Hey!
first topic, and not sure if this question has been asked before... (didnt feel like wading through 72 pages of forums XD)
I've ran into this promblem quite often and just wanted it to get clarified once and for all
Tyranids synapse rules clearly state that they pass all morale ect.... but they dont state that they are fearless..
I dont own the rulebook but I was wondering if they do or dont suffer from wounds if they lose combat?
thanks for any clarification.
( btw the errata didnt say anything either thats why I'm a tad confused)

People ask if playing as the witch hunters, tyranids, and warriors of chaos gives me mixed feelings.. In which I judge them for their "crimes" (burning them guilty or not), declare it in the name of the gods, then digest them back into the bio-goodness..

That's pretty rude and not really what dakka's all about, check yourself.
That being said, tyranid units that are within synapse range are subject to no retreat as the BRB states on page 44:
These units do not take Morale checks and will never fall back
under the synapse rule it says that models within synapse range never fall back

There are some units that are fearless regardless of synapse. Taking extra wounds can be rough but being able to stay in combat and not be run down by the enemy is pretty nice. Sometimes that extra longevity is just enough time for the next wave to hit. If you need a cheap codex I would suggest a used one on peebay.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.
But ya, it can get really annoying when ur basic genestealers with 5+ sv's get decimated by no retreat....
and especially when ur bigger creatures get unlucky 1's on them (not to say nids big creatures die easily in combat but crap happens )

I'm not completely sure about this because I haven't thought to look it up, but Genestealers are capable of acting without synapse. You could simply take a morale test, almost nothing is going to be able Sweeping Advance a I6 stealer...

Genestealers don't need Synapse but they're affected if within range. Their Brood Telepathy special rule is only used when outside Synapse.

you should be able to choose brood or synapse... owell

Try using outflank, then if you deploy further up the baord you won't be getting any no retreat wounds.

I don't know. I don't think Dakka is intended to be a substitute for having a rulebook. It is one thing to be confused and ask about a clarification. But to come asking for rule quotes because you don't bother to get a rulebook, is something else.
just havnt had enough money too..
I call BS. Or rather, if you can't afford the 10-15 bucks it takes to get a mine-rulebook, then this hobby is not for you.

hmmmm.. thought you could only buy the minibook with the blackreach set or whatever..
and btw if someone wants to respond to my question and dont care about taking the time out of their way to answer my question, then thats their choice, and I shouldnt have to deal with people being rude when posting somthing.
thanks to everyone that has responded to my question without being rude.
nyways, ya outflanking is definatly a choice, and I usually do, but most of the time the enemy is close to my other units by that point and it puts me closer to the synapse... I can see how it would work though
and im really debating giving my stealers the 4+ save just cuz i usually play marines and the like, and the AP5 kills me..
wat do you guys think?

Rulebook, www.bartertown.com Gamer's trade and sales site, real easy to pick up a softcopy rulebook there for 10-15 dollars or even some extra miniatures you have lying around.

the carapace is a personal choice. Try with and without. Some like it and some don't. I personally run with more stealers instead

I agree with you, Dakka shouldn't be used as a subsititue for a rulebook.
But being outright rude to someone when at the time it was their third post isn't something that's going to keep people coming to Dakka or contributing to our image.
Even with the rulebook this might be a question that confuses some people as we can see by the several posts needed to clarify how synapse works with different types of units.

ooo nice website, ill have to check it out next time i buy models. Thnks
ya I might give it a try, but the army im running has 3 units of 8 genestealers with scuttlers and FT for 20 pts a pop, which unfortunatly adds up in my army in which I want to run other things... I cant see myself running 24 pt stealers now that i think about it...
my carnifex's take up alot of points on their own, almost 1/4, but they are fex's.. which are smexy in general
