Indeed. Compared to this classic, quite disappointing imo

Not an unmitigated disaster, but still.

Imagine if it had been an updated version that evoked the solid, menacing, immovable spectre of the original instead of this new frail and waifish thing they've chosen instead. Shame.

I like the new guy, mostly. The back banner is a little over the top and dominates the model, not in a good way.

I really like the New Maugan Ra, I think the robes accentuate the grim reaper theme, but it would be nice if he came with a non-hooded head for those who would prefer it.

I also just now realized they changed the ammunition feed to conform with the banana shuriken clips that were first introduced in 3rd edition. I liked the old ammo feed direct from his back, just as I liked the old style belt fed shuriken cannons as seen on the Vyper jetbike artwork. No need to pause and slap a new banana clip in, and allows Maugan Ra to continue reaping without interruption.

I like the hood, but agree he’s also look good with a head swap. I’d say grab one from the new Dark Reaper kit, but if those are any better would be hotly debated. I’m sure there are some elf skull helms out there in the assorted ranges that would work.

Yeah the fact that the hood is going on top of so many details breaks the shapes too much and the fact they painted all black doesn't help here.

I would change the head, remove back of pack and sculpt something less imposing, change the pose a bit to less "Guitar player doing the splits", reduce weapon size.

An executioner head from fantasy/aos could work. It's not fully enclosed though.

Surprised they didn't give him skeleton toes, but that's an aesthetic they've been getting away from, as none of the chaplains have it iirc. Also, could all dark reapers have the vanes on their backpiece and not the helmet? If it works for Ra, it should work for them. :/

Sooo, why Reapers have ugly, garbage helmets when their boss has really nice, stylized skull one? Did he trademarked it or something and they had to make do with knockoffs made by orks or something?

New Spears look really nice, too, and Corsairs are zillion times better than awful, top heavy, bug headed FW attempt. I still think half of Eldar range looks really dumb but these and new Rangers are A+. Though, I can't help but notice Spears and Warlocks are dudes only club.

You mean, someone with actually humanoid anatomy instead of ugly, squat dwarf missing half his spine and comical pauldrons bigger than his torso guaranteeing he can only "aim" sideways?

Dakka never ceases to amaze me, but complaining elf models are actually trying to be lithe and graceful is a new one

So there is apparently one big Eldar reveal still to show.

Wonder if it will be a Cobra Super Heavy Grav Tank?

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

At times I wonder if I'm looking at the same model as everyone else. I love the new Maugan Ra. It's a huge improvement of the old model (which I bought when he was new) that is short and squat and doesn't look like an Eldar at all.
The new model has a sense of power but still has some of the grace that the Eldar are known for. The tattered cloak is awesome.
I will agree that the back banner is a little too high. I would remove a few of the vertebrae but other than that he's awesome.

I think you misunderstood what they meant. The last aeldari reveal was the corsair kill team model.

The "Updated" part of my previous comment is an operative word. Ofc nobody wants an exact replica of the 25y/o original in plastic. Needs to be taller, needs the proportions fixed, these things go without saying.

For those saying he looks like an edgelord rocker, two thoughts:

We have Jain Zar as the queen of 80s hair metal, and this guy. Who else do we need to get the band rocking?

If we ditched the backpack, and some of the reaper runes, how well do you think he’d work as an alt death jester? That sort of showmanship fits their aesthetics much better.

I love everything else about the design, but as noted earlier, the Tactical Battle Splits pose is just insanely bad. It looked stupid enough with Drazhar, who is at least supposed to be a very nimble fellow, this is just something else.

Still, I guess we did ask for updated Phoenix Lords, and the monkey's paw provided

Really love the Corsair, hope the rest of the kit is as good, thinking of the kit bash potential with the rest of the new range.
The Shining Spears are gorgeous as well, especially the detail on the Exarch and the bare face looks great.
The Eldar army shot really shows how good the new models look all together- the Warlocks look much better I that perspective with their helmets on. But I have high hopes for the Corsair Killteam set.

Were the rumours not about the Corsairs being in the codex? I may be wrong though.

Probably but likely not all of them - same as the Novice Sisters are not in the Codex.

Probably never shared because of the excessive "redacting", but someone posted this on Reddit previously
Spoiler:

So Corsairs are definitely in the Eldar codex. Even if we can see any of the juicy info it definitely has the same artwork for the Voidscarred on the left which I don't think was shared until today.

Anyone else get the feeling that we're done seeing any more new models?
There's little point showing a group picture like the one below if it doesn't include the entire set of new models.
So unless there's a "Wave 2" a bit down the road, it looks like half the Aspect Warriors are still gonna be fail-cast for a few more YEARS.

The spears look OK, would have preferred more decoration to make them stand out as Aspects. Kind of how old high elf dragon princes compared to silver helms. If guardian windriders are silver helms, I want more dragon prince in my shining spears.
The bright white is not doing them any favours either. May have to find a way to spruce them up a little.
Maugan Ra is fine except that backpack is too much. Something will need to be done. I actually would have preferred if the all the reapers looked like this (cloak etc). I do understand the remarks about stance however. I guess they wanted a static pose, but still feel imposing.
I don't think I'm going to buy the new eldar box set. I don't need Rangers, and although I like the look of the shroud runners, I don't think they'll have a place in my lists. The Avatar is a must though, and I look forward to adding to my aspects as most of my current army is wraith construct themed.

I don’t think in the modern day we can conclude new models will be years out.

GW no longer follow “new models only with a new codex”.

I suspect, but can off no proof, that the waves they release are based on Average Spend. GW certainly has the systems and the data to do such an analysis, and track it.

So it may be (remember, this is purely speculation) that their data shows a major release’s average spend is say, £300.00. So they tie any raft of releases around that average spend, to maximise sales of the new kits, without leaving any out.

Give it six months, do another wave, again with a collective spend of around the £300.00. End of the day they get £600 in all, and no particular kit falls by the way side.

We as gamers may want 12 shiny things, but can only realistically buy 6 shiny things. GW bait us with 6 now, 6 later, and we ultimately end up with the 12 shiny things.

I think it's probably wave 1. There are rumours of some additional new units, and of at least Swooping Hawks.

Having said that I don't think we're getting Scorpions or Fire Dragons any time soon.

I admit I don't really like the composition of this new Maugan Ra. I don't like the robe covering up so much detail. I want to see that bony armor. The spine banner pole in the back seems a bit excessive and even taller than the older one. Don't know how he'd fit through a door or maneuver through any form of cover. The stance reminds me too much of the Death Jester. One of Maugan Ra's powers from his story about his assistance at Iyanden was the power to root himself immovably to the ground so I would not have minded him planted firmly on the ground. It's a power that his followers mimic through the Dark Reapers having reinforced leg armor with bracing to absorb weapon recoil.

Something like this, based off an picture in a past Codex, is what I would have preferred:
Spoiler:

It gives a sense of solidity that is in contrast to the other Eldar, and shows how Maugan Ra was different to his fellow Phoenix Lords.

I was just about to link that guy you did. There are other three great renditions out there. One is a heavy conversion of the classic:
Spoiler:

The pose, the robes and the proper chunkiness is how Maugan Ra should look like if '90 casting process allowed such poses.

Next one is the one you linked, just another take on it, the Banegan Ra:
Spoiler:

And now my personal favourite, grim-as-feth-reaper Maugan Ra, it doesn't really more death incarnated look than that. What is most amazing about this one is that this is a conversion of the original.
Spoiler:

And what we got instead? Manga Ra, straight out of HIM concert, there should be a conclave of squeaking teens to accompany him to battle. I hate how he has a waistline and an hourglass concept behind the sculpt is just pretentious as feth. And I know I repeat myself, but I really hate plastic capes/cloaks, made even worse looking by the comic over-the-edge highlighted paintjobs. Just for completeness sake in a single post:

For now, probably. There are rumours posted earlier in this thread (from the same sources who leaked codex details) that there's another Eldar wave coming next year. At least one source said that Hawk & Spider models are done.

GW's goal for the big codex + range updates like this seems to focus two things:
  • Get players who don't collect that faction already to buy in
  • Don't release too much in one go (10-12 kits seems to be the max), as it has diminishing returns.

  • In this case they seem to have focused heavily on core units like generic HQ & all Troop entries so anyone starting an Eldar army now is getting new models for the essentials. Half the Aspect infantry are now in plastic, and more Aspect updates can be done independently later on like with Blood of the Phoenix.

I'm confident that at least some of them are already 'done' but are being held back for a later release.

I'm secretly happy that scorps and dragons aren't done yet as I recently painted the resin ones and would like a little use out of them. Haven't built my banshees yet or upgraded my Avengers from old metal ones, but will add reapers and spears until we see more plastic aspects.
I'm also building aspect wraithlords with scorpion finished and avenger in process. Will add reaper one next.

    I mostly agree with this.
The spear seem rather bland. Not sure if its the paint job or what.

My conversion idea for shining spears currently:

I have a bunch of venari dawnrider helmets I got off ebay and DA torsos being slapped on windrider legs and some sawn off bright lances

The white needs more contrast (not necessarily Contrast, though) in the paint job - and they probably shouldn't be presented on a bright white background, either.
