldnt use grey knights as they are unheretical!

p.s awesome painting.

The Fallen believed that it was the Lion, not them, who fell to Chaos. He made excuses to stay far away from the fighting during the Heresy, and waited patiently to see how Horus's campaign was succeeding before deciding to declare one way or the other, which led the Angels on Caliban to attack him suspecting he was an agent of Chaos. This explains why the DA are so intent on wiping the Fallen out, as they hold information that could create the downfall of the chapter.

It's also the reason I've gone with the theme of lots of script. Through fury for their persecutors, the Fallen have covered their armour with descriptions of the fall of the Dark Angels, passages describing the Fallen's crusade for truth, and oaths of vengeance honouring their brothers who have Fallen. Their red cloaks/armour bits also represent the blood of their brothers who have Fallen to the treacherous Dark Angels.

The fluff comes from the book Angel of Darkness. It's been out of print for a while, but they just brought it back. I haven't read it yet, just summaries posted on lexicanum or warhammer wiki, though i'm going to get around to it this christmas break.

The grey knights aren't going to be actual grey knights either, they're going to be veterans of the warp with millenia of experience fighting daemons that "count as" daemon hunters.

Make sure to read Angels of Darkness before you do! Looks like there's a new book coming out called "Fallen Angel" or something like that in July, I saw it on the black-library website.

The script is actually pretty easy. What you need is patience, a detail brush, and that you learn to love the taste of paint .

Lol jk on the last one. Your paint should be just watered down enough that it doesn't go on clumpy, but not as watery as you would usually use to paint. If its too watery, you will need more than one coat which will be virtually impossible at the level of detail you're trying to attain. Next sharpen your brush with your lips so that it comes to the finest possible point, then dip just the very tip into the white.

I like to start off big blocks of text with a boxed in capital letter (F's look cool, as do T's), similar to how you see in most older books. Now don't just draw a squiggly line across, instead do small punctuated strokes upwards and downwards to simulate letters like t, y, etc. It takes some practice to get a look that you like, so maybe do it on a primed piece of sprue or something first. You pretty much only get one shot when you're doing it on your models.

When you're doing larger sized text that you can actually read, you want to block out your letters first. Write it down on a piece of paper to determine how many letters you need to fit. Split the sentence into two halfs, determining which character is the absolute middle one.
So for 'THE FALLEN' there are 10 characters (including the space).
First paint on the T..........N to outline the text.
Then paint the middle letters in: T......FA......N
Then paint the middle letters between those: T..E..FA..L..N
Now you can finish it off: THE FALLEN
The letter should all be adequately centred.

Also, don't overdo it. I try to stick mainly to large blocks of open spice, like a combat shield, shoulder pads, and occasionally breast plates. Too much and it begins to overwhelm the model (though with the Chaplain that's kind of the theme they have anyways, with all the scrolls hanging off their armour). My dreads and tanks i may go a little overboard with though.

When I get some time I can post a better tutorial, if anybody would find that helpful?

Remember that Angels of Darkness was the views of ONE Fallen(and apparently your whole army), not the actual fluff for the Fallen. The actual fluff makes no mention of them believing what Gav wrote, it shows Luther slowly corrupting the Angels into worship of Chaos(knowingly, as many of them attempt to redeem themselves by aiding far flung Imperial worlds) based on the fact that they all felt spurned and forgotten because they were left as a home guard, which is why they attacked the Lion and the loyal Angels. If you're going to educate people about the Fallen, at least explain both the actual fluff story as well as the alternate story presented by Angels of Darkness. Also, if you're using Black Library books as story points, don't forget that the Chaos worshiping Fallen in Eye of Terror mentions something about how Luther showed them the way to the true universe by leading them to Chaos.

Uh huh, likely story. Did Azrael tell you that? You're just believing what they WANT you to think. When Cypher presents the Lion sword to the Emperor, the Lion will return, and we will hold him accountable for his crimes against the Emperor. Until then, the Fallen shall make the blood of the heretics run as a river, staining the ground of innumerable worlds. Our brothers slain by your unholy crusade of lies and treachery will be avenged!

On a lighter note, my finals are finished Saturday. After that, I have to finish my personal statement for lawschool aplications, then it's nothing but me and warhammer (...and work) for a long time
I spent some time last night while procrastinating on studying thinking about my army list, and I'm thinking I may include another MM/HF dread into my list. Does anyone know if you can still only do this via black reach or forgeworld? Maybe I'll just try to buy my friend's blackreach dread off him, and figure out how to convert a heavy flamer onto it... In either case, another dread means ample opportuntity for sculpting bricks, so I'll take some pictures of the WIP so people can see how i did it. I used mostly the citadel tool, as the nubby thing on the end was just the right size for spacing out the bricks.

I have another two or three swords to paint, so I can definitely take a few pictures while I'm doing it and make a tutorial. Would people prefer me to do the lightning style-one, the flame-style one, or both? It's really frusterating me that I love painting swords so much, but hate paying the points for them lol. I have like...four or five guys with power-swords and only the librarian ever gets used :(

I'm thinking of replacing the librarian with vulkan though. Three dreads, three tactical squads (all in drop pods), MM/HF on the dreads, mg/combi flamer or mg/combi melta on the tactical squads. Should make adequate use of Vulkan's ability. I'm hoping that combined with the DWMLs on the pods, all those templates will be force my MEQ friends' armies to take enough saves to whittle down their forces enough. I'm still not sure if i like the dread+vulkan or libby+counts-as-greyknights more though...

I believe the same as you. the Lion will pay.

But I LOVED your red but i wanted to try my own Idea. white for the knight aspect. I'd do scripture on shoulder pads as well.

I got one painted and will need to post it. but it is very simple the weapons are black with a old rustic look to them
But the Army is very solid the only thing I noticed is the head on the dread nought think it's outta place.

Hehe, the head does look a little silly, not sure what i'm going to do about that. My guys just have some serious anger problems

I like the colour scheme you have there. I think it was the last edition DA codex that said that the pre-heresy colour scheme was "black armour, black robes," which looks.....bland, to say the least. Adding the white scripture was necessary, but not enough; it really needs another colour to contrast the black.
