Warrior of Chaos vets, help out a raw recruit...

The utility of warhounds is pretty clear to me, but how many units, and at what size is a good plan usually?

I am working on a Slannesh list with a large amount of cav. That is the plan anyway. I intend to run at least two groups of 5 hounds for screening, and the occasional opportunity in combat. Does anyone give them upgrades? What are some tips for fielding, and using Chaos Warhounds?

While I am hardly a vet. I went searching for the answer to your very question. However it is subjective. It depends on your force for how many to use. The very very popular answer is no upgrades. I agree after using a few units. They are a meat shield, they need to be as cheap as you can use them. Their job is to die, march block, flank if needed, bait and flee and screen your knights. That is quite a few jobs for a cheap unit. So my thoughts are take at least 1 or 2 per units of knights. You can really control your opponents movement with the dogs and marauder horseman. Ya just have to experiment. I like 2 to 3 units in 500pts. I don't know how that would scale up however.

Just my 2 cents...

Why give them upgrades.

If memory serves they are still 30pts for a min unit.

I used to take 4 units. 2 to deploy first to draw out my opponents deployments and those 2 units would spend the game cowering in the rear corners to get me 100 points each for table quarters. Still cheapest unit in the game for quadrant capturing.

Otherwise units of 5 for redirecting by bait and flee. This will be harder if you have a cav army as you will be the same speed as the rest of the army.

At the very least, they can soak up some missile fire that would otherwise be aimed at your cavalry.

I have nothing else to add on the Hounds issue but I've got to gove kudos for the subject title. A reference to the movie Snatch right?

Damn Pikeys....

Thanks for the tips. I figured that I had the right idea, but the table quarter element had not occurred to me, nice.

You got it!

The bits about what happens when the dogs catch the rabbit, and Bricktop's monologue about pig farms are fantastic!
