Fluff-wise, my heart will always be on the side of the Imperials. However, my own mixed imperial force is painted quite poorly (lots of inked guardsmen). So, I wanted to build up a new collection of miniatures that I could put a lot of love into. As I am a big fan of old-school rogue trader minis and paint schemes... I thought I'd paint my Boyz up in some slightly ridiculous outfits. I'll post a slew of new pics very shortly, but, I can't wait to get these first few pics up.
Thanks. Please let me know what you folks think.

Nicely painted, though I have to admit the color selection is not to my taste (too bright)

Yes, very bright orks, but in the spirit of the RT era I think it's fitting.
The amount of gray in the last image posted dulls the models somewhat, but not in a good way. I'd pick out some of the detail present on the parts painted gray to give the eye something to focus on.
Otherwise, the reds are go-fasta and I like the effect on your power weapons.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

Dis be good stuff, yah. I, how you say, like dis beef too much!
I think the color selection is fine.
Are the blue spots on the daggers, swords, and armor glows from an unseen object that are hitting the metal parts, or are they highlights?

They look different in a good way that is appreciated after all the more sombre ork armies( my very own included).

Regarding the blue splotches on their weaponry: I wanted to pick up a secondary color to contrast with the ocean of red jumpsuits that I've painted onto my goons. So, on the majority of my first set of 60 some odd miniatures, I put 'war paint' on their swords, axes, severed grot limbs, etc... to make each mob look a bit more interesting.
And GAVIN: after looking over the photos, I think that you are TOTALLY right regarding the grey armor. The very fist orks (ie. the squats above) were painted as a homage to my test-list's uncanny ability to stomp the life out of my friend's Spacewolves-- hence the grey. I've since changed the majority of the armor to tin-bits, boltgun metal and a wash of badab black... I'll see how it comes out in the next set of pics.
Thanks for the input

Wow, I really like your color scheme. Makes them look like they leaped out of a comic book.
The only thing I don't like are the blue choppas. It looks okay on Klaws, but not on normal CC weapons.

I have never been a fan of bright colors.
But you just got away with paintin' your whole army in bright colors.
In other words you have the first brightly colored army that I like.(apart from some eldar army's)

Hey thanks a million guys.
Ah, and regarding some earlier inquiries about the skin tones:
On the black reach boys, for example, it's really just a LOT of layering. I used Dark Angels Green, Goblin Green, and Snot green with- roughly- a watered down 1/1 mix between each step. The mix varies, of course. But, generally speaking, you'll really start seeing the skin come together once you've finished the mix of goblin green and snot green.
On more complex models, I sometimes include a 2/1 and 1/2 mix of dark angels and goblin green. Once you've finished that, you can decide whether you want the skin to look slightly more or less tan by highlighting with a mix of snot green (for tanned skin tones) or bleached bone (for pale tones [for example: see the boyz straddling the truck]).
Hope that helps. In the end, there is no sure-fire way of smashing out cool skin tones... it's just a process of trial and error. GOOD LUCK!!!

You're actually amazing, I hope to paint as well as you someday! Kudos on the scheme.
Also I've seen drybrushing used effectively when painting Ork skin and I'd like to know whether you think layering is better.

Those models really take me back. To be honest, I really like the brighter colors. Things can really get lost on the tabletop with so much of a dark colored Ork horder. Great to see the individualism and 1st/2nd edition feel being placed on new models.
Thanks for sharing. I've been chomping at the bit to be able to get back to my paints and update my own blog.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |
