I was just thinking about the people who I usually game with and wondering who could be a TFG however I couldn't think of anyone who I would associate with the term TFG. Then it occurred to me that I could be the TFG

So what I need right now is a list of criteria for what you would class as a TFG so I can check myself against them and hopefully dismiss these fears

Do you...
1) Often talk about unbeatable tactics?
2) Laugh when other people are not laughting?
3) Gloat over wins?
4) Blame bad dice for losses?
5) Blame cheezy armies for losses?
6) Often talk about how certain army builds are cheezy?
7) Shower less than once every day?
8) Talk alot about how good your army is and then lose?
9) Throw temper tantrums when things don't go your way?
10) Act out in ways that end up causing models to be broken (like getting mad at a unit and throwing them roughly back into their box or onto the floor)?
11) Argue over rules to the point where people pack up and quit playing "because they don't want to admit you're right".
12) Talk trash to people who don't talk trash back?
13) Find that people give very short answers to questions you ask and then don't seem to keep up their end of a conversation?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you may be TFG.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

I would put an * next to blame bad dice. Cause even the best laid out plans, tactics or whatever will fail to the dice gods just not being happy with you.

But if you constatnly blame bad dice then yes i agree.

TFG

Wow, Phoenix, you must have had a run in with either a string of TFG's or one really humongous TFG.

I can't really question any of the criteria you posted. Now, to hopefully make you feel a little better with your worry that you (the OP) might be TFG, here is a partial checklist to look at:

1. When you walk in the FLGS, do people call out a hello to you from across the room?
2. When you are at a gaming place, do people you know go out of their way to greet you and shake your hand?
3. Do other players actively seek you out for a game? If you cannot play at that time, do they seem disappointed?
4. When groups of players decide to go get something to eat, do they invite you to come along?
5. Do other players come to you to ask advice about army builds, tactics or rules?
6. Are other players of all different ages comfortable in approaching you to ask for a game, a rules question, etc.?
7. Do other players invite you to participate in non-GW/wargaming events with them (sporting events, going to a bar/club, joining a RPG game group, etc.)?\
8. Do parents of younger gamers appear to trust you around their children?
9. Do you honestly have a good time when playing a friend in a game and you get destroyed by him? (Assuming said "friend" isn't TFG himself.)
10. When in a group of your peers, can you laugh at yourself and allow yourself to be laughed at?

The more of the above questions you answered "yes" to, the less likely you might be TFG.

No (unless evil laugh counts)

Phoenix wrote:3) Gloat over wins?

Sort of but in a friendly way

Phoenix wrote:4) Blame bad dice for losses?

Wouldn't blame an entire game on bad dice

Phoenix wrote:5) Blame cheezy armies for losses?

No

Phoenix wrote:6) Often talk about how certain army builds are cheezy?

Havn't encountered yet but I think lots of Nob Bikers would be pretty cheezy

Phoenix wrote:7) Shower less than once every day?

Always shower at least once a day

Phoenix wrote:8) Talk alot about how good your army is and then lose?

Well I do the losing part alot

Phoenix wrote:9) Throw temper tantrums when things don't go your way?

No

Phoenix wrote:10) Act out in ways that end up causing models to be broken (like getting mad at a unit and throwing them roughly back into their box or onto the floor)?

Hell no those models cost good money and took ages to paint

Phoenix wrote:11) Argue over rules to the point where people pack up and quit playing "because they don't want to admit you're right".

Never take rules disputes that far

basically if you are worried about being TFG then you aren't TFG. The logic behind this is simple. You are worried about being a buzzkill in your social group, which means you care about the fun level of your fellow gamers. People who care can't really be TFG's ( or as I like to call them d**che canoes =P)

Also, I would be seriously worried about any parents who trusted me with their children, because I would sell them to the first person who made a decent cash offer.

2) Laugh when other people are not laughting?

I laugh all the time. I think that is being happy

4) Blame bad dice for losses?

I have 3-4 games I attribute but my bad luck is known around my community. All the bad luck in the world means nothing if your opponent cant capitalize on it.

9) Throw temper tantrums when things don't go your way?

I do it if my luck is going horribly for me. I never blame my opponent or his army. I always blame me.

10) Act out in ways that end up causing models to be broken (like getting mad at a unit and throwing them roughly back into their box or onto the floor)?

I once threw a basilisk against a wall because of such a game (6 turns of not hitting a single model)

12) Talk trash to people who don't talk trash back?

I talk trash to everyone

Comparing tournament records is another form of e-peen measuring.

3) Gloat over wins? * never
4) Blame bad dice for losses? *never
5) Blame cheezy armies for losses? *sometimes, but our RTS are known to have some power gamers that only makes cheese armies to play. ( he gloats to the cheeziness himself )
6) Often talk about how certain army builds are cheezy? ** not really but sometimes when i sit there gluing, TFG sits on same table to plan his cheeze army, he might ask me questions and i reply

12) Talk trash to people who don't talk trash back?**never
13) Find that people give very short answers to questions you ask and then don't seem to keep up their end of a conversation? ** sometimes... but there might be a reason due to age gap at my shop,
i was 15 ish and everyone else is 40+ I dont know DnD and they dont know Anime .

1. When you walk in the FLGS, do people call out a hello to you from across the room? All the time, they always say "yaaay ready to play against my new list?!" then i had to choose who to play against first :"P
2. When you are at a gaming place, do people you know go out of their way to greet you and shake your hand? ** er no one does that at my shop o_o
3. Do other players actively seek you out for a game? If you cannot play at that time, do they seem disappointed? ** yes but that might be because i have different armies and they are excited to play against them all.
4. When groups of players decide to go get something to eat, do they invite you to come along? ** depends, they know i dont like greasy food, but they offer to buy me drinks
5. Do other players come to you to ask advice about army builds, tactics or rules? ** Sure, if they know i have that army and have experience on it.
6. Are other players of all different ages comfortable in approaching you to ask for a game, a rules question, etc.? ** yep, but the rules usually gets answered by TFG ( hes the know it all o_o )
7. Do other players invite you to participate in non-GW/wargaming events with them (sporting events, going to a bar/club, joining a RPG game group, etc.)? ** Age gap , i dont drink , but they always try to get me to play RPG stuff
8. Do parents of younger gamers appear to trust you around their children? ** Im the youngest there
9. Do you honestly have a good time when playing a friend in a game and you get destroyed by him? (Assuming said "friend" isn't TFG himself.) ** I dont play game to win, if anything i choose my list by models i like ( my opponent knows this , i also bring different army everytime usually )
10. When in a group of your peers, can you laugh at yourself and allow yourself to be laughed at? ** Yes , but the group never really laugh at me cuz they feel like they are my uncle i guess?

do you paint your models?

do you show respect for your opponent, the terrain, and their models?

do you bring your kid to the store and let them walk on the tables, play with terrain, and carry a rifle case when mutliple times you've been told not to?

no, i ment to say "do you paint your models, or do you complain about the hobby"

we've been trying to promote fully painted army's at the store but some people just don't try.

jj tells us this is ment to be a story, and i don't remember hearing about grey or silver men coming out of the tree's. its just that much better to have even a partially painted army.

Hmm its hard to say... i like painting other people's army , i hate painting my own.

When they give me a picture to paint the scheme to, its pretty easy, but when i stare at my black primed army , my mind just goes blank.

I still think unpainted mini "can" still look better then painted ones. You just havnt seen the ones that are Painted Beyond Recognition.

Now, these might seem to be going out on a limb, but since I've seen multiple TFGs with these defects, I figured I might as well point them out.

Do you:

1.) Feel it's okay to use racial slurs, because no one of said race is in the room? (I've actually had someone exclaim "Oh, that f****** n*****" after my Defiler destroyed his HQ)

2.) Use excessive profanity around other people's children?

3.) Have an army that depicts Swastikas or other equally offensive iconography?

4.) Blatantly disrespect women?

Now, I really hope you don't have to answer yes to any of that. If you do? That's basically instant TFG material.

This is it in a nutshell people. If the concern that you're TFG has entered your head, you're automatically disqualified. TFG always thinks he's everyone's favorite opponent, and is bewildered when confronted about his behavior. To fulfill my part in Godwin's Law, I promise Hitler never sat in his office, twirling his Snidely Whiplash mustache, and declared how deliciously evil his plans were. He thought he was doing the world a favour, just like TFG thinks he's a magnificent, entertaining opponent, and all around fun guy to be in the company of.

Good thing none of my armies have those or will have any of those.

But in all seriousness I don't think I have ever met TFG in any of the GWs I have gone too, sure there are a couple of people I don't like getting dragged into conversations with but that's because the go on for ever and ever and I've herd part of the stories before.

And as far as I know I'm not TFG, I look but don't touch, I complement paint jobs and Army themes, if people ask for their opinion I give it. Over all at the store generally I just speak with the employees, while getting things for my armies or discussing plans for them. In return they ask me to bring in my armies to play a game, which generally I turn down because I don't think my army is ready to be fielded though often I am told other wise.

Hmm I like the logic. Anyway thanks for all the responses and I'm confident I'm not TFG one thing about painted models though. Most of them are painted but a few (Harlequins and HQ's) I haven't painted. This is because my painting just isn't good enough to give these the paint jobs they deserve.

Do pentagrams count? I know I'm not a TFG because my win/loss record is like 3 for 100 and I really don't care as long as I get to play.

I think for me what defines TFG is a high level of negativity.

40K isn't life, it's something we do to instead of life, and so it should be fun and relaxing compared to normal life, or there's no reason to do it.

Excessively negative and critical people who drain the fun out of the hobby, or people who go out of their way to spoil the fun of other players, qualify as TFG in my book regardless of other factors.

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair.

Pentagrams are not the symbol behind something responsible for millions of deaths, and they are also an intrinsic part of the Pagan religion. As long as you don't feign pseudo-satanism, I think you'll be alright.

On the other hand, I've seen some white Space Marines with the Triangle of the KKK. Since it's a pretty covert symbol, nobody really understood the meaning behind it, until I pointed it out, basically creating an instant TFG. Even after he stopped bringing that particular army, nobody at my FLGS even wants to talk to him anymore. He's kind of taken up the mantle of 'That weird guy in the corner'.

Agreed. I've played with guys with really powerful lists that were a lot of fun to be around and I've played guys with really weak lists that were a complete drag to be around.

Power of your list really doesn't have anything to do with it.
