That is the question!

On the plus side: Steed of Shadows makes the movement twenty inches with the fly and allows the user to leave a close combat as well as move over obstacles.

On the down side: Being a bound spell means that it can be dispelled making you loose a turn of movement.

Are the points best spent elsewhere or does the item still have a place in a Lizardmen army?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse

Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General

Well the Hero doesn't just move 20, you're forgetting that he has an ordinary movement phase. Assuming it's a Scar-Veteran on his own, he can march 8 and fly 20.

But in terms of the topic, I think that the previous version is much better. You don't have to rely on magic (which is always unpredictable) and you can move a decent distance.

On the note of obstacles, single characters move like skirmishers, and therefore don't take penalties for crossing obstacles or for moving over difficult or very difficult terrain. They can also march through it.

Do you really even have to ask?

It was near-mandatory as a choice last time and gave a super-flexible & powerful character.

Now it's a near-useless item that will rarely be taken and removes most utility from Saurus Hero's.

In all honesty I think its about the same. Its one of those ACE in the hole items if you are playing a magic heavy list durring a closed list game. It has its advantages and some disadvantages but what it does do is allow the model to move twice and can potentialy leap over untis to tie up some big nasty for a turn or two.

I think it's a little worse.

It's only really useful in a magic heavy army. You use your Slann + engine priest to suck out enemy dispel dice, then bam! send the Scar vet in. Enemy will need 2 dispel dice to stop reliably, or a scroll.

Otherwise, it's hard to use since skink priests without a Slann aren't a real magical threat.

Hey, EotG makes them darn near as good as Slann at magic. Basicaly a Lv3 wizard (because if you are to cheap to get a Lv 2 upgrade you should not get the Engine), and the Ability to drop the cast value in a Lore by 1. Who says they aren't a threat?

Q: What do you call a Dinosaur Handpuppet?

A: A Maniraptor

Me.

Big reason why - the Lore of Heavens is mediocre at best. And you only get two spells from it (three at most.) Oh noes! Not the Portent of Far!

Slaan can choose from any lore, can know all the spells, and rolls way more dice with the focus discipline. Facing off against Nurgle? Fire or Shadow. Lots of Terrain? Life. Brets of Chaos? Metal. Undead? Light or Fire.

Granted, the Ancient Stegadon is nice for it's hitting power and Terror. And Burning alignment is nice too. However, both require the Skink Priest to expose himself to combat, and even with his armour a determined attack will kill him.

EoTG are nice for support, but a Slaan they are not.

I think it's a little worse, I always took a Scar-Vet with one and a great weapon to squish my mates chariots.

Now it's too easy to dispel except after a few turns when you've pulled some scrolls off your opponent, by which time the chariots have charged anyways.

it still has an application though, using it at the end of a magic phase after most/all of the enemy's DD have been used would allow for at least some chance of it going off with out a hitch.

Well, with a little luck, and the opponent setting his Artillery up on a hill, you can pound out his Dispel Dice, and then send MR Saurus flying across the board straight into his Artillery making a nice big dent in your opponents plans, quite possibly on turn one.

Also quite a tasty way of hindering Fast Cavalry in a similar way!

Yeah, but it depends on your opponent not using a scroll.
But at least they're a scroll down then I guess, I'd still rather be squashing a chariot before it charges than take a scroll down.

I took one in the last game I played and it didn't come off well, it got scrolled then I tried to flee from the chariots charge but rolled waaay too low and got squished. That was my bad tactics though should of waited a bit before hanging my Scar-Vet out there.

I'll be taking it again in my next game to get the hang of it again though.
