With my Undead Ultramarine army completed, I'm now looking for a even more interesting army to convert.
I’ve always been a fan of barbaric humans in Sci-fi films such as Mad Max, Serenity and Waterworld. I’ve been thinking of doing an army based on them for some time now. The guys in the sketches are the kind of look I'm going for.
I’ve looked at different armies to portray these characteristics with such as Chaos Berserkers and Orks, Guard are out the question as I want to break away from shooty based armies and combat is big no for guard!
In the end I decided to go with Orks as they seem best suited for a barbaric civilization from a toxic industrial death world. I’ve decided to call them ‘The Kroggs’ as it sounds very suited to their background. Well here are the conversions. I'm still workin on the army's fluff to explain their brutal nature and their insane toughness, any ideas would be helpful? Also here is the Army List: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/224833.page#481203
The Krogg Boyz
The base for the conversions are the chaos marauders with a few Catachan bits thrown in, these guys have to be beefy and brutal enough to represent ork boyz. Their heads are from ‘Pig Iron’ and suit their character very well. They are 3 types of weapons that the boyz will be armed with: The first is one on the left with the massive axe weapon created using the frail arms; the second on the right is an example of boyz that will be using 1 or 2 smaller weapon using the arms from the beastmen set. Now the Slugga pistols are too heavy for these guys to hold in one hand so I plan to model them holding them like rifles using the Catachan arms with their close combat weapon on their back.
NOTE: I plan to give them all shoulder pads on both sides and brutal weapons like the one on the right rather than the weak lookin one on the left.
The Krogg Nob
For the Nobs I thought about using Orgyn or Ogre models but first I wanted to try out an armoured up version of the standard boyz by adding a few chaos berserker bits and I have to say he certainly looks the part, sadly I didn’t have a power klaw so I armed him with a large knife instead.
Now my only question is…
“Do you think they look suitable and hard enough to represent Orks?”
I though because they come from such a barren world they’re bodies would be a lot tougher than that of an ordinary human. Anyway any feedback on them would be very grateful.
The Krogg Warboss
Here are a few plans I have for other models in my army. Now the Ork Warboss is too hard to be represented by a model the size of the Nob so I though about using the Forge World Berserker Orgyn as my Warboss he certainly looks the part. Just cut of the tip of the drill and replace it with the barrel of a shoota.
I also plan to have some Ard Boyz represented by the forgeworld renegade guard with black orc sheilds.

You should look into getting some Goliath Necromunda guys in there. I was _this_ close to doing a goliath, mad max ork army myself, until I decided to make squats (imperial guard) using plastic dwarves and guard bits.
For trukks, open topped chimeras. Buggies, use the new ork trukk model and make a buggy out of it. Use only one set of the back wheels, and the roll cage, put the stubber looking gun cupola on the roll cage, or in the small rear cab. They look awesome, a friend of mine built one for his guard (as a sentinel)
I hadnt gone the whole chaos route, but I like it, it works. Looted Wagons to make Russes.. good deal. The new battlewagon kit has a certain desert trukk feel to it as well, so youre in luck there too.

The guy with the banner is good but I dont like the (mesh?) Inbetwene the joints in the legigngs. If you were able to maybe green stuff something more feral into those areas I think hed look much better.

Are you familiar with the DiggaNobs from Gorka Morka? They were very literally humans that were Ork wannabes. There are still some models of them out there, though they're pretty hard to find.

Well, like I told you before, using the Ork list isn't that much of a problem...just don't call them Orks and you're set. This is kind of the same as Migsula's T.W.A.R. which uses Tyranid rules, but they are not a horde army and definitely not organic, does this mean he can't use them like that?

What a cool concept, and really nice execution.
Some ideas for steering away from a Chaos feel would be to add some geometric warpaint in yellow or blue, and/or use Japanese/Chinese style sigils, glyphs and symbols. This would give them a distinct visual signature that would be entirely at odds with the usual chaos iconography.
A non-uniform appearance would also help – perhaps 80s punk-styled tartan trousers, jeans, slogan t-shirts and other scavenged materials to replace the military uniform feel. I'd also echo the suggestion of using Kroot details.
+++
I'd definitely recommend Mad Puppet miniatures to help expand your army. They're fantastic, and designed with a post-Apocalyptic feel.
Also, there's only one option for a Warboss – Mad Puppet's Himmlich and Bonecrusher:

I think Necromunda Goliaths and Eschers might give you more of the Feral/Mad Max look that you're looking for.

Dude. Awesome.
Great work you got there. You should build a Wartruck or something similar and see how it looks together, that might steer them away from the chaos feeling a little bit.

I made some diggas using the Catachan boxed set. It mixes well with the old Chaos plastic marauder set too, and both practically scream to be combined and turned into wacky, feral human rejects a la the Road Warrior.
To 'ork' them up some more, I'd try to track down some orky weapons: either the old 2nd ed. and Gorkamorka stuff, which will be more 'to scale', or the 3rd-5th ed. stuff. Especially the firearms, which have a much different look than the human guns in 40k.

I think they look really good, that being said i do have one little quible. The guy with the banner looks to chaosy, it's the helmet. but i think the others are great, very mad max-ish. makes me wish there were a decent set of post apocalyptic skirmish rules available.

I like what you have so far but it feels a bit lacking, I think one of the greatest things about those feral post apocalyptic societies is the nomadic feel of having people that keep all their gear with them.
I think those few test models really lack the detail that would be necessary to get the feel right. Just little extra items here or there to make them look like scavengers living off another societies technology.

If you use the FW renegades you should cover up the star symbols.
I like the idea of using the Ogryn as drugged Warboss replacement, but I don't think you should replace the drill with a gun. Are you sure you want to use that model?
Also, how do you plan to make Power Klaws?
There' sa lot potential in this concept. I'm already looking forwart to your Meks, Lootas and Cyborks
