I've done this for marines, but if you like a certain sports team (football team, or even your university's colors), you can incorporate those color schemes for your orks?
I have Notre Dame marines: Dark blue armor with gold helmets and pants.
For my orks, I have different squads painted up different colors to differentiate them easier when setting up and distinguishing which mobs are in cc.

Well, since your not planing to paint your boyz up in one of the established clan schemes are you creating your own fluff?
This can help when deciding on a paint scheme, for example, maybe your boyz are on some ice world, you could go with a "snow ork " scheme. or maybe they are mercenary "free booters",you could incorperate a pirate like style to them.

My old KOS orks had a 50s greaser thing going on: white shirts and blue pants (i.e. bluejeans) with black leather boots, jackets etc.
Think about the theme of your army and see if you can't come up with a paint scheme based on that. If you're going 'generic', or just want to be able to pull different clan ideas together (lootas and kommandos, for example), try some really military colors: grays, greens, drabs, etc. Or, base it on terrain. Are they going to be cityfighting orks? dessert warriors? fighting in arctic conditions?
Also: try to find the old 2nd ed. book (or Freebooterz!) or a copy of Rogue Trader: lots of good ideas in those. Yeah, the paint can be a little bright, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good idea...

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |
