I'm working on a mob of Stormboyz right now, and I am reposing them to be mid-flight. It's actually looking pretty good, but I'm having a serious problem with my basing options.

I have a ton of the GW flying bases, with the clear plastic stands, but they're trash. Out of about 40 bases, there is not one stem that does not have an unsighly air bubble smack-dab in the middle of the stem, which totally ruins the illusion as far as I'm concerned.

I'm wondering if anyone has better alternatives for getting the miniatures airborn. I've got some clear styrene tubing that I could make my own flying stands out of, but it's a bit bendy and I want something that's stucturally resilient; flying bases do me no good if they're easily bent.

I use brass rod and paint it the same green as my bases. If you want something clear, most hobby shops carry clear acrylic rod.

I mentioned that I do have said acrylic rod material, but the stuff's a bit bendy and I was hoping to find something a tad stronger.

I used brass rod or other metal rods for all of my flying bases (crisis suits and drones). I kind of overdid it (lots of 1/32nd inch hole drilling into flying bases when i should have just replaced the bottoms with something of the same size) but it turned out well. Since they're stormboyz I assume they're supposed to be on 25 mm bases...this is even better.

In the end, brass rod or some kind of metal rod painted black or to match your base always seems to look better to me than the plastic flying bases.

here's an example of how the flying bases ended up using 1/32" metal rod for the drones, and 1/16" for the crisis suit.
