Well I just purchased the Assault on Black Reach boxed set as my introduction to 40K after years of fantasy play. One of the things I like about GW is the background and in-depth history of the races and factions.

So where is a good place to start for a newb, and not get overwhelmed with everything? I did also purchase the Space Ork Codex, so I that is a good resource, but I don’t want to buy all of the codexes (at least not right away).

What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.

Excellent. Welcome to the Rabbit Hole.

There are several sources that you can go to for your research. For starters, the Warhammer 40,000 sourcebook is good as a primer to get the current adaptation of the 40k universe and where and how it currently sits.

Historically, I start reading the Horus Heresy series as they have great details on how it all happened.

For a quick fix, you can check out the following sites:

Warhammer 40k Wiki: http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

The Lexicanum: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

In your base, ignoring your logic.

Personally, dakkadakka is the only website you should consult for your 40k needs.

Not really, but GW has a FAQ set up on their site also so that would help should you develope any mind twistingly difficult questions.

Also, Gaunt's Ghosts are pretty good if you want to follow him. But the rulebook has the most fluff and story in it along with the codexes that give you more story for the army you want.

Welcome in 40k world.

When starting it's alot off info allround.
Fluff wise it's great to start reading books an Novels.
When you play more and join a club or create one with your friends.
You can lend Codex from each other and read the fluff that way aswell.
Reading fluff from the net can create controversial's.
Because some website/forums, post there own opinion and fluff.
Don't think that's a big problem for me, i like idea's and opinions from other people.
Keeps the Game expanding.

So read books, codex, White dwarf article's, forums, websites, weblogs and every thing you can find.
And most of all, use them as a guidline for your idea's and imagiantion.

Great choose on army.
ORKS are great fun.

Definitely check out the lexicanum, I find myself looking up info on there almost as much as I'm on dakka. As far as the novels go, I started out with the original Space Wolf omnibus, and that really gave me a good start.

If you want a 40k book to read I recommend the eisenhorn and ravenor trilogies. They give you a pretty good idea of the atmosphere of 40k in general.

Welcome Mouse.
Dakkadakka is a good sight for 40k info, also since your playing Orkz you may find The Waaagh interesting as well,it's a site dedicated to Orkz..lots of good stuff.
As for reading material,I agree with ph34r,the eisenhorn & Ravenor books were very good,as are most of Abbets works.

Thanks guys, it is wide realm out there when you are trying not to get overwhelmed with 40K fluff.

I've been happily painting nobz, and a friend is now painting the SM from AoBR as a Blood Angels army. I liked the Death Company rules and thought that would be fun (got to admit though, I am wondering if I should have went with Space Wolves). I have been doing a lot of reading, rules, codexes, some net stuff (all the while I have been playing WHFB games with my LM army).

The grim darkness of the far future

You should head down to the GW's online website and check out all of the different armies models and fluff, that way you can get a bit more educated of a decision to which army you want to play as. Seeing as how Black reach comes with a great start to space marine and Ork armies it would probably be best to go with one of them. Not only are they both cool armies but they have the newest codex's (rulebook) that you can get.

Yea, the rulebook is really nice and compact. I however use the big bulky one ^_^
