Subject: Chaos Daemon - 1500 - Highly Competitive

I'm looking to start branching into Chaos Daemons, but don't really know where to start. So far, I haven't purchased any models, so anything is within reach. The games at my local GW tend to become very, very competitive. I'm hoping to purchase a few models today to start this army! If you play Daemons competitively, please don't hesitate to give me a shove in the right direction, or, if you have the time, throw in a 1500pt list that you would recommend.
I'm thinking about going with a pure Nurgle army. So far, this is what I've got for a nurgle oriented army:
Ku'Gath, The Plaguefather [ 300 ]
Epidemius [ 110 ]
3 x Daemon Prince, Mark of Nurgle, Cloud of Flies, Noxious Touch, Iron Hide, Daemonic Flight [ 645 ]
8 x Plaguebearers, Icon [ 145 ]
8 x Plaguebearers, Icon [ 145 ]
9 x Nurglings [ 117 ]
Total: 1462
Thanks in advance!

I sort of play daemons (as much as any slightly old school CSM player inadvertantly does), and the most competitive lists I've seen along these lines do not include Ku'gath for points purposes (take a GUO instead), and would take two soul grinders since Princes get so pricey, then a lot more 'bearers. You want your tally to count, and the more plagueswords and the like you have out there, the better.

Kurgath is too expensive; take a standard GUO instead, and add some more nurglings or PB. (or some flamers, but you're breaking the "all nurgle"). quite classical Epi list. edit after cannerus: you need the DP to get the tally up. keep them.

2 many DP for 1500 points.
You will have trouble with armor as the Dps will take target priority and go down rather quickly. The tally goes up quickly with 1 GUO and PBs (what I use) People seem obsessed with the 2nd turn tally hike when all you really need is one good mid to late game turn with the tally up and you win.
Credibility: I have fine tuned what I have running now my record is 28 6 2. DPs are not needed and they are a point sink.
12 wounds w/ a 3+ save only takes 36 wounds to kill.

I think you're spending way too many points on the DPs and Ku'gath. those 4 models are 2/3rds of your army. the DPs are 40% alone.
What does Epidemius do for them? Whats the point of the tally if it's not helping most of your army? Only one of the 4 steps on the tally help the daemon princes.
I think you would be served by having more plaguebearers, and relying on the GUO and one or two DPs to move the tally. Things like breath of chaos from DPs or a Herald when dropping off an icon can move the tally up, as can the GUO. You don't need 15 kills by the end of turn 2 to make the tally worthwhile when you have 40+ plaguebearers.

So if you aren't running DP's what are you using to beat mechanized armies?
I agree that he has spend a bit too much points on units which rise the tally and a bit too few on units which benefit from the tally, but you can't just leave DP's out of an Epidemius list. If you do that, your only anti-tank capacity will be ONE! GUO. I'd try to either drop Ku'Gath down to a GUO, or drop one of the DP's. With these points, you can get another PB (or Nurglings) squad.

Again the list I run is: 1850 Epi GUO 3 x 19 PB mark 3 x 6 Nurglings 2 SG w/ P n T for 1500 I would prolly drop 1 nurgling squad and tone down the PB squads.

I think ten Plagubearers each squad would be better. One of them should be with Epidemius for protection.
I'd also get rid of the Soul Ginders for the Daemon Princes w Mark of Nurgle and Breath of Chaos. Soul Grinders don't exactly add up to the tally right?
If you have to include Soul Grinders, remove the tongue upgrade. It's not as needed. Maybe add in Icons instead?

The way you have this set up, you might be better off not running an epidemius list at all, but instead maxing out on MCs. What f you took a GUO instead of epedimius and then dropped the nurglings? You could break up the plague bearers into 3 smaller squads and now you have a 5 MC army that is very tough at 1500. Just a thought.

kugath is cool but not worth it in points. Perhaps get a GUO and use the rest of the points for a soulgrinder?
