My Gw order arrived today, so I got stuck in to the fantastic new plastic dragon model.

This is being worked on for auction on Ebay, so I really wanted to make it stand out. My previous dragons have just been to a bit higher than table top quality, they were done for friends, or for when I needed one myself in a rush, but this guy is going to be to a much better standard, so I had to try and think of a way of making him stand out.
I started off with midnight blue, and did a 2 drybrush layer to 1 layer of ink pattern to bring his highlights up to hawk turquoise, which is not shown very well im the crummy photo I took, but hes a lovely glowing blue green.

I then originally decided to give him white scales, but completely shot myself in the foot by thinking " Hey, if I paint over all the scale area with fortress grey, then blue/black ink the recesses, it will look great!!11@" But no, no it did not. So I had to scrap that, then repaint the entire scale area and start from scratch. I was thinking of all the colours I could use on the scales that would tie in with the colour scheme I was going to go with, but couldn't decide. Then I realised, man, why don't I just do them all.



This did mean painting each individual scale one at a time, which was a nightmare ( as opposed to the usual drybrushing) but the overall look is great I think. The whites are going to be brought up to stark white, then varnished, and the blue and reds are going to be given the gem treatment. So dark >light with an ink wash, then varnish and a highlight. It has so far been very time consuming, but I am happy with it atm.

I will update as I go along tomorow, but I need to sleep now before my eyes fall out.

Scales are really, really glittery, I need to sort out how to shoot it so you can see them properly, blacklined all the armor and fins/wings, and have started laying down the base layer for all his membranes. Being based icy blue, then eventually blended up to white.

Managed to repair the back leg as best I can, still needs a new ink and the scales to be re highlighted, but it should be fine.

Fins are finished. About 10 overlapping layers of very watery paint starting as icy blue, and moving to skull white. They are very very smooth and satiny looking, the pic doesnt do them justice. Starting on the wing membranes now, getting the same treatment as the fins, except with ink washes in between.

Looking nice! The blue looks very rich, though I'm not too sure of the scales. Still, I'll wait till I see the final result; if they all look like gems, it would be pretty striking. Which rider will be added?

Going to paint up both riders so theres a choice, really loving the fact that they are plastic, means interchanging them is not a huge issue when it comes to chipping paint.

If you use it as a star dragon, it has pretty much the best dragon stats available, so yes, it kills mucho grande!

Bollox. Completley ruined the entirety of one of its back legs with a massive streak of white while working on the fins.

I cannot believe I did not notice straight away so I could wash it off. Need to backstep now and redo the hind leg while trying to not make it obvious that it was redone :(

Starting to work on the armor now, going to dirty up the joints slightly, dont want the whole model to look too pristine, details will be in a rough an aged bronzy gold.





I also love how my desk is getting progressively messier.

Finally starting to look near finished now.

Horns and claws need a wash and a few more highlights, then just gems and leather to go. Then the rider of course!

I made the armor a lot muckier originally, but it looked terrible against the rest of the model.

Ended up just trying to leave a little bit of darkness in between the overlaps, Ill try to get an actual decent pic of it today that isint a half blurry crappy one.

Quite impressive. Meaning the kit and the paintjob. Well done so far Ifalna

OK, base is done bar some static grass, and dragon was attached with no nasty incidents


Leather straps and gems to go on the dragon, then hes all done and I can start on the rider + reins

Its just such a lovely colour to paint, always blends and layers so well. That and it suits high elves lurvly.

i guess so, but the same colour does get annoying after too long.


getting pissed off with the sight of green!
play orks and salamanders, and just started sculpting stuff again (with GS)
and the missus now wants the garden done, so yea, everythings green for me -_-

Get some coloured contact lenses and see red for a while, nice change of pace!

Iv'e just started putting the dragon mage together now, but he does seem to have a really, really bandy arm. Only way I can describe it is he is holding the sword as if it is weightless. I'm really not happy with it, but Im sure I attached it right.

edit: bleh, its banjaxed, replaced it with a staff arm.
