You have to think what's going to be their role in your army, give em full command and
hw/ shield if you are running a large unit to be used as anvil, flails with no command are good for smaller units used as support role

No full command if you want to be competitive. Champion cost too much for the table top value and standard is not good idea in small and fragile unit. The musician on the other hand is good addition to most fast cav units. They should not be equipped with any ranged weapons as they leave lot to be asked for in range and hitting power. The flail is a good call, as are the shield and spear, again depending on the preferred usage.
