For mystics alone, they are worth it. The guard player in our gaming group has been having some problems playing our new khorne/nurgle daemon player, and my current drop pod list.
The former deepstrikes a unit of plaguebearers in that get FNP even against battle/earthshaker cannons and are wounded by lascannons on a 6 (with a 5+invul and 4+ FNP). Needless to say, this unit has taken a few rounds of fire from a full guard army suffering a single wound each time in a couple of games, and caused the guard player some grief.
My army tends to drop pod a sternguard unit and two dreadnoughts, all with heavy flamers that absolutely eat guard. They're followed up by tacticals, whose bolters chew through whoever is left over.
Against both, a couple mystics allows heavy hitting specialist squads a free round of shooting into each unit. Deploying him near a leman russ would allow a free battle/demolisher cannon shot into each unit, or you could get a plasma-heavy command squad firing into a unit of terminators/plaguebearers, or a lascannon/meltagun squad firing into a dreadnought. Any of these would help out tremendously.
The squad really isn't that expensive, and it will quite possibly save you the game against a deepstriking army. Against lash, or other psyker armies, you gain the hood, and against other's he wasn't that big of a waste of points anyways. The real plus of the squad is the fear and doubt you'll put into that deepstriking opponent. Perhaps it will cause him to be just a little more cautious, allowing you an extra round of shooting that may tip the scales in your favour.
