What kind of health care does the 'average' Imperial citizen have?

Do the hive workers take daily doses of antibiotics and chemical binders to prevent rampant diseases?
What kind of acute care is available?
How well provided is it? (remember a sick/dead labor is a poor/no laborer)
What kind of life expectancy do they have? (sans age reduction treatments)

Yeah, there are many different worlds, with different cultures and technology levels. Many human characters in the fluff live for centuries, though, for what that's worth. Clearly medical science has advanced over the millennia.

Thats only for Very Important People (like Yarrick) and Tech priests. Its all done via Bionics anyway.

Waaaaaaagh

Not true....cybernectics and Bionics are one way of prolonging human life. There is also biological / chemical methods....in fact there is a course of chemicals or drugs called juvanents (spelling?)

This type of enhamcement is generally only offered to the Imperial Elite, or very useful warriors etc.

I think the common herd, are allowed to live or die by their own devices, with low level hive dwellers being used as factory fodder and nothing more.

The thing to bear in mind, and I hate GW for designing they're system this way, is that Human life is worth nothing in WH40K, for all intents and purposes humanity is a plague on the Universe, with an importance level somewhere between a Grot and an earthworm.

Man down, Man down....

when i look at the the rulebook art. it looks like everyone has bionics so i guess they live pretty long depending they dont have a loose bolt on.

And yes delephont, like in the rule book saying, forgot which edition, "To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are those times."

It's like Communist Russia. The propaganda says you're all the same. The reality is that if you're one of the VIPs, you're treated well. If you're not, you are condemned to a hard life.

Health care depends on your caste, position, and planet that you live on. For example, if you're a Spirer from Necromunda then you can expect to get your sniffles taken care of promptly by the best physician on the planet. If you are typical hive trash, you wait in a grimey free-hospital for days.

Read the "Ravenor" series, they show a slice of health-care in the Imperium.

Thanks Zahaladeen, I'll take a look at that series.

---
What about custom organs?
ie. organic enhancements to the lymphatic system
Would these be acceptable for the upper class?
Would they be black market?

I've seen some references to gland warriors and other enhanced humans, but not much in the way of organics.
Would this type of modification be seen as tainting a 'pure' form?

Depends on whom you ask. The Mechanicum Biologis uses organ implants as well as mechanical - though much more former and not the latter - as do Space Marines. Guard use enhancements in certain regiments, but this depends on the regiment, the peoples that compose it, et cetera.

As far as mere mortals are concerned, upper-class citizens of the Imperium would have access to this kind of biological tech, though this is not as advanced as their mechanical counterparts. They can get the work done, but at a cost - which essentially negates the lesser forms of humanity that make up your typical Imperium world.

Having said that, depending on the "part" I could see this becoming an Inquisitorial issue - again, depending on planet and it's relative distance to Terra or proximity to a Shrine World. I imagine the more zealous humans would look at such a thing as impure and depending on the graft or enhancement - a mutation. However, if you live in a upper spire or are a noble, then these things tend to go unnoticed by most until the Inquisition investigates. Depending on what the implant is, who knows what they would do? Emperor knows that Inquisitorial agents are augmented, but then again they have special license to be.

Check out the "Ravenor" series - I know I already said that - but in the beginning of Ravenor Rogue (I think) there is a brief fight between a bounty hunter and a mark who is running around with organs from others. Since this was out on the fringe, no one really gave a toss other than trying to reclaim the expensive wetware.

I hope I answered your questions.

The grim darkness of the far future

The healthcare probably depends mostly on their planet
In necromunda most gangs are able to afford bionics for 90 or so credits which is about the same price as 4 lasguns, so a fairly wealthy citizen could afford one easily and lower class populace probably couldn't afford that, So most people in hive worlds could easily afford to keep themselves with good healthcare but since there probably wouldn't be a healthcare system those who make little money would pretty much be screwed.

Yes, the ravenor books give an insight. If your wealthy/important you tend to have very good acess. For normal citizens they make do with what's available 9understaffed hospitals). Those with a criminal record loose the right to healthcare if i remember the book right. Ex medics sometimes take up private surgarys to earn a living to care for those who can't get hospital treatment but it's basically cleaning wounds, taking teeth out, amputations, no anasthetic type affairs. Medical supplies are stricktly controlled and are unavaiable unless you have a liecense and even then can only be used with the proper 'paperwork'

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I think it comes down to this.
Civilian=None
Imperial Guard=Duck tape for lost limbs and painkillers.Bionics if you're special.
Imperial Navy=Spacesickness pills, bionics and drugs to keep the officers youthful.
Space Marines=Any treatment known to man, including stem cells. I mean Ive read that they don't even purge SM.

I couldn't have described the US health care system more concisely if I'd tried.

Whatever healthcare the citizens of the Imperium get, it can only be better than America's.

It would be Canada's not Americas...

In Canada dietrich's original point may be observed on occasion, whereas in the US it is absolute. So, what makes you a VIP in the US? I know...

Your life is the Emperor's currency. Spend it well.

First a rant.
America has healthcare?
But seriously, its better than Canada's(it may be free but you're like a customer at McDonalds, in and out in under 10 minutes).
Healthcare in US and Canada is like Xbox Live and PSN...
Xbox Live is better but you pay more for it, PSN is Free but not as good as Xbox live.
Besides you can get good healthcare for free if you're an illegal immigrant, trust me.

Its probably a socialist healthcare though, free, but you only get it if it benefits the Imperium(ie; natal care for people born on fortress worlds).

Well I think it is like this,"doctor commisar please help me I have an ouchie""Damn you lily livered guardsmen"."Sir im missin an arm.'"I have the best treatment for that,a lasgun shot to the head."

LOL,but on the serious side in the dark future there are no bandages.Ok now I am really gina help out,in the imperial guard book Fifteen hours it speak of Arvin larn being shot in the stomach and then appling gause to it and giving him self some morphine(Not sure about the last bit),so I guess guardsmen must get some sort of basic medical training for on the fied repairs.

I just started the "Ravenor" series as per Zahaladeen's suggestion.
It's good so far (the cheesecake is a bit hard to get through, though)
,the mix of high and low tech is pretty much exactly what I was looking for
the examples of faith papers to "prevent" cancer in the same community as individuals if bio-augmented muscles and implants to keep the rain off is the sort of contrasts that I was envisioning for an 'average' Imperial community

I've read 15 hours as well, and I can say that Imperial health care is better than ork health care. But mad doks can beat the c**p out of medics and guys who believe in superstition.
