i prefer the look of the second plane, it looks like it can go faster than the other one, which is very important obviously!!!
do you know the name of the kits used, and what scale they are???

I think they need a lot of work.

They have potential, but are no where near good yet.

They still look like plane models with guns stuck on them, out of scale guns even as you haven't made it so that the plane is 40k scale at all.

The battleship? I'd say rip everything off the hull and start from there, and even then it will likely look like a battleship model with stuff stuck to it.'

Projects like this require amazing amounts of work, more so than doing normal conversions, as the base models here need to be converted themselves before any real work begins.

The end result can look amazing, but only if the work is put into it.

Hmm, I think the wings on the second plane should be more orkified, and the engine cowling should be less precision made. make a bulkier engine cowling with plasticard and make it less round. Add lotsa gubbinz and make the exhaust ports alot more... well... orklike... I cant really explain it...

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Negative? Not really, but as a large community here we see a tonne of people's work. A lot of people here are artists of conversions and make amazing creations, and others make...crap.

If everyone says everything is great or good, no one ever gets a sense of their skill, they think its great and go about the status quo...

Your work here has the potential to be great, but the work you've shown so far isn't great. Your main enemy here is going to be scale. I still don't see any way that plane could fit an ork in it, let alone carry those huge guns and still fly.

If you don't want comments that aren't praise, wait a little longer in your process before you post pics.

If you want criticism, do like you're doing now, just don't complain when people don't like them as-is.

well if we want to debate scale, how did 10 space marines fit into a rhino my friend?

warhammer is only semi-accurate to scale, i realize you're trying hard to come across as intelligent and playing devil's advocate but when one says something has potential it is implied that it's current state is not terribly great.

no need for 'they look bad' again, i had mentioned i have jst started these but thanks for the warm welcome to this site.

btw, if your eye is so perfect, why dont you stop by the thousands of threads where people are showcasing their garbage paintjobs and drop your 2 cents in their piggy banks.

lol

at any rate, great forum! (not sarcastic)

Hold your horses my friend,Dakka is known for its good critisim and total honesty.and thats all thats bean said hes given an oppinion of what you have shown it doesnt matter if its done or not.Would you belive the reason he said that is to help you get it right the first time.Im gonna say i like the planes and i hope to see a whole load of these soon. But come on you get one post you dont like and you shoot like bottle rocket. My advice is to look at the bad comments and take something from them not spit venom at someone for trying to help you out.

First, welcome to dakka.

second: good work. I love the rough plating the second plane have.

third: easy things you could do:
- Drill the gun barrels.
- Scrape off the imperial logo on the guns.
- Add something that belong to WH40K beside the gun on the first model to avoid the gun-glued-on-toy effect.

I think a better choice for a ship to model on is an Ironclad, I think Zvezda make one that builds up to be about a foot long.

Reason i picked your thread? I love Orks, and someone here on Dakka did an Orkish navy army recently. His too started off as a motley collection of...crap, lol but he turned it into a masterful looking bunch of conversions.

That said he put a tremendous amount of time and energy into his work.

If you're put off this easily by 1 or 2 comments you might not want to stick around Dakka.

I want to see you do well on this project, but I was worried you may not know what you're getting yourself into.

My first post had no negative spin, but with your urging, my second post had some.

Take this one as you will, but lighten up a bit it will do you wonders here on dakka.

For the battlewagon, consider giving it some legs (like a stompa).

That way you end up with something like Dai Gurren Lagan

wow this is a little bit spooky i just ordered a bunch of ship model kits im going to base my orks on the fact they just rearmed and repaired from a heavly battle damaged port :-)

i really like the plasti card shapes on the side of the plane (sorry dont know name!!) are you going to rivit them up to look like they are covering battle damage or are they decritive? (the pilot looks cool too!!)

Whats your plan with the ships? are you going to add massive wheels, tracks or have it pulled along by grotz?

look forward to updates

First off I aplaud you for even attempting these projects. Although I personally feel qualified to take something like this on, I rarely feel motivated. I realize that you are still very early into this project so take the following feedback as simply thoughts on the models so far...

All: All of the models are too clean and too precise. They obviously have not been orkimodified enough yet. When I look at them all I'm really seeing at this stage is the original model with some extra bits tacked on.

Zero: Basically this is far too sleak a model. I would make some efforts to break up the clean lines and contours. Larger engine cowling, thicker tail and wings, Lots more bombs, missiles, fuel tanks, etc under the wings, perhaps even a grot tail gunner or something. Also the canopy is far too clean and precise, maybe open up the top of it or get rid of the center piece altogether.

P-40: Now this is a model that lends itself to the tiger mouth painted on the front. Do so, or the ghosts of the Flying Tigers will curse your dice! Many of the previous comments for the Zero apply to the P-40. I like that you've added additional plates. Maybe try adding a few more smaller wings to break up the very recognizable shape of the original models? Canopy is still painful for me to look at... I think a small ball turret under the rear of the wing where the fuselage arcs up would look kind of cool.

U.S.S. Iowa: This one is the hardest for me to swallow. I suspect this model will turn out to be too long and too thin to look good on the battlefield. Personally I'd like to see this with the stern of the ship as the front with the bow trailing behind. Perhaps two huge wheels on the stern with the bow dragging behind through the ground like a plow. I think the guns and superstructure have to go as they are too small in scale and clearly identify the model. Personally I'd cut the model just behind the aft turret and just behind the 1st forward turret, throw out the middle, and join the two pieces together. This might solve the length issue.

Now, with all that being said... if you play BFG that would be an awesome start to the most amazing space hulk ever! Probably have to be a mega hulk and make custom rules but that would be so awesome... (making mental note...)

And finally the B-17. It's hard to tell but this looks like one of the smaller kits and I just don't know if it will have enough bulk to convey what you'd like it to. I would try to stay true to the B-17 idea, Flying Fortress, which means guns everywhere! Base it off the later models and add turrets everywhere. You might consider adding a B-24 style tail.

Hope that helps and best of luck to you!

Swoop!
