I finally slapped myself across the face and got in gear to start painting. And by "start painting," I mean next weekend when my spray gun gets here. Nonetheless, I felt it apt to post some of my work so far.

First up is Captain Torrus, of the Time Phantoms 3rd Company. He is made of nothing but bits.

(yes, I know the storm bolter holes are crooked)

His head, torso, axe, melta bomb, and backpack are from an assault squad box (you get so many spare parts out of that box). His storm bolter and iron halo are from a terminator box. His legs are from a tac squad, and his shoulder pads are from a command squad.

I plan to have him painted by week's end, so bear with me.

To tide you over until then, here is some assorted fluff.

Scheme:

Primarch: Vulkan

Chapter Planet: Eternum

Chapter Symbol: A black hourglass with skull features (eye sockets, nasal passages) in each of its halves.

(screwed around with the contrast/brightness to get a more sinister look)

Battle Barge names: Memories of the Past, Lives of the Present, Portents of the Future (may revise; your thoughts?).

Mutations: Catalepsean Node. All Time Phantoms marines have photographic memories and forget very little. Though this may seem like a beneficient mutation, it actually becomes detrimental over time. As a Time Phantom ages, his accumulated memories build up and begin to affect his mental health, a condition known as the "Weight of Aeons." This can sometimes be counteracted with hypnotherapy that supresses some of the marine's memories. The Catalepsean Node is still able to regulate circadian rhythms, however.

Distinguishing Features: Similar to the Blood Ravens, the Time Phantoms value knowledge in all its forms. Each marine is a veritable scholar in his own right, well versed in strategy, engineering, and medicine. This is also why the chapter has a higher-than-normal amount of Techmarines and Apothecaries. The chapter's Librarium is well-known throughout Segmentum Tempestus. It even rivals the Omnis Arcanum of the Blood Ravens; however, unlike the ship-based Librarium of the Blood Ravens, the Time Phantoms Librarium is a place of learning and study. Many travel to Eternum for that very reason. The Librarium is not the most distinguishing feature of the Time Phantoms, though. The Sands of Time is a massive hourglass located in the center of the Librarium. It contains a small sample of sand from every world in the Imperium, and more sand is added every day as new worlds are conquered in His name. When the sand reaches the bottom of the hourglass, it is lifted to the top again by anti-grav generators located in the hourglass' supporting columns. The chapter's librarians even claim that the sand's shifting portents can predict future events.

Combat Doctrine: Multi-purpose. The chapter values all combat styles, and changes as needed.

Your thoughts/opinions?

Nice stuff mine! Really digging your fist model, and the color scheme. Though its funny that right after I decide on grey for my color scheme it pops up all over the place. :p

Anyway looking forward to seeing the painted results.

I know. I planned out my scheme and then noticed how so many people seem to use gray... Oh well, I guess I just never noticed it before.

I was really scared your chapter would be a bunch time-travelling super Space Marines that know what the future of the Imperium will be, and only they can stop it.

The fluff is really good, but two questions:

Why do they value knowledge so much? Do they often find themselves in combat situations where they need to know all kinds of things? Do they actively seek out missions where they can put all of the time and effort they spent on scholarship to good use?

Space Marines are soldiers foremost, so they should have some military reason for learning a wide array of skills instead of practicing bolter drills 18 hours a day.

Second question: Why are they descended from the Salamanders? Do they have anything in common with their parent legion?

I like the idea of the hourglass symbol. It would look very distinctive.

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

The knowledge they gain is used in combat situations. They mainly study strategy, engineering, and medicine, all of which can be used in a combat situation. Broken tank? They know how to fix it. Arm get lopped of? They know how to take care of it. An army of orks on your doorstep? They can work around it. Each marine becomes capable of operating independently and efficiently.

I chose for them to be descended from Vulkan because the Salamanders themselves are more than just grunts. Each one is a proficient blacksmith, and can take care of a lot of problems on their own. So it is with the time phantoms: they are more than just simple marines. I think of the sons of Vulkan as being those who value their skills and abilities, and exercise them to full effect.

I can see the use of those things, definitely. It does seem like those skills would be more useful in some missions than in others though. Missions where, say, operating independently for a long period of time is more important than drop podding into an enemy base and killing everyone they see.

I didn't think of that, but I can see the resemblance now.

good stuff, can't wait to see the cpatain painted.

my 2 problems are

A: i can't help but wonder where i've seen that scheme or another almost matching it before....

B: did you take the hourglass idea from prince of persia?

I collect:

Knowledge can apply to straight-forward killing, too. When you need to kill something, it helps to know where all the vital bits are.

You might have read the other topic where I posted the scheme for critique.

PoP might have had some influence. Regardless, I just like the idea of a giant hourglass.

True, but that kind of knowledge is known by all Space Marines, except for perhaps for really obscure aliens or constructs.

Since members of your chapter have such great memories, do they ever organize based on what enemies they have experience fighting?

I was thinking of having each company specialize in fighting certain enemies. The 3rd company specializes in anti-Necron tactics (so I might give them Preferred Enemy: Necrons). It ties in well with my necron character, Menaziel, but I haven't decided if I'm going to make him a rebellious necron, or just serve another C'tan (most likely the Void Dragon).

I think the idea of the Hourglass filled with the sands of conquered worlds is awesome.

However, I think that if their main priority was to keep the Hourglass from running out (Thus never having to turn it over), it would give them more of a purpose. It would also fit pretty well with their memory-induced psychosis. If they felt that the Hourglass running out would represent the end of the prosperity of the Imperium, it would kind of keep them going, perhaps moreso than other chapters.

I love the name of your battle barges.

Perhaps you could have your Veterans be Aspiring Scholars instead? Give them all assortment of tomes and such? Maybe having scouts or some such thing representing groups of scholars?

I think of the collection of sand to put in the hourglass as an attempt to represent the whole of the Imperium. If every world is in the 'glass, then they will all move in tandem with each other and the passage of time (collectiveness, unity, etc). Plus, the sand just keeps falling, representing the continuous nature of time as well as the never-ending Imperium.

All kidding aside the name/colorscheme is very original and a refreshing sight to see, and is much more important than backstory. So don't worry too much about your fluff. We play against the painted models and tactics, not against the fluff. So don't stress it!

A good way to show fluff is through your painting and conversions. For example, I had a slaanesh demon prince and a squad of 10 noise marines. I wanted something fluffy to tie them together (the noise marine band being lead by a slaanesh demon prince) but realized anyone just looking at the models wouldn't know anything about their background. So what I did is I made noise marines a band, 3 bassplayers/5 guitarplayers: sonic blasters, a drummer with huge speaker backpack: blastmaster, and the lead singer champion which had a power weapon microphone and a icon (or just acts as non-champ with icon in tournies). Then I wrote "the band" one of the banners hanging off the icon and "manager" on the armor of the slaanesh demon prince. Effectively making; fluff you can see.

I black washed everything except the white, purple, and orange parts. Does a black wash go on orange well? I tried to black wash yellow once, and...you know the rest.
