I was writing fluff for my SM and IG army's and i got to a point where I felt like I needed to make sure it conformed with fluff.
Here's my question: will a chapter under threat of excommunication be subjigated to become members of the planets military instead of its governors because of acts of cowerdice during a crisis.(only protecting their own istalations during an invasion to the point of shooting civilians on sight knowing that they are just civilians.) so could it happen?

So instead of being an autonomous chapter, they would be more directly controlled by the administration? Or the ecclesiarchy?

Is it a penance thing, like the crusading chapters from Badab?

I think it depends on the situation. Space marine chapters are pretty autonomous, and infringing on that too much would be dangerous. On the other hand, there are plenty of examples of space marines trying to make up for failures, or space marines fearing the Inquisition labeling them traitors, etc.

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

Yea they would be controlled by the administration of the planitary government set up by the inquisitor after the invasion. The current chapter master serves on the cabinet as secretary of war (modern day equivilent secretary of defence). Also most of the first company were part of the chapter that staged a coup against the chapter master at the time who was behind the civilian killing policy, they see themselves as penitentents but some of the younger members do not believe in the whole "sins of the father" thing. Also the inquisitor who originaly threatened the chapter became by the peoples popular demand the first governor and his decendants are the current nobility of the planet, most of them are inquisitors or former inquisitor so if the chapter ever strays from their restricitons then they will be excommunicated.

I'm sure a Chapter treated in this fashion would quickly turn renegade....ala Soul Drinkers!

Remember, according to GW fluff, to be a Astartes is to be elevated beyond "normal" men.....not to mention, the situation you describe sounds like the Chapter had taken its first tentative steps towards considering itself "above" humanity....hence the need to protect its own installation instead of putting the civilian population first.

If I were you I would base the Chapter on the Soul Drinkers....who are renegade, but not renegade if you know what I mean.

Man down, Man down....

No they are not renegade, all they lost was their ability to govern the planet. The current chapter master is second in command of the planets military after the planatery governor. Also they have been this way for 400 years. They have not gone renegade because they see themselves as paying the price for their chapters cowerdice. They are not very restricted, but if they ever try to seize the government again they will be excommunicated.

Furry Muff! But I still say, a self respecting Chapter would never allow this to happen to them.

Better if they quit the planet and became fleet based, like the Black Templars or the Dark Angels! For a Space Marine Chapter to become effectively a PDF force?!? never.

Sounds like the start for a renegade chapter to me...I like it. They will only take this stain on thier honor for so long....

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

No space marine chapter is going to take orders from a non astartes. Read Flight of the eisenstein for some grounding on the matter.

Thank you for all the input. I think I'm going to rewrite the fluff for my SM because there is really no way for them not to be renigades with my current fluff.
I'm thinking that maybe have the SMs on the next planet in the system and the two planets work together because of mutual benifit.(i.e. inquisitor planet gives SM master crafted equipment and the SM back the inquisitors up ocasionaly.
Thank you for all your help everyone.
