if you roll a 1 with a csm dread armed with heavybolters do you shoot six times or just twice i just wasn't sure

You fire the weapon's profile twice... so the heavy bolter fires two sets of three.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Those darned crazed Chaos Dreads ...I use two normally, had one blow the other away in a game. They also always seem to go crazed in the same round. Funny.

A friend of mine brings three.
All with extra attack arm w/flamer.
Very nasty when three come running up a flank or center.

I've been thinking of a tactic like that since the crazed assault doesn't endanger my own troops and flamers have no chance of destroying the other dread.

I was thinking of converting up a few, then I remembered of my most recent game with a friends minis. It's kind of like a joke

Three Chaos Dreads show up to a battle. One with a HB, one with a Plasma Cannon, and the other with a Multi-melta. The Plasma Cannon Dread turns to the Multi-melta dread and instead of saying anything shoots him in the face, TWICE! The multi-melta dread explodes somehow killing several CSM behind him. The CSMs also somehow fail their morale check and run away! Then the HB dread turns to the plasma cannon dread and says "You'd think they would have run after I shot half of them to death next turn!"

Then they all died.

WoW...massive insanity. I know a few people w/ CSM that refuse to use Dreads at all because of their quirky nature. I personally love the..umm..Chaos it brings. I've still got to add 'kick me' signs to the back of my Dreads. Maybe a bumper sticker: 'I brake for nothing'

warsmith pyrus:

You shoot twice, three shots the first time with re-rolls, three shots the second time with re-rolls, for six shots with the Heavy Bolters in total.

Just remember:

They can run, they can use Smoke Launcher in the turn prior to the assault so that they get a cover save of 4+ if they win the assault to lessen the effect of retaliatory fire, they don't take hits from No Retreat!, and Crazed becomes a bonus when they get close enough.

Something that you might think about is using two Dreadnoughts to escort a Land Raider full of Terminators or Berzerkers into position. Give them Autocannons, or Heavy Bolters, or a Plasma Cannon and even a Missile Launcher, and keep them close to the behemoth. They can't hurt it with fire, it blocks line of sight to them, and it can carry the assault troops it needs to carry off an assault most effectively.

A lone Dreadnought in an assault is a zero-sum game, particularly if the enemy has Power Fists or Power Klaws. A Dreadnought supporting a unit of Terminators in an assault, however, is great because it'll prevent their lose in a Sweeping Advance, contribute S10 Power Weapon attacks at I4, and look good while doing it.

I occasionally try to run them, as shown above. It's just everytime I do instead of being fun to play with and at all difficult for the enemy to deal with they usually destroy each other and half my army and my opponent just laughs and asks if I want to play another game after he blows me into oblivion.

A third of the time they are uselessly running at an enemy who is on the other side of the board while neglecting to use that expensive weapon I gave it or blasting the hell out of each other or any of my other things. I know the common come back "Deploy them right nub!" most of these situations are when I try to deploy them correctly and just end up rolling a 1 on turn 1 or a six and get "run like an idiot so you can get shot to death".

I just don't like a bad roll deciding the entire outcome of a battle so early on. I might as well have picked up all my miniatures, moved them off the table and said "So want to play some 40k? Let's set up!"

Yeah, the thing about the bad rolling is that if a Crazed! roll on the first turn decides the entire outcome of the game, the problem may not be the roll...

Excellent! I've had them do everything from killing my own Rhinos to to fleeting into a full Blood Angels Death Company to hold them up alone for 2 turns.
