Frightnening Fiend of Slaanesh

San Francisco

Hi All,
I'm seeing so much amazing work here, that I'm a bit embarrassed to be posting this initial work on The Glittering Host. But pain and pleasure are the same thing, right? Especially when it comes to constructive criticism

I picked the 40k hobby back up a couple years ago after not having played since 2nd edition. In fact, you'll see some very old Chaos Marines popping up here and there in the Host, so see if you can spot 'em all!

I'll be presenting the army with pics and fluff, and some pithy (yeah right) commentary.

The Glittering Host is all Slaanesh themed, and is at this point about half done on the CSM side and just started on the Daemons side. The core concept of the CSM army is that these Emperor's Children Space Marine squads were detailed to guard the Imperial Treasury during the Horus Heresy. These unfortunates were tempted by a Keeper of Secrets into the corrupt service of Slaanesh, and their betrayal of the Emperor crippled the economy of the Segmentum Solar for decades.

Enough of the blather... On to the pics!

“Precious”
A Keeper of Secrets covetous of all the secret shiny things in the Universe, Precious stalks the cosmos seeking to corrupt shining stars and shimmering souls to the worship of Slaanesh. The more wealth is dragged into the Warp, the greater conflict is fomented through scarcity in the Imperium. Currently devoting much energy to supporting the Daemon Prince Aurelian’s Glittering Host force in preying on the economy of the Imperium.

The bases are all themed to the Host's leftovers after battle. You see, their sonic weapons actually alter the atomic makeup of their victims, turning them to gold, silver, platinum, and precious gems, leaving a tempting wreckage behind that utterly devalues currency in the sector they invade, but even worse, inflames the greed and desires of those who encounter it, making psychic inroads for further influence by Slaanesh.

“Aurelian Avarice”

Magnus Gilt was once the High Quartermaster and Treasurer of the Emperor’s Children. The Greater Daemon Precious targeted him and his Glittering Guard due to their access to the great Treasury of the Emperor, and its subtle corruption of their minds proceeded undetected until the night of the Heresy. The Glittering Guard joined with Horus, and rebelled, fighting their way into the Imperial Treasury, singing the hideous songs of Slaanesh in their greed for gold and jewels. Triumphant in the vast vault, the great portion of the Empire’s wealth was dragged by the Host into the Warp, crippling the economy of the Empire for decades to follow. Magnus Gilt was rewarded with the mantle of a Daemon Prince that day, and now seeks out the Imperium’s riches as General Aurelian Avarice, war leader of the Glittering Host.

This Lash DP was my first attempt at a conversion, and worked out OK. First time using greenstuff, first time snipping the wings off a D&D mini, and first time using inks. As you can see, my sculpting and painting skills are pretty meh at this point, but I did learn a lot.

“Mentors of Phrigya”
“Marsyas’s Sextet”

At their Fall, these Emperor’s Children became Noise Marines, and now they play a seductive music that offers wealth as a solution to all of life’s ills. Their deadly sonic vibrations alter their victim’s very atoms to become gold, silver, platinum and gemstones, depending on the soul’s mix of innocence, greed, and ambition. Fatal, yet incredibly valuable in monetary terms, these statues are added to the Glittering Host’s trove in Slaanesh’s fell realm, or left to warp the trade of the victimized world.

Yeah, eesh. These were an initial foray, and look fine for tabletop play, but I have a lot I'd do, just basic techniques, were I to handle 'em again.

“Squad Aurivorous”
“Squad Bullion”

These two large squads of Adeptus Astartes were swept unknowing into the battle for the Treasury by their corrupted leaders, Master Sergeant Fossik and Master Sergeant Intaglio. The influence of the Noise Marine Mentors & Tutors, and of Aurelian Avarice & the insidious Keeper of Secrets named Precious proved too much for even the dedicated marines. As they slew the loyal Imperial Guard and their brethren Marines their war songs of praise to the Emperor twisted around to minor keys and painful disharmonies to lilt hosannas to Horus instead.

“Master Sergeant Fossik”
“Master Sergeant Intaglio

These inveterate gamblers constantly take bets on whose squad can bring in the biggest haul of precious-metallized victims. Portly Imperial Guard Commissars are especially coveted targets – the more weight, the more jewels! Their Doom Sirens proclaim the wealth Slaanesh will give to those who heed their words – the desire and covetousness made sound rends flesh and turns it to precious gemstones and crystals.

“Mint”
“Bank”

Originally commandeered by General Avarice during the great Slaaneshi Imperial Treasury heist to transport countless loads of valuables through the Warp Gate into Slaanesh’s realm, these Rhinos became encrusted with the gold dust of millions of coins and studded with precious gems. Infested with spirits of those ground to gemstones beneath their silver tracks, these living transports are a shining blight upon the battlefield. Now they transport Squad Aurivorous and Bullion, respectively, into the fray, their cargo no less precious to Slaanesh.

Yep, so here's the first two Bedazzled(tm) Rhinos. These always get a laugh from tourney opponents.

“The Board”
These jump infantry elite marines were part of a rapid response team that caught the Imperial Treasury guards pink-handed. They glimpsed the beauty of Slaanesh’s realm through the Warp Gate and have never looked back, and now fulfill their reconnaissance role seeking out new ‘mergers & acquisitions’ for The Glittering Host. The Board is equipped with a shining Icon of Slaanesh, a beacon into the world of dross for the Glittering Host that inspires greed in all mortals who see it.

7 Raptors @ 210 Pts

“Chairman Goldman”

Sergeant “Chairman” Goldman is a prime example of the law that every businessman rises to his level of incompetence and no higher. Goldman is jokingly called the Chairman by the Board of Raptors due to the purity of his greed. So focused on acquisitiveness, he his especially vulnerable to the trans-Warp attentions of Precious, and in battle usually becomes the host for the monstrous, glinting form of the Greater Daemon.

Chairman Goldman there still has his dual Lightning Claws, I know. I like the model so I use 'em anyway, but I really should just replace 'em with a regular Raptor... or maybe a Slaaneshified jump marine sergeant. I had fun with the bases on these guys, since I had a lot of vertical room to work with.

“The Gross Income”
Though it began as a security tank guarding the Imperial Treasury, the Vindicator now known as the Gross Income became one of The Glittering Host when its crew, succumbing to Slaanesh’s mad greed, packed billions in Throne Gelt of bars of heavy gold into the cannon, and lay waste to the oncoming Imperial Guard forces trying to prevent the grand theft. Even now its ordinance is packed with precious metals and diamond spikes, pounding into the enemy like deadly pennies from a wrathful Heaven.

<table ><tr><td></td></tr></table>

I do like what I was able to do with inks on this Vindi - plus some nice, subtle gemstones set it off as the accessory every Lash list needs!

“Brother Bear”
“Brother Bull”

These two Obliterator Cult members are all that are left of a large squad of Terminators who rushed into the Warp Rift in pursuit of the Greater Daemon Precious. Turned around and tempted, they came upon what the Daemon sensed was their greatest weakness – the lust of superior firepower. The power of Slaanesh infused them and they gorged impossibly on plasma cannons, flamers, lascannons, and more until their bodies were aswarm with rent flesh, exposed bone, and bristling weaponry. Ever hungering for the next weapons upgrade Bull and Bear now support the Glittering Host in its relentless acquisitions, often arguing explosively over who will have the privilege of consuming the next weapons cache they capture.

2 Obliterators @ 150 Pts
Power Fist; Obliterator Weapons; Fearless; Slow and Purposeful
<table ><tr><td></td></tr></table>
<table ><tr><td></td></tr></table>

These Oblits were the first models I painted coming back to the hobby after so long. They are OK, but the faces are generally awful, and this was before I figured out how to paint powered weapons. I did paint 3 of the Oblits, so I'm showing 'em all here, but the actual 1750 Glittering Host tourney list calls for 2.

Whew, well there you go Dakkaites. A start, and with more to come. For Pain! For Pleasure! For Slaanesh!

Cheers!

From the looks of it, you've taken primed models and given them a wash of (very watered down) pinks and purples? Is that close? It's pretty apparent on the vehicles.

First thing is that all your cracks and crevices are brighter than the surrounding areas of the models, which is the exact opposite of what they should be. Like here:

For instance, his forehead should be lighter than the area around his eyes, and his chest piece should be lighter than the line under his neck piece. It's worse on oyur vehicles because the lines are deeper and brighter.

Second, if you're using the wash method I mentioned above, then you're putting it on way too light and seemingly with no base coat. Like here:

The primer coat is plainly clear here, like you didn't put down a layer after priming. Also, see how on the top of the tank you're getting pooling? I'd have to say that's because you're not using a strong enough paint, or it's too watered down. The light color washing isn't helping either. Honestly it looks like you're using watercolors and it frankly needs a lot of work.

Paint your stuff with the light color first (base-coated, not washed) and then use a darker colored wash over the top to shade the recesses and creases. From your color scheme, I'd suggest pink base coats and a purple wash or ink. Then hit your metals with silver and gold. They can be washed with the purple too, though you might want lighter washes to let the metal shine through more.

Thanks for the advice Cosmic - I've begun to do just as you suggest with my upcoming Daemon army.

I did a black prime on these, with a pink 'wet wash' that filled in the cracks with that reverse effect that you note. My plan was to make it look like they were inverted, glowing with warp energy and then highlighted with some directionally-sensitive acrylic metallic paint.

As a technique it pretty much failed :(, but at least does look interesting (I think) on the tabletop for regular play.

With my Daemon army in progress (there's a post round here with a step-by-step of the first model, a Soul Grinder) I'm returning to less problematic methods!

I have had some good success with the washes/inks over metallics so I'll definitely be working with them.

I've got a few more squads of the Host I'll post up, then get motivated on Daemons for the new year.

Cheers!

I sorta like the reverse shadowing thing you've got going on. I didn't at first but it grew on me as an idea for a gaudy, mindbending slaaneshi theme. I really like the idea for your army too, very clever.

Keep practicing your skills and you'll be flying. Cosmic's advice is all good, I just happen to like the look for this army, jarring as it is, I think it suits.

I figured that's what you might be doing, but for it to work the contrast has to be a lot starker. Basically darker outsides and brighter insides. Good luck. I've tried it and have had limited success. It's pretty tough.

I like the reverse shadowing too, it almost makes them look like theyre glowing from within with the Gaudy Warp Energies of Slaanesh ™. I love the fluff aswell, perfectly suited to the army.

I also very much dig the bases, but a bit of constructive criticism: have you thought about doing the trim in a different colour, so it offsets the piles of gold?

keep up the good work!

Hookay, well I took advantage of the low pound sterling and got myself a little birthday present in February that I'm putting together a step-by-step for... It's looking like the the Glittering Host is gonna get a little air support very soon!

These will be my first resin models ever, and so far I'm doing well with a huge problematic exception that I'm hoping I can get some help with from more experienced Dakka folks.

More in a few hours when I get home from work...

OK, here we go!

I've acquired a small 40k air squadron of d00000000000m - one Hell Talon Fighter/Bomber and two Hell Blade Fighters as escorts. Very excited to get these going and play 'em with the rest of my 40k opponents in the next Apoc game! Lots of work to be done before that happens, so let's get to it...

Here they are in the raw, out of the bag from ForgeWorld:

The Blades

The Talon

Never mind the Aspiring Champ there, he's just hainging out for scale purposes.

The models are just amazing. Check out the Hell Talon pilot & crew:

These are my first FW pieces and in taking them apart and removing flash I found I needed to get some tools I haven't needed - a rebreather mask and the Citadel saw. After removing all the large pieces of flash and cleaning up spots, planning out how to put them together and where I'd need to touch things up with Greenstuff.

I soaked the models in dishsoaped-water and gave them a scrubbing in the sink with my fingers, then set about test assembling the Hell Talon. I had some trouble figuring what goes where, but eventually got it going.

Topside

Underside

This thing is frakking big. 18" from engine back to front wingtip (this will haunt me later). My GF said that it scared her. Excellent.

Trying out more pieces (just placement at this point - no glue)

Fantasizing about what I'm gonna be able to do with a Lascannon that can fly around 36" every turn. The Havok launcher is temporary - I'll have a magnetic swap system set up so I can change the Havok with an Autocannon if necessary.

Next, I popped the pilots into place and started gluing things together. I went in with a bit of greenstuff to fill in cracks and such.

I made a random discovery in my hardware junk drawer - some brass tacks that turned out to be the perfect lightweight metal to provide a ferrous surface for my first time using Rare Earth Magnets. Got a bunch of magnets via mailorder in preperation for this project, so I put 'em to use.

8 Hell Bombs drop mounts and one swappable Autocannon/Havok hard point. Clipped off the pointy bit on the tacks, and slathered with Zap-a-Gap.

Hell Bomb with cylinder magnet, with liberal Zap-a-Gap. I wasn't smart enough to keep the magnets separate as I did the 8 bombs, so fun times were had as they attracted and repelled each other, coated in quickdry glue.

Probably should have just gotten the teenier disc magnets, but these'll do. Had to dig out a good bunch of the resin on each bomb to get the magnet situated right. Next time, I'm getting a gakking dremel.

They work! I'll likely greenstuff around the magnets a bit though to make them sit flush with the surface.

Now, Houston, we have a problem. Having the large Hell Talon on a flat surface works fine, see:

But if its left supported by the center section, the wings exhibit a distinctly un-Slaaneshi droop! Oh noes! Really, this totally never happens to me...

It's not particularly warm at my apartment, and reshaping the wings by heating and cooling doesn't make any difference. So sadly I'm kinda stuck on what to do with this! Any suggestions, O Dakka gods of resin modeling?

Leaving the Hell Talon for awhile, I proceeded to work on the two Hell Blades, which were a lot easier to handle due to their size and fewer number of pieces. Here's a pic of using hot water to straighten the Autocannons, which were 'dressing to the left' slightly.

Primed and ready to paint! This was using the gold spraypaint that worked so well for my Soulgrinder...

Well, that's all for this episode. Hopefully I can get some suggestions on that pesky droopage on the Hell Talon wings from y'all...

Let me know what you think. Any C&C much appreciated.

Cheers,
Slaaneshi

The Hellblade and Talon look great... too bad for the evil resin droop. I think you may have had a bad cure on the resin for the Hellblade. This happened to me with one of my Chaos Dreadnought Close Combat Arms and I still haven't figured out how to "harden" it up. Fortunately, the arm is small and light so doesn't droop the way your talon does. I hope you find a solution, since its a great model and you put a lot of work into it.

Good luck

Excellent theme for your models. More gold should be used on the infantry imo, to break up the purple and pink. Other than that, excellent work!

The only way you are going to be able to fix that droop is to add externeral or internal support. I recomend steel rod of about 14 to 12 gauge as 16 will most likely just bend with the resin. The rods can be run on the outside and GSed in place with some possiblities of nice conversions, or you can try you luck at running a long thin drill bit down the length of the wing (this is much more challenging and I would recomend you straighten them before you do this =).

Good luck and its looking good.

With regards to what sonofruss is saying, I have heard that this often yields results in terms of them sending you new parts. Unfortunately, even if you do that you will still need to build a new one :( which is cool, but all that time gone I think Clay's advice is good, especially the part where you maybe do it on outside, or partial inside outside, and use it as a conversion for some power conduit or something Drilling a long hole through those wings sounds like a dangerous adventure
